The motto is based on 1 Peter 1: It first appeared in the court of Frederick the Wise in He had it sewn onto the right sleeve of the court s official clothing, which was worn by prince and servant alike. It was used by Frederick s successors, his brother John the Steadfast, and his nephew John Frederick the Magnanimous. It became the official motto of the Smalcaldic League and was used on flags, banners, swords, and uniforms as a symbol of the unity of the Lutheran laity who struggled to defend their beliefs, communities, families, and lives against those who were intent on destroying them. It was found inscribed inside churches, over doorways, on foundation stones, even on horse s helmets! The VDMA logo and statement has appeared throughout Lutheran churches worldwide and remains an enduring motto of the Reformation to this day. As we approach the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, there have been countless books written, a new movie/documentary produced by Thrivent and recently aired on PBS and many other celebrations going on. However, first and foremost behind all of the Reformation was that the Word of God was proclaimed in its purity, hence the beginning of this article. Here at St Peter we will be exploring Dr. Luther s commitment to the Word of God by having a Reformation themed sermon each Sunday, including today s sermon. Although this Sunday is LWML Sunday and is also marking their 75 th Anniversary, part of the sermon has to do with the Reformation also. (cont d)

2 The Key to St. Peter Page 2 As part of the Reformation 500 Celebration, our Circuit will be joining together on Reformation weekend in Wichita Falls. There will be events held at historic St Paul Lutheran Church on Saturday morning and the Reformation Walk will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in the early afternoon. Each church in the circuit is taking a part of the walk. We will be manning the church part of the walk. On Sunday afternoon there will be a Circuit Seven combind worship service also held at Our Redeemer Lutheran. All of the pastors of our circuit will be involved as well as some of the members of our choir. Please make plans to attend if you are able. The 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation is a great mile stone, not just for Lutheran but for all of Christianity. We are planning a viewing of the 2001 Luther movie. Keep an eye out for the date and time. When the new documentary: Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World, is released in November we will also be planning another viewing. Below is a list of the Reformation weekend list of events: Reformation 500! The whole month of October, and especially the weekend of October 28 th 29 th, will be a special time as we celebrate the 500 th anniversary of the start of the Reformation! Each week we ll have sermons to highlight different aspects of the Protestant Reformation, which began with Luther nailing his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, Reformation Convocation: On Reformation weekend, we ll start on Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wichita Falls, with a lecture by Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Gibbs, professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, who will describe what the Reformation means for us today. Registration is 9-9:30 a.m., and the lecture ends at 11:30 a.m. Reformation Walk: That same afternoon at Our Redeemer, you and your family will be able to experience the Reformation as you tour 10 different stations, hearing costumed characters describe different aspects of life in the time of Luther. Groups of will leave from the check-in station every 12 minutes, beginning at 12:30 pm (last group: 4:06 pm) and will be guided from station to station. Note: You need to register to secure a start time. Registration begins TODAY, October 1 st by going to Red River Reformation Celebration on Facebook, or at and clicking on the Experience the Reformation link. If you are not comfortable with the Facebook or the internet, call the ORLC Church Office at and your registration will be taken over the phone. Red River Reformation Service: On Sunday at 4:00 pm, we will gather again at ORLC to celebrate with an area-wide Reformation worship service, followed by a fellowship meal. The Rev. Dr. Jeffery Gibbs will also be the preacher at this service. So save the dates so that you can join with others as we celebrate our faith and heritage. Invite your friends, too!

The 2018 Budget, election of officers, discussion of Reformation activities - all very important items in the functioning for our congregation. Please plan to attend! CONGRATULATIONS TO WILL JONES! Once again Will s star is shining brightly as he celebrates induction into the Chico High School chapter of the National Honor Society. We have seen many of Will s accomplishments over the past year.this one is truly a major one. We re proud of you, Will MIDWEEK IN FULL SWING! Our halls are full of the sounds of 36 enrolled children every Wednesday afternoon. We thank all those who are volunteering to keep this program going

5 The Key to St. Peter Page 5 MISSION SUNDAY/RALLY DAY Thanks to Elijah the Comfort Dog for being our Missionary of the Day for our Mission Festival. His work in caring for those who need comfort is so special. We thank Redeemer in Wichita Falls for sharing him with us.

6 The Key to St. Peter Page 6 The Carpenter s Crew Once again hammers and saws were busy in St. Jo as our ramp builders were hard at work. Someone whose outside access had been severely limited now has a runway and is extremely grateful.

7 The Key to St. Peter Page 7 LWML Thanks to all who made this year s Tasting Bee such a rousing success. 90+ ladies enjoyed sampling approximately 60 dishes of all types. The Fellowship Hall looked fantastic as we welcomed our friends. Honorable mention to our Husbandly Babysitters who did such a fantastic job. We also note that all proceeds (approx. 1,100.00) will go to support Seminary Students.
