1 June We Say Goodbye, We Say Hello High Street s Farewell to the Allen Family When Someone Leaves, It s Because Someone Else is About to Arrive. Paulo Coelhi, The Zahir Sunday, June 5 Time: Noon, following the 2 nd Service Where: High Street s What: Special Luncheon---pulled chicken, hot dogs, drinks and a special cake will be served. Please bring either a side dish or a dessert to share. We ll be honoring the Allens for their service to High Street and sending them off with love and blessings to their new assignment in Dublin. We hope that you all will be able to attend the service of your choice and the luncheon. Please RSVP for the luncheon by Tuesday, May 31, by signing up in the Narthex, calling the church office ( ), on Facebook, or on the church website. Many Thanks from the Transition Team Sunday, June 26 On this day we officially and eagerly welcome our new Pastor, Dr. Steven Fewell and his wife Jilaine. Steven comes from a downtown congregation in Zanesville, OH and is excited about providing leadership and serving at High Street as our new Lead Pastor. Steven came to ministry with some experience working in the world and understands the difficulty of serving God faithfully and seeks to accomplish God s mission and purposes while we grow in faith together. Steven and Jilaine have five married children and eighteen grandchildren who live in Ohio and they plan to celebrate with their parents on this first day of Steven s service to High Street, and the church picnic. We warmly welcome Steven and Jilaine to High Street. General Conference Highlights pg.2 Electronic Giving Information pg. 3 Church Picnic Announcement pg E. 2 General Conference delegates hit the pause button on the denomination's quadrennial debates related to homosexuality. Delegates voted to accept the recommendation of the Council of Bishops to table all proposals relating to human sexuality and form a special commission that would completely examine and possibly recommend revisions of every paragraph in the Book of Discipline related to human sexuality. The commission would represent the different regions of a denomination on four continents as well as the varied perspectives of the church. We accept our role as spiritual leaders to lead The United Methodist Church in a pause for prayer to step back from attempts at legislative solutions and to intentionally seek God's will for the future, said Council of Bishops president Bishop Bruce Ough in announcing the recommendation. The bishops also suggested they might call a special General Conference in 2018 or 2019 to deal with such proposals. The United Methodist Church is on track to get its first new hymnal since 1989, and this one will be internet-cloud based and print-on-demand the first high-tech hymnal for a mainline denomination. We pray that the contents of the hymnal will give voice to a new generation of United Methodists as we grow in our discipleship and live as bearers of the gospel of Jesus Christ, said the Rev. Jackson Henry, a Tennessee Conference delegate, staff member at Discipleship Ministries and longtime church music minister. The 2020 General Conference will need to approve the Hymnal Advisory Committee s recommendations, with release of the new hymnal coming as early as Delegates to General Conference 2016 overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling on United Methodist agencies to raise awareness about the harm caused by sports teams that use mascots or symbols that disrespect Native Americans. The petition was amended in committee, deleting language that would have called on United Methodist groups not to have meetings in cities that have sports teams with such mascots or symbols. On May 18, delegates focused on the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre, a historical tragedy with deep Methodist involvement. Speakers included a historian and descendants of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian survivors of the attack. Mountain Sky Area Bishop Elaine J.W. Stanovsky had joined the descendants in planning the event, the latest effort yet by The United Methodist Church to atone for the Sand Creek Massacre. We re here to listen and to tell the truth, Stanovsky told delegates. Delegates voted to withdraw United Methodist general church agency membership from the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. The church was a founding member of the organization in The United Methodist Board of Church and Society and United Methodist Women are currently members. The 2004, 2008 and 2012 General Conferences have debated staying in the organization, because some church members disagree with the coalition s position on abortion. The argument to stay is to have a voice at the table. These updates were adapted from stories found on the UMC website.
