We received seven new members, Sunday October 7. We launched our Fruitful Practices Stewardship Campaign and the response has been encouraging. Aaron Clark and Kent Brooks preached and proclaimed the Good News of God s Calling (October 14). Nominations for 2019 Leadership have been completed. Our 2019 Operating Budget is in development. I officiated at our Pet Blessing-with four dogs and their families blessed. Madison Kairos #9 was a glory to God: Thank you for 100 dozen cookies and $500 in donations, and of course all your prayers. Ten members of four gangs at MaCI formed a new community, a Christian Community, where barriers enforced through violence were broken down through a sharing of God s unconditional love and forgiveness. Our Time and Talent Fair was a success (42 responses); we are hoping for more Time and Talent Sheets to be completed and returned to the office. Fun for 6 -small group gatherings have been organized and announced. Eight members joined Jill and I at the parsonage for food and games (October 20). Kids Hope Mentoring at Lagonda Elementary is underway. Five mentors from High Street are meeting weekly with Lagonda Elementary students; my buddy is Karson and he s a fourth grader. 3 Cont. A Word From Our Pastor Had my first Wednesday, October 17 at St. Mark s. What a wonderful little congregation-had their first VBS in years this past summer! We applied for a District Grant to support the High Street Leadership Academy for Teen to be offered after school this Spring. Volunteer support will be critical. More information will be coming about YCPC (Youth Creating Positive Change), our first Leadership Academy Term, in the future. Aaron Clark convened a meeting of neighborhood church leaders to discuss collaborative Youth Ministry Events. All attendees were excited about planning something big for youth in the spring. MOPs is growing at a remarkable rate. We have 26 moms ( including three mentor moms) and 38 children and we are receiving more expressions of interest from families in the community. Volunteers are needed for nursery and childcare. As a downtown leader we are being asked to share responsibility for an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service to be held at the Central Community Center this year, November 20 at 7 pm. Our theme for the combined service is Civility and the Role of our Congregations Promoting Civility in all aspects of our lives. We were the host for Downtown Church Sunday Taizé Service at 5 pm Sunday (October 21). It is a meaningful monthly worship service in times of conflict and change. The end of October Jill and I will be on Vacation, traveling to see my sister in Texas (October 25-31). Dr. Jocelyn Roper, our District Superintendent will be preaching in my place (October 28). There is a Staff Appreciation Event scheduled for November 1. I will be officiating at one my granddaughter wedding in Columbus November 3. Bishop Palmer will be meeting with Miami Valley churches at Troy First UMC Sunday afternoon November 11, 4 pm to discuss the Way Forward Initiative to be voted on at General Conference. I hope a good number of us can attend and participate. God is breaking through for High Street and Springfield and we have a significant role in making progress for a glory of God. I thank you and praise God for your support and contribution to the many ministries here. God bless you and your family, Dr. L. Steven Fewell, Lead Pastor 230 E. 4 Sanctuary Series Featuring Trill Seekers Flute Choir November 11 at 3:00 pm The Trill Seekers Flute Choir will be presented in concert Sunday, November 11 at 3:00 pm, as part of the monthly Sanctuary Series at High Street United Methodist Church. Although there is no admission charge, a freewill offering will be taken to help support the series and a reception will follow the concert in The Commons at the church. The Trill Seekers Flute Choir is a member of the University of Dayton New Horizons Music Program. This unique program, designed for adults, was initially founded at the Eastman School of Music by Professor Emeritus and still active leader Dr. Roy Ernst (also a flutist). There are now approximately 250 New Horizons Music Programs world-wide The Dayton chapter was started by Dr. Linda Hartley, UD Professor of Music, who founded and has directed the program there for almost 20 years. The program partners with the University of Dayton music education majors who offer music instruction as an extension of their teacher education fieldwork. The Trill Seekers perform traditional and classical music arrangements, many arranged by choir member Mike OBrien. The program will include Teddy Bear s Picnic, When I m 64, Canon in D, Ashokan Farewell, and a medley of patriotic tunes to honor veterans in a tribute to Armed Forces Day. 4 Celebrate Nurture Serve

6 We Love Our Young People CYW-AGES 3-12 CHILDREN AND YOUTH WORSHIP Our Children and Youth worship is an hour packed full of music, dance, word, praise and worship. This a great opportunity to teach and train our children and youth about worship, worshipful attitudes, and the purpose of worship using a variety of styles. Children and Youth are given the opportunity to learn new exciting ways to Praise and worship GOD. God s Word is presented to the children and youth weekly in ways that they are able to comprehend. Our goal is to raise our next generation to be worshippers of God to teach them to experience the Glory of God through worship, and to leave a legacy of worshippers. TEEN MINISTRY AGES High Street strives to build a Teen Ministry who loves the Lord with all their soul, mind, and spirit. Our goal is to lead unsaved Teens to a relationship with Jesus Christ and strengthen saved Teens in their relationship with Jesus Christ. To bring unity among young people from different backgrounds. To provide Teens within High Street and the community with a safe place to learn and grow into who God has called them to be. Teens will have sessions on various issues about real life situations they face daily, bible scriptures media, relationships, habits, healthy choices, etc...to build friendships that will last a lifetime. All guidance will be given through the word of God. We want to let our teens know that we care, love, and support them. We also want them to live life to the fullest through Christ Jesus. 6 C e l e b r a t e N u r t u r e S e r v e

7 We Love Our Young People Sunday Morning CYW & Teen Worship Schedules 9:30 am Children, Youth and Teens will meet downstairs in the CYW room (AKA-Carr Rm) for Praise Worship and then will break-up into their individual morning classes with their ministry leaders. 11:00 am Children, Youth and Teens will meet in the Sanctuary for Praise Worship, dismissed to go downstairs, and then will break-up into their individual morning classes with their ministry leaders. CYW & Teens will be dismissed by Kent Brooks from the Sanctuary and at that time report to the CYW room (AKA-Carr Rm) downstairs. *On the 5th Sunday of each month we have a combined Family and Friends Service at 10:00am* Children can be picked up by their parents in the Commons after services. If you need to retrieve your child any earlier please go downstairs to pick them up. Please watch for upcoming events on Facebook and our website. Family Life Parents Night Out With all that is going on, there will not be a parents night out on November 2. We are planning to do something during the holidays with all of the children, youth and teens. There are also different activities on the table being discussed and planning for at this time. Downtown Youth Collaboration Pastor Steven and Aaron Clark are planning a Downtown Youth Collaboration, where a few partner churches can work together to teach the word of God to our younger generation. The first meeting of the Downtown Youth Collaboration was a success! All attendees were excited about getting started and planning some things for the youth of our community. The hardest part is done, just reaching out, getting someone to respond, getting people to that first meeting, and trying to agree on doing things together. That has been done, now we will move on to the planning stages with our neighbors. May God be with us, and we need all of your prayers now. 7 C e l e b r a t e N u r t u r e S e r v e

8 We Love Our Moms MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) News MOPS News The MOPS group is growing and having a great time so far this year! We have 27 ladies that have attended and about 35 kids. For our fall service project this year we will be packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child again. We will be packing at least 10 boxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, crafts, & activities for kids ages 2 to 14. Each box costs $9 to ship so we are asking for donations from the congregation to cover the $90 shipping expenses. If you would like to contribute to this project, please place your donation of any amount, clearly marked "MOPS OCC" either in the offering plate on Sunday morning or take it to the church office. Any money that is above the $90 will be used to pack & ship more boxes! The deadline is Nov 14th. Thank you! If you would like to pack your own shoebox, please feel free to do so and bring it to church by Nov 14th and we will take it to the collection point with our group. For more information about what goes in a shoebox, please go to See Susan Roosen with any questions. Thanks! 230 E. High St., Springfield OH (937) HighStreetUMC.com /HighStreetUMC 8
