A Note from Pastor Brownson As I return to work, I once again wish to say Thank You to Pastor Melde, the Session and Personnel Committee and the entire congregation for the time you allowed me to be away. Though I missed all my church family while I was away, it was a wonderful time to conduct some personal study, to get away from Tucson as well as work, to spend time family and friends, to work on some home projects and to just relax. As planned, I began my time away with a week-long retreat at the Redemptorist Retreat Center in Picture Rocks in Northwest Tucson. It was intended to be a silent retreat, but there was considerable sharing with the other participants throughout the week. At the same time, it was a wonderful time with God and quiet meditation and reflection on the passion of our Lord, Jesus. Several weeks later, I was able to enjoy a week of rest and relaxation and the beauty of the amazing red rock formations in Sedona, Arizona. Ellen and I then took our annual trip to Rocky Point, Mexico, with Phil and Lianne Puzzo for four days of fun in the sun on the beach. I had planned to spend some time in the cool mountains of New Mexico, but with a visit from my daughter from Idaho, we had five great days with children and grandchildren as we hiked and played together all around Southern Arizona.

For much of my time away, I worked on some of the many projects that I have wanted to do around our house; laying some pavers and decorative rock as well as cleaning out the garage, the shed and some other collection areas. During the hottest part of the days, I spent time (between naps) reading and studying the history of the early church. I will be sharing some of what I have learned and gleaned from my studies over the next month or so. I want to acknowledge and say a Special Thanks to June Scouten who provided her time-share for my visit to Sedona. It was my first time in Sedona, but hopefully will not be my last. Also, a thank you to everyone else who made very generous offers to me; Lana and Rada Rich and Cathy Wade, all of whom offered the use of their New Mexico mountain cabins and to Tom and Jan Marshall who offered frequent flyer miles and to Phoebe Hoffman who made an offer of the use of a time-share. Though I was not able to take advantage of their amazing offers, I am so grateful for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Though it was great to have the time off, it is also great to be back. ~Pastor Steve Brownson Worship in July While on sabbatical, I had the opportunity to do some studies on the history and heritage of the Christian Church from the time of the Apostles through the first several centuries. Sunday Worship in July will look at some of the ways the church grew and how things have changed from that time and how things are very similar today. July 5: Communion Sunday, Acts 2:43-47 A Memorable, Mysterious Meal! Four Aspects of the Eucharist July 12: Acts 17:16-31 Take Pause! Faithfulness to God July 19: Romans 15:1-6 To Tell The Truth! Conflicts within the Church and the Development of the New Testament July 26: Luke 16:19-31 For the Fear or Love of God! Why Be a Christian and Personal Thoughts on Hell 3

Making a Difference: Stewardship 2015 Manna Bags: On the day of our Pentecost Celebration at CPC, our Mission Team set up a table where people put together a Manna Bag which could be given to someone in need on the streets of Tucson. Manna Bags are lunch bags filled with various items to help a person get through at least one meal, just like the manna in the desert of the Exodus got the Israelites through their daily meal. That very next week, reports came back from our congregation of how they were able to distribute their manna bag, and what a difference it made in a person s life (the receiver and the giver). It is thanks to your ongoing giving to CPC, that we were able to furnish all the supplies for these Manna Bags, and because of your continued generosity that has sparked our Mission Team to provide this opportunity to the congregation at various times through the year. Watch for the next time you can make a Manna Bag at CPC, and then give it to someone in need. Thank you, CPC, we are MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Z Mansion WORKship Mission Project Sunday, July 26th, join some of your church family as we participate in WORKship, a special project at the Z Mansion in downtown Tucson. We will help to make a special meal for the homeless of Tucson, and do other projects that are needed to help this great ongoing mission experience in our town. Wear comfortable clothes, and closed toe shoes are best (like tennies or other comfy, sturdy shoes [not flip flops or sandals]). Meet at CPC: 8:30 a.m. carpool, so drivers are welcome Return to CPC: Noon THE WORKSHIP PROJECT If your family s New Year s resolution went something like: "This year we resolve to spend more time together, have fun helping others, learn insane new cooking techniques, dramatically improve our first aid skills, develop a keen sense of modern street fashion, and sing joyously and loudly all while becoming breathtakingly amazing sandwich ninjas," then we have a family activity for you. It s called The WORKship Project and every Sunday morning from 9:00 am until 11:30 am, this group of volunteers mostly families feeds between 100 to 300 homeless Tucsonans at the Z Mansion downtown. In addition to serving Sunday brunch, WORKship volunteers also simultaneously staff a clothing bank, help run an extensive first-aid station, entertain their guests, and whip up over 150 lunch bags for those in need. 7

Saturday, August 15 th, our Presbytery de Cristo will join together with the Presbytery of Grand Canyon for its annual day of training. There will be all sorts of helpful classes for any of our congregation to attend that could help us all grow as a church family. Follow the link on the Presbytery s website (PresbyterydeCristo.org) and let Pastor Melde know if you are interested in attending the gathering. We can do a carpool up to the event in the Phoenix area. Not only your general giving to CPC, but especially your extra giving (Per Capita) ($36 per member this year), helps to support a denominational structure that hosts these kinds of gatherings where we can get some ongoing training to help our church be healthy and growing. Thank you for your generous support of all the ministries and mission of our congregation, and into our denomination. Together, we are MAKING A DIFFERENCE. P.S. If you have not given your extra $36 per member for our PCUSA denominational support, you can always write a check to CPC. Just earmark it for PCUSA support. Together, we are MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Now that summer has arrived it is a good time to stay indoors for activities and stay cool. Anyone who knits, crochets or sews could help us continue to keep this ministry alive. We are always looking for people to help us and would greatly appreciate any assistance you could give us. We are currently out of are working diligently to available. Keep watching narthex and for more to the mini prayer shawls but make a new supply the baskets in the Fellowship Hall appear. Prayer shawl request forms are available in the office in the Prayer Shawl Ministry mailbox. After completing the information requested, please return the form to the box on top of all folders and contact LuAnn Cobb to let her know that a request has been made. We have cards that accompany the shawls which include a prayer, history of the prayer shawl ministry and where the shawl originates (CPC). For more information or questions, please contact LuAnn Cobb at

We decided to read 3 books this summer: The 19th Wife A Novel by David Ebershoff All the Light We cannot See by Anthony Doerr Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius We will meet again at 1 p.m. on Sept. 8 in the CPC Library to discuss the three. Happy Summer Reading! The 19th Wife: A Novel The 19th Wife: It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Soon after Ann Eliza s story begins, a second exquisite narrative unfolds a tale of murder involving a polygamist family in present-day Utah. And as Ann Eliza s narrative intertwines with that, readers are pulled deeper into the mysteries of love, family, and faith. All The Light We Can Not See NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST from the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.Marie- Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. Ghost Boy They all thought he was gone. But he was alive and trapped inside his own body for ten years. In January 1988 Martin Pistorius, age twelve, fell inexplicably sick. Ghost Boy is the heart-wrenching story of one boy's return to life through the power of love and faith. Martin's emergence from his own darkness invites us to celebrate our own lives and fight for a better life for others.

The food is always plentiful and delicious...and the highlight of many a volunteer's day! The opportunity to participate in a volunteer introduction of "What a Volunteer Does at the Flea Market?" Everyone who has already agreed to volunteer, and those who are just curious about it, will be invited, and even encouraged, to attend! We promise to make the food good and the conversation lively!
