OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD: The Singles Class, United Methodist Women, and Missions Committee are participating in a CHALLENGE to Our Church to fill 100 Christmas shoe boxes for OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD between our "kick-off," Sunday, October 18, through the Collection Sunday, November 15. Our church packed 53 boxes last year, so our CHALLENGE is fill a box individually, as a Sunday School Class, or with your children or grandchildren. Take one or two of the plastic boxes provided by the U.M. Women and fill the box with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies for a child 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14; and return these for the Blessing of the Shoeboxes on Collection Sunday, November 15. (Plastic shoeboxes will be available in the narthex beginning Sunday, October 18 with a pamphlet describing appropriate packing ideas.)

2 This mission challenge is in addition to our ongoing local support of the Greater Barboursville Community Outreach, ECCHO (food pantry, food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Angel Tree gifts), and district or conference mission support. So this CHALLENGE is in your court; let's meet this challenge together in Jesus name! Background to Operation Christmas Child: SAMARITAN'S PURSE is a non-denominational, evangelical Christian organization founded by Franklin Graham to provide spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan's Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God's love and changing lives in Jesus name. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD is an "offshoot" of that ministry; and is the world's largest Christmas project, bringing joy and hope to needy children around the world through giftfilled shoeboxes and the Good News of God's love. Since 1993, more than 100 million shoebox gifts have been delivered to children in more than 130 countries around the world. CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM - The Cherub Choir, under the direction of Miss Katie Damron, will present "Where's Baby Jesus?" on Sunday, December 6, during the 11:00 service. The children will remind us that Baby Jesus should be the focus of Christmas! Plus, these cherubs are cute as buttons! The Celebration Choir, under the direction of Ms. Becky, will present "The Best Christmas Present Ever!" on Sunday, December 13, in the gym at 6:30. This musical reminds us to answer Christ as HE knocks on the door of our hearts. Receive the best Christmas present ever, God's love! THE BEES will be very busy in November. We will begin our change collection for The Angel Tree as our mission project & celebrate Thanksgiving with a small feast. Our Bible story is Daniel in the Lion's Den. Our Bible verse is 1 Chronicles 16:34 "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!" Happy Thanksgiving and BEE Thankful! AEROBICS CLASS: The Church is offering an aerobics class three days a week. The classes will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Stephanie Ross is the director. Members and friends of the Church are invited to attend, Ladies Only. Cost for the class is $5 per week. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: No use for Dad s tools? The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, located at 240 Third Ave. in Huntington, accepts used tools and finds where they can be put to the best use. Your donation helps build homes and transform our community. You can arrange for free pick-up service. You may find something you re looking for at the ReStore. They carry appliances, furniture, paint, building materials, flooring, cabinets, counter tops, tile, doors, lighting, windows, and more! 3 THANKSGIVING CELEBRATIONS FOR THE HOME by MaryJane Pierce Norton As a family, make a blessing box. Ask different family members to write on slips of paper things for which they are thankful. Use the box as a centerpiece on Thanksgiving Day. Pass around the box, pull out the slips of paper, and read the blessings. Plan for some time during the holiday to be a time of rest. Set aside a minimum of one hour for your family to take a walk together, to sit together and listen to soothing music, or to sit in silence for awhile then talk together. Reflect on the past year. Ask each family member to talk about one thing that happened to him or her during the past year for which he or she is thankful. Take a family photograph. Label it "Thanksgiving 2015" and list on the back the names of family members and one thing each person is thankful for this year. Pray for those who have lost family members during the last year. Light a candle of remembrance and call out the names of those in the family who are no longer physically present. Use the following as a litany of thanks prior to your Thanksgiving meal: Reader: Today is Thanksgiving Day. We are grateful to be together at this time of the year. Reader: Hear these words from the Bible: "The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for He has founded it on the seas and established it on the waters." (Psalm 24:1-2, NRSV) Reader: As we light the candles on this table, let them be a reminder to us of God's presence with us. Reader: Let us pray, O God for all the blessings we enjoy, we give you thanks. Help us look at the world around us in such a way that we see Your hand in creation and in those we meet. Help us be a blessing today to those gathered around this table and in all our days to those we meet at home, at school, in church, and in our community. CELEBRATE RECOVERY A community meeting to get acquainted with the Celebrate Recovery, a support network for those who are seeking freedom from substance abuse, will be held at Steele Memorial UMC on Thursday, November 19, 7 PM. Karen Reese, our regional director in West Virginia, will be present to answer questions as well. Those who are interested in the spiritual care of those who have been trapped in addictions are encouraged to attend. Contact Pastor Kevin if you have any questions. What does depression look like? Mental health professionals use the term dysthymia (dis- THIGH-me-ah) to refer to a low-level drone of depression that lasts for at least two years in adults or one year in children and teens. While not as crippling as major depression, its persistent hold can keep you from feeling good and can intrude upon your work, school, and social life. If you were to equate depression with the color black, dysthymia might be likened to a dim gray. Unlike major depression, in which relatively short episodes may be separated by considerable spans of time, dysthymia lasts for an average of at least five years. If you suffer from dysthymia, more often than not you feel depressed during most of the day. You may carry out daily responsibilities, but much of the zest is gone from your life. Your depressed mood doesn t lift for more than two months at a time, and you also have at least two of the following symptoms: overeating or loss of appetite insomnia or sleeping too much tiredness or lack of energy low self-esteem trouble concentrating or making decisions hopelessness. Sometimes an episode of major depression occurs on top of dysthymia; this is known as double depression. Dysthymia often begins in childhood, the teen years, or early adulthood. Being drawn into this low-level depression appears to make major depression more likely. In fact, up to 75% of people who are diagnosed with dysthymia will have an episode of major depression within five years. It s difficult to escape the grasp of untreated dysthymia. Only about 10% of people spontaneously emerge from it in a given year. Some appear to get beyond it for as long as two months, only to spiral downward again. However, proper treatment eases dysthymia and other depressive disorders in about four out of five people. 1 More is understood about depression than ever before. We are encouraged that people can now find positive therapy that will ease the symptoms of such mood disorders through professional health care workers.
