3 Looking Ahead with Steve Steve Bateman Ephesians, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and First Bible Church. The first line of any article needs to grab the reader s attention. If it worked, you are wondering how these four things are connected. Let s start with Ephesians. For over a year, we have traveled through the book of Acts together, and now I contemplate life after Acts. What s next? The end of Acts leaves Paul in a Roman prison for two years. What did he do for those two years in chains? A lot of reading and writing. Writing what? For starters, the prison epistles of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. So going from Acts to Ephesians is chronologically easy to do. Ephesians gives us insight into Paul s ministry from a Roman prison. Hillary and Donald? In the first presidential election I voted in, the choice was between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Fifty-two Americans were being held hostage by Muslims in Iran, inflation was 13%, the world economy was in recession, and I had just read C. Everett Koop s book, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?. The choice for me then, at the age of 20 in 1980, seemed clear. I ve voted in every presidential election since then, just as I will in the one upcoming. But I ve never seen one like this. Does Ephesians inform our voting? Our public discourse? Our political involvement? I argue yes. History proves that theology always has political implications. Jesus seems to have ticked off both conservatives and the liberals. It was hard to put him in a box with a label. I think good preachers will do the same. Being faithful to God s Word means we speak the truth to power, no matter if the powerful are Democrats or Republicans. There are some traits about each candidate I can admire. And there are some traits about each I must deplore. So, if you find it hard to know where I stand on particular candidates, that s probably a good thing. But I promise that you will never find it hard to know where I stand on the issues. And Ephesians speaks to some very relevant issues. Ephesians was written to a church full of Christ-followers who were called to live holy, light-filled lives in a morally confused culture that had lost its way. Paul s instruction? Therefore walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called. So as we leave Acts and turn to Ephesians, we pray, Now Lord, in this America, in this generation, help us to walk that way. FBC Newsletter 3 August 2016
4 Please mark your calendar for the 5th annual Refuge of Grace Fundraising Dinner Thursday, September 29 6pm-7:30pm Double Tree Hotel, Decatur Speaker will be Commissioner Jeff Dunn Alabama State Department of Corrections Reservations may be made at beginning September 1 Nungester Back to School Ministry In just a few short days school will start back and our friends at Nungester school will need our help to make their school year be the best it can be! We need people willing to be a Lunch Buddy. By having lunch with a child once a week Lunch Buddies encourage and mentor a child in positive ways and the principal has seen a reduction in disciplinary referrals. We really need men to step up and participate in this program. There are so many boys attending who do not have a positive male influence in their life. Men, we need you!! Also each year we collect much needed supplies for the school and the following is a list from the principal: >We provide weekend meals for families having a hard time feeding their children. >Once a week a group of FBC volunteers present the gospel through the First Priority Program. Decatur Place Apartments. So much involvement with this school but there is so much more we could do. If you would like to volunteer or have suggestions for new ways to help, please let me know. Thank you to those that are already helping and to those that will be joining the effort to help make this school great! Sherry Fite FBC Newsletter 4 August 2016
