1 September Fruitful Practices Pledge Campaign "Mission outreach" can mean anything, but in this case it means school supplies. For several years, the Mission Team has provided school supplies for the students at Lagonda Elementary who lack the financial resources to purchase that lengthy "school supply" list. This school year, eight packets of supplies for each grade level have been given to Lagonda staff for teachers to distribute as needed. Given the 350 +/- students at Lagonda, High Street's generosity touches roughly one-seventh of the student body. That does not include those donations made for sundry items such as tissues, book bags, Clorox wipes, erasers (large and small), pencils - all the extras that keep a classroom running smoothly. Can you even imagine what it feels like for a child to go to school without a book bag?? Deepest thanks for your kindness and generosity to the High Street Family and Friends from the Mission Team. From Lagonda School Newsletter Hopefully you have all received pledge cards for the year They can be put into the collection plate, mailed or dropped off at the office. Consecration of our gifts will be on Sunday, October 22. Additional pledge cards can be found in the back of the church. Thank You. 2 October 2017 To our High Street Family, Dick and I would like to thank you all for all the support and love you showed us during our daughter Susan's 13 month battle with cancer. It was a very aggressive and nasty cancer, and we knew that from the beginning. She was a fighter though and she never quit! When one treatment wasn't working she would look at the Dr's and say alright what's next? All the cards, the s, phone calls and hugs that you all gave us kept us going. At the end, she went very fast but we had time to say good bye and that was a comforting time for all of us. Since her passing, you have again been so supportive, so many of you made the trip to Worthington for her visitation hours only to stay in line for over an hour to pay your respects. DIck and I will never be able to tell you how much that meant to us. Her husband Tim counted names in the registry and there were almost 500 people that called that evening. She and Tim had touched so many lives. So many people loved her and came to us with tears in their eyes or just crying and told us how much she did for others. God took a good one when He took her!! We are receiving cards with your support and love and even though it was hard to come back to church the first time, you all were there again, giving hugs and support. We would ask that you continue to pray not only for us, but Susan's husband Tim and their children Bryn and Tyler. They seem to be doing alright but we can't always tell if they are being honest with us or are hiding things from us knowing we worry about them. Tim has taken a leave of absence from work, his company allows that, so he can figure out how to be a single parent. He is also trying to set up a memorial fund in Susan's name to help the special need kids where she worked, and that's much harder than we all thought with all the paper work. Although it doesn't seem to be enough, thank you is all we can say. We wish we could give each and every one of you a hug and tell you personally what you've done for us, means to us. Blessings, Dick and Deanna Soldner Too Many Unwanted Puppies and Kittens September 14 we granted Columbus Dog Connection the use of our parking lot and dining hall to facilitate a spay and neuter operation for cats and dogs. Over 30 animals were seen by vets who provided the services for a reduced fee to their owners. Some of the cats were catch and release to reduce the population of unwanted animals. It started at 7am and ended at 8pm. The next one is scheduled some time in November. By the way, the operations were done in the medical van, not the dining hall. The dining hall just housed the waiting animals in cages. It was very well run and no one would have guessed they were here! If you want to help with the next one, just let Marcia in the office know. Thank you to everyone who has and continues to help with the MOPS group! We have had two great meetings already, with a total of 12 moms and 17 kids (+ one baby on the way)! There is plenty of room for more and we hope the group grows, so please continue to spread the word about this new ministry. We can still use more childcare workers and subs, if you have a heart for children and are available on Wednesday mornings, please contact Susan Roosen at slroosen13@gmail.com or Thank you! 2 C e l e b r a t e N u r t u r e S e r v e
3 October 2017 Rick Steves Luther and the Reformation Documentary Sunday, October 15 3 PM The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. In 1517, the German monk Martin Luther collected 95 points to stoke discussion about the corruption of the medieval Church. He then nailed his famous 95 Theses to the door of his hometown church in Wittenberg. With that small, symbolic act, Luther unleashed a storm of change, kicking off the most important religious event of the last millennium the Protestant Reformation. To help those interested understand the whats, hows, and whys of it all, Rick Steves produced a public television special, called Rick Steves Luther and the Reformation. A screening of that documentary is what this Sanctuary Series is. There is no admission charge; however, a goodwill offering will be taken to assist in ongoing support of the monthly Sanctuary Series. A reception will follow the screening in The Commons at the church. The Reformation even if you re not a Lutheran is a very big deal. As 2017 approached, Rick wanted to contribute to our society s appreciation of this event on its 500th anniversary. His mission: to produce an hour-long documentary that would be useful for Lutheran churches, other Protestant denominations, Roman Catholic churches, and also secular media. He wanted the film to be a teaching tool for churches and also have wider appeal for broadcast on public television reaching far beyond a Sunday school audience. There have been good movies about Martin Luther, but Rick planned a broader coverage -explaining the historic, economic, and social context of the Reformation, and how this tumultuous age helped Europe leave the Middle Ages and enter our Modern Age. Con d next column Cont d Weaving the story of Martin Luther into the big historic sweep, Rick dealt candidly with Luther s human foibles and weaknesses. His authenticity is endearing. He followed the tortured path of a troubled young monk, as he fought depression, walked from Germany to Rome to sort out his feelings, and climbed the Holy Stairs on his knees struggling to make sense of it all and eventually becoming the Great Reformer. As a tour guide and travel teacher, writing the script provided an opportunity to explain concepts people may have heard of but didn t really understand concepts like relics, purgatory, indulgences, iconoclasm and to delve into the Counter-Reformation, the Thirty Years War, and Lutheran notions like the priesthood of all believers. Trustees invite everyone to a Work Day on Saturday, Oct 7th primarily to clean up the outdoor areas surrounding the church. The workday will begin at 9 AM and conclude at noon. Coffee and donuts will be provided. This is Ruth Fischer. Inspired by the book The Turquoise Table, Find Connection and Community in Your Own Front Yard, by Kristin Schell, she has created this welcoming setup on the church front lawn on Thursday mornings, from 911am, weather permitting. Walkers and bicyclers have visited with her. Drivers have stopped to inquire and someone called the office and said. What a wonderful idea. Great initiative Ruth! 230 E.
