1 REFLECTIONS FROM PREACHER JOHN Why do we go to church every Sunday? THE MESSENGER Steele Memorial United Methodist Church 733 Shaw Street, P.O. Box 346, Barboursville, WV (304) Rev. Dr. John R. Sauvage, Senior Pastor Rev. Ralph G. Sager, Associate Pastor Website: August 2014 TEXT: Let us not neglect the assembling of ourselves together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another, especially now that the day of Jesus coming back again is drawing near. (Hebrews 10:25) I remember two Children s Sermons that have stayed with me for some time now. One is about a walkie-talkie and the other is about a flashlight. A Sunday school teacher was talking into a walkie-talkie and the preacher was listening on another walkie-talkie. They talked to each other for a bit and then the teacher asked her class, Now, what makes this work? We all agreed that it was a little battery inside. She took the battery out of its case and said, Without the power of this little battery nothing would happen. Then she took another battery out of her pocket and put it in the walkietalkie. The sound was very weak and you could not make out what was being said. She said, Now what s the problem. I used it last week. What s the problem now? We all agreed that the battery was weak and almost dead. She said, So it needs to be replaced or recharged so that it will work. And if it simply gives of its power without recharging, it will soon be no good. Then she held the two batteries up for all to see and said, This is why we come to church. We come to church to receive new power for living. It is like getting our spiritual battery recharged so that we can take what we receive here and go out and share it with others. Here we remember that God loves us and therefore, we can go out and love others. Here we learn about forgiveness so that we can go out and forgive others. Here we learn about all the good things God has done for us so we can go out and do good things for others. We receive so that we can give. (Note: This concept of needing to be recharged has also been used with a flashlight.) I have always been in church. It was as much of my life as it was being called to dinner. No one questioned if we were going to church. We prepared ourselves on Saturday for Sunday morning. I m sure my mother wondered if I ever learned anything in Sunday school and church. Now as I have had time to look back on my life, a lot of God s word and spirit was placed in my life and I didn t even realize it at the time. God has a wonderful way of forming our lives if we can just be regular in Sunday school and church. By being present before God and those who also are there with us, God s spirit begins to live out his life in us. And many times we are not even aware that God is putting his ways inside us. What better thing would you want for your family? See you in church on Sunday!

NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS AT STEELE for high school graduates and those in their 20 s and early 30 s is meeting upstairs at 9:45 AM. If you are in this age group and are looking for a place to belong, please join us each Sunday morning for this time of sharing. Invite your friends to join you. We hope to see you Sunday. WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE? We learn early in the Old Testament that teaching and learning are extremely important. Let me take a moment to thank those who serve in any capacity to support the formation of Christian faith and discipleship in those who walk through the doors of Steele Memorial. The Christian Education Committee wants to do its part in helping our teachers and leaders plan and implement experiences that help children, youth, and adults come to know God! If you feel that God has been calling you to volunteer in any area of education within the church, please let me know. It may be nursery, Sunday school, children/youth/adult ministry, or other small group activities. As stated in our Church Purpose...Christian Education is about information, formation, and transformation. YOUR church has a place for you! Please see me or Preacher John if you feel that God is calling you to take an active role in helping to implement some amazing and positive experiences for God's flock! Ms. Becky, Chairperson of Christian Education BCCL: I just wanted to thank all my ice cream makers who made ice cream for the Social. I want to thank the BCCL and everyone else who helped in any way. We made $850 for the building fund. Reba Swann's brother Ronald Morrison was our auctioneer and he did a fabulous job. And I want you to be sure and mark your calendars for Oct 5 th. That evening at 5:00 PM we will be having another covered dish picnic at the Barboursville park down by the lake. Yum yum. Looking forward to a big turnout to both events. Bye for now. Sue Hello from the YOUTH OF STEELE MEMORIAL. What a wonderful month June was! It was full of excitement, activities, and learning about our savior and how we can better serve him in our day to day lives. The highlight of our month was the youth s trip to Camp Crossings which was a weekend church camp in KY, where we were able to get away and really hear God speak. After the first 3 hours of being there, the kids were already asking if we were going back next year! The staff, and counselors really cared about the kids and it was evident that their

3 sole purpose for being there was to impact the kids and the counselors in a positive way and to emulate Christ with their lives. The pastor for the weekend was a man named Rob Turner who pastors a church called Apex Community Church in Dayton, OH. The cool thing about Rob is that he was my pastor when I attended Cedarville University while pursuing my Youth Ministry degree! He is an amazing man of God and such a dynamic speaker. The majority of the youth said that the worship time was their favorite part of the camp. Other activities included bazooka ball, 9 square, zip lining, tons of water activities including the BLOB which was a huge floating pillow that launches you 20+ feet in the air when another person jumps on the end! This was one of the favorite activities for the kids (I can t imagine why!) Most importantly, we had two decisions for Christ during the week. We had a young lady accept Christ as her personal Savior, and another young lady commit to follow God as he placed a desire in her heart for mission work. We were blessed to have this opportunity, and it couldn t have been made possible without the love and support of our church family! August is going to be a great month as well as we seek to learn more about our Lord each week. We will be having a cookout at the home of Greg and Gina Crews on August 3 rd. We want to invite all of the youth from 6 th -12 th grade as well as their parents and siblings for an awesome time of food, fun, and fellowship! It will be from 6:00- PM and food will be provided. Their home is in Ridgeview, the neighborhood on the left past the Barboursville Park. Drive all the way to the end and you re sure to see us! We have a cool surprise for the kids as well! Our hope as a group is to be an extension of the church to the community of young people in this area. We want our lives to reflect Christ, and for our desire to be constantly seeking him. In Christ, Nate Davenport Youth Director MANY THANKS to Claren and Jack Perkins for presenting a gift to me from Steele Memorial that they brought back from the Annual Conference. It was a beautiful statue of Jesus speaking to an unknown man. I appreciate the gift very much and will honor the spirit in which it was given to me. ~Ralph Sager INFORMATION ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICES CABELL COUNTY COMMUNITY SERVICES ORGANIZATION, INC.
