July! Whoa it s warm in Tucson. And that humidity and rise in the dew point sure can make things feel even more uncomfortably warm. And yet, July tends to be a great month for monsoon storms, and the higher temps along with the raised dew point and humidity levels cause the Texas Ranger bushes to bloom with the most beautiful purple flowers. The Colorado River Toads awaken from their hibernation and begin a chorus of croaking that is simply glorious. And yes, the snakes come out, and the tarantulas begin to crawl, and the evap coolers don t work so well, and the steering wheel is scorching, but have you noticed how the rains come to quench the thirst of the desert, and the dry river beds actually host running water? Our whole life is a mixture of things that seem wonderful and things that seem awful, challenges and joys. As people of faith, we need not wish them away, we need only to seek the presence of the Spirit in both of them, in all of them, everywhere, all the time. And we can find that presence because the Spirit is with us in joys and sorrows, in success and failure, in the heat and in the cold, and in the moderate temps. All that other stuff? It s just life, the way it is. This July, may your faith give you sight! Peace in our journeys, Pastor Steve Melde

Community Rewards Programs We received $97.97 from the Fry s Community Rewards, March thru May. According to the report from Fry s we had 19 households who shopped during that time period. Think what we could do if 100 households would participate! WOW! If you have not yet signed up, just go to Frysfood.com and look for Community Rewards Program. Enter the required information (you need to set up an account) Select Christ Presbyterian or enter our number Use your Fry s card every time you shop and let s see what we can do! Too Cool? We love our Sanctuary and our AC! However, if you get too cool during worship, there are shawls available for you to use. Just ask an usher or help yourself. They are on a rack in the northwest corner. AMAZON SMILE is another program we are enrolled in. When you are shopping on line, please go to Amazonsimle.com and register Christ Presbyterian Church as your desired charity. Every time you shop amazon smile. CPC will get credit for your purchase.

Holy Places Sacred Spaces Summer travels give us the opportunity to visit other churches and enjoy new spiritual experiences A stop at the Santuario of Chimayo near Taos, New Mexico surrounds the visitor with a tranquil atmosphere and special sense of peace. This old church, established in the very early 1800s, has become a center for many seeking physical, emotional and spiritual healing. As a sign in the church testifies, Many visitors have found consolation and peace within the adobe walls of this Santuario. Santuario of Chimayo Christ Church Santa Fe Not many miles away, a newly built church in Santa Fe proves that contemporary surroundings can also provide spiritual uplift. This church s cleanly modern worship spaces and lovely art for example the wonderful mosaic shown here evoke feelings of reverence and wonder. Returning here to Tucson, we are grateful that we too are working to make our church home a very special place for worship. Thanks to your pledges to our H2O TO GROW Capital Campaign, a beautiful new roof nears completion together with our newly refurbished landmark cupola. Your faithful pledging makes possible these projects as well as continuing efforts to enhance CPC as a center of worship, spiritual growth and fellowship. Thank you! A sign at the Santuario of Chimayo As a deer longs for a stream of cold water, so I long for you O God. Psalms 42:1

How can we say thank you to each other for all the generosity the people of CPC share with each other? By showing you the joy of the 2016 Arts Camp. Your ongoing giving to the General Fund of our church helped to make this week long arts camp possible. Though the families paid a nominal fee for their children s attendance, our ongoing, annual budget pays some of the greater expenses for the camp. So, if a picture is worth a thousand words May these pictures be multitudes of Thank You s for all you do to support the ministry and mission of CPC. 7

In May, your Personnel team met with each staff member to check in and see how their year is going, to see how they are meeting their goals, to pray with them and see what kind of help they needed to complete their jobs. In June, with the guidance of the Buildings and Grounds Team, and the approval of the Session, we changed the locks on the entire campus in order to create better security. Groups who come to utilize our campus will no longer be given a key, as we have hired Ben Thurston to be our lead Facility Monitor. From now on, when non-cpc groups use our campus our Facility Monitor will be here to open and close the facility, ensuring it s safety and care. Most of his financial compensation for doing this job will come from the suggested donations that we encourage groups to give to CPC for the use of the building. Dr. Richard Hintze earned his Doctorate in Musical Arts and promptly received an invitation to be the Associate Professor of Choral Conducting/Studies at Spring Arbor University in Michigan. Richard has served as our Director of Music over the last three years and has blessed us with his faithful spirit and incredible talent. We will miss him and Laura and their family. The Session has approved to give Richard a one time bonus to thank him for his service. If you would like to add a financial contribution you may do so in one of two ways: 1) by giving CPC a check and earmarking it Hintze Thank You. We will then add that to the bonus, without telling him what monies come from whom. 2) Gifting directly to him. Your Personnel Team is actively seeking a new leader in the ministry of music for CPC and feels confident that references from Richard as well as the head of the choral conducting department at the UofA will lead us to a wonderful new director. 9

Our group meets weekly Join Us Every Wednesday Morning 9am 12noon Room A/B Questions? Call Pam Cullop or Monies raised from the sale of our Craft Items are given to special mission ministries of CPC. The crafts group meets every Wednesday Morning. New members and project ideas are always welcome. Can t come every week? That s ok, come when you can. No special skills required! We work on various projects ranging from easy to more technical something for everyone. If you would like to help this ministry but can t attend and would like to work from home, no problem. Just let Pam know. You could sew, crochet, do art projects and then turn them over to the craft group to sell for PW Mission monies. We are a mission group but have a lot of fun in Fellowship together. We would love for you to come join us and share your stories.

We are always needing more crafters to make our shawls and if you would like to participate, we would be forever grateful for your assistance. You do not have to attend the meetings which are held on the first Tuesday of each month. The only requirements are that you make the shawls approximately inches wide and approximately inches long. You may use any pattern that you like and any color is acceptable, although I will say that blue is the most requested color. We also use fleece to make the shawls and have those available to crochet around the edges. These can be completed in just a day or two and anyone who crochets may contact us to learn more about this technique. If you are available on the first Tuesday of the month, we would love to have you join us at our meeting. We also work with Banner University Hospital and the Organ Donor Network to supply them with shawls which they give to the families of organ donors. The families are in grief from the loss of a loved one and the shawl can be a wonderful memory and reminder of their family member whom they lost. It is very rewarding to hear some of the wonderfully appreciative stories that come from our connection with Brian Hilty with the Donor Network and Kim Hilty with Banner University Hospital. Prayer shawl request forms are available in the church office or you may call LuAnn Cobb ( ) with the request. 15

We will meet on Tues, Sept 13, at 12 noon for a leisurely discussion of the books we've read. Please bring your lunch and we'll eat while we talk. Have a great summer! Keep reading! Summer Reading List: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield Dancing with a Ghost: Exploring Indian Reality by Rupert Ross Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life by Nick Vujicic. See you in September!
