deeper G O I N G The campus renovations are difficult to endure right now. As the work on the Fellowship Hall has begun the noise levels in our offices are a challenge. But we know that noise is leading to something good; we know the challenges will be leading to something good. We often forget that the hard work has to be done and endured in order to have the good results we desire. Faith is like that too. If you want to have a long-lasting relationship with God in Jesus Christ, you have to put in the work. You have to endure the challenge. And you might have to put up with some noise. But we do so, knowing that staying in the journey will lead us into the heart of God. Going through the ups and downs of any relationship may be difficult and discouraging, but they lead us into a deeper sense of commitment and closeness. When the renovations are complete on the campus, we will have worship spaces that will enhance our experiences of gathering together to worship God, to explore that relationship with Jesus Christ, together. So the challenges and noise of renovations are totally, and eternally, worth it. Stay in the Journey! Pastor Steve Melde

Sunday morning Worship Schedule 8:30 a.m. Worship with Contemporary Band (Usually meeting in the Fellowship Hall, this month this service will be held in the Sanctuary, while the Fellowship Hall is undergoing renovations) 9:30 a.m. Sunday Funday School for all Ages 10:45 a.m. Worship with the Choirs and Organist The room is round so that all worshipers have a sense of sitting at the communion table. Children in Worship? Yes. CPC welcomes children of all ages in worship. We have blue bags in the corners of the room filled with activity supplies if caretakers wish for their kids. We do have ongoing nursery care for those who choose for their infants/toddlers to take advantage of professional caretakers. Attire: CPC tends to be a bit casual in dress. You will see folks in shirts/ties/coats, in dresses with heels. You will also see folks in shorts and shirts. We believe all are welcome and should feel comfortable in worship. Communion: The first Sunday of the month we invite all worshipers to partake of the sacrament of communion. We use bread that is gluten/soy/dairy/nut free, and we use grape juice. We do so with the hope that all will be able to fully participate. 9-11: We will be honoring the 15 year anniversary of this tragic event in both services on Sunday, September 11th. Please join us in prayers for peace. 3

Meditation: A Spiritual Practice Meditation is a spiritual exercise that people of faith have engaged in for thousands of years. In the book of Genesis, we read that Isaac went into the field to meditate (Genesis 24:63 NIV) and God told Joshua to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night (Joshua 1:8). There are many examples of meditation in the Psalms. Here are three, can you find others? Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, Psalm 19:14; I will meditate on all Your work And muse on Your deeds. Psalm 77:12; Let my meditation be pleasing to Him; As for me, I shall be glad in the LORD. Psalm 104:34. Some scholars believe that it was through meditation that the prophets heard the Word of God to which they then prophesied. And the Apostle Paul teaches us to meditate: Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8 Early Christians practiced different forms of meditation for centuries and it has carried on through generations, though it seems, on a limited basis. But for many, it is an excellent way to relate to Almighty God; to praise and worship God in spirit and to open oneself to the presence of the Holy Spirit while spending time in quiet meditation and contemplation. It is through meditation and contemplation that they hear the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit.

1st Saturday Night Worship at CPC It is the purpose of the 1 st Saturday Evening Worship Services, conducted on the first Saturday of each month, to listen for God s still small voice through a time of quiet prayer and meditation. We begin each service by entering the service quietly so that we can immediately prepare ourselves for a service of contemplation. After singing some hymns of praise, we pray together, worshiping God and asking God to speak to each of our hearts. We read a passage of scripture which then moves the congregation into a time of personal and intentional meditation on God and God s presence with us. We also celebrate the Lord s Supper, remembering on how deeply God s love for us is; so much so that God would sacrifice himself for each of us. We close the service with prayer and a closing hymn. As we continue this form of worship each month, we will explore new ways to engage in the spiritual exercise of meditation. Please join us on the first Saturday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Round Sanctuary as we explore this wonderful form of worship! 5

Our 2016 Annual Stewardship Theme, From Many Raindrops a River Flows, continues to guide in the use of the generous monies that CPC folks are sharing with our congregation. We have recently supported the mission and ministry of CPC by: Providing story Bibles and prayer shawls to our 1 st Graders Providing Study Bibles to our 6 th graders Fixing the flooring in the Fellowship Hall Kitchen so people don t trip Cleaning up the alleyways so the neighbors still like us Running the A/C in the offices to keep our staff cool in the heat Providing the bags needed for the Casa Maria Lunches every 4 th Tuesday Giving 22 children at Kellond Elementary School bags of weekend food Buying cookies for Sunday fellowship As you can see from things grand and glorious to things routine and ordinary, it takes a village to be a village. The monies you share with CPC truly do help to create Christian community in many ways. They support activities on our campus as well as ministries within the Tucson community and throughout the world. Thank you for your ongoing support of CPC s 2016 budget and the mission and ministries that budget supports.

Gone Fishing In Scripture Mark 1:17 Jesus urges us to Come follow me! And I will make you fishermen for the souls of men and women. However, we often wonder how we can answer this call? Thanks to everyone who is supporting our H 2 O Capital Campaign, we have found new ways to cast our nets! Your pledges have made possible a new lighted sign in front of our church; a beautiful new copper roof; and an outstanding refurbished cupola calling attention to CPC and casting our net into the streams of traffic on Broadway. Imagine the many eyes drawn to our church the invitation to services on our new sign; the prominence of the crosses on our cupola and the warm glow of our copper roof all visible signs to proclaim Come follow me! Thanks for your continuing faithful pledges! Together we will continue to create eye catching ways to cast our nets wider to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 9

Call Pam Cullop or Monies raised from the sale of our Craft Items are given to special mission ministries of CPC. The crafts group meets every Wednesday Morning. New members and project ideas are always welcome. Can t come every week? That s ok, come when you can. No special skills required! We work on various projects ranging from easy to more technical something for everyone. If you would like to help this ministry but can t attend and would like to work from home, no problem. Just let Pam know. You could sew, crochet, do art projects and then turn them over to the craft group to sell for PW Mission monies. We are a mission group but have a lot of fun in fellowship together. We would love for you to come join us and share your stories.

We work with Banner University Hospital and the Organ Donor Network to supply them with shawls which they give to the families of organ donors. The families are in grief from the loss of a loved one and the shawl can be a wonderful memory and reminder of their family member whom they lost. It is very rewarding to hear some of the wonderfully appreciative stories that come from our connection with Brian Hilty with the Donor Network and Kim Hilty with Banner University Hospital. We are always needing more crafters to make our shawls and if you would like to participate, we would be forever grateful for your assistance. You do not have to attend the meetings which are held on the first Tuesday of each month between 1-3PM in Room E-F. The only requirements are that you make the shawls approximately inches wide and approximately inches long. You may use any pattern that you like and any color is acceptable, although I will say that blue is the most requested color. We also use fleece to make the shawls and have those available to crochet around the edges. These can be completed in just a day or two and anyone who crochets may contact us to learn more about this technique. If you are available on the first Tuesday of the month, we would love to have you join us at our meeting, but you are also welcome to work at home if unable to attend. If transportation is a problem, please talk to us as we may be able to help out with that. Prayer shawl request forms are available in the church office or you may call LuAnn Cobb ( ) with the request. 15

Book Club meets on Sept 13 at 12 noon for a leisurely discussion of the books we've read this summer. Please bring your lunch and we'll eat while we talk.
