2 Reading Psalms Fifty years ago this month I decided I would read the Psalms every day. It was one of the better decisions I have made and I continue, to this day. This morning I read Psalms 65 & 66. Now, have I read the Psalms every day for the past 600 months, 2600 weeks, the past 18,250 days? No! Why not? As a Pastor I occasionally got an early morning emergency call, maybe I was sick, and sometimes plain human cussedness took over. So I have started over more times than I can count. God always welcomes me back. Lest I ever get a sense of pride for my reading all these years I recall a book I have in my library, PRAYING THE PSALMS by Stanley L. Jaki. Jaki is a Catholic scholar who has recited all 150 Psalms once every week for the past 60 years. Billy Graham read through the Psalms every month for many years. After all these years I am amazed that just reading them through, 1-150, they come alive and sometimes I say, I never read that Psalm before. I might reread that Psalm for several days. I have no goal of completing a certain number each year. The Psalms can be divided into two general categories, Lament and Praise. The Lament Psalms are complaints, cries of despair, prayers of bitterness. Yes, God hears these prayers that ask Why? or How Long? (Psalm 13). The best known Lament is Psalm 88 that ends with, darkness is my closest friend. Praise and gratitude are also found in many Psalms scattered from beginning to end. Psalm 103 is a favorite of many. We thank God for what He has done. We praise God for who He is. To read and mediate on one of these Psalms is a wonderful spiritual experience. The big question: Which of the two, Lament or Praise, is found most often? Lament! Psalms of Lament help me be honest with myself and with God that almost always leads to thanks and praise.
