2 A Word From Our Pastor High Street Family: On the occasion of our celebration of the Birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, we launch our Black History Month Remembrance with wonderful guest preachers for both services. This Sunday, Jan. 27, Kent Brooks will proclaim the Good News and teach us about the importance of Gospel Music in history of black culture in America. At 3 p.m. this Sunday, our Sanctuary Series will feature the Gospel Music Workshop of America (Dayton Chapter) under the guidance of our Kent Brooks. Next Sunday, Feb. 3, Dr. Jocelyn Roper will preach and assist me with Holy Communion. Throughout the month of February, we will celebrate the historic leadership of blacks in our Springfield Community. Dan Walter is helping me research and highlight distinguished historic persons and event. Sunday, Feb. 17, Bishop Joseph Sprague will preach about Tough and Tender Grace Relations and share some guidance about building community and making progress with love. Wednesdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, and 27, at 6 p.m. I will facilitate a small group book discussion about what we learned from reading Letters Across the Divide: Two Friends Explore Racism, Friendship, and Faith written by David Anderson and Brent Zuercher. Books are available in the office for a cost of $15 each. Childcare for younger children will be available with prior reservations. Our Children and Youth Ministries continue to bear fruit. Our MOPs group continues to grow in number and spirit, more moms, more children, more volunteers. Praise God! MOPs leadership has their Annual Chili Cookoff (Fellowship and Fund Raising) scheduled for Friday, February 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Commons. Good time for all! Minister Aaron Clark has been working hard and joyously collaborating with other churches and community partners. From his leadership has come an All City Youth Mixer Wednesday, Feb. 13 6:30 p.m., at First Lutheran. Call Aaron to see how you might participate, Invite your children and grandchildren, your neighbors children and grandchildren. Working with Springfield Promise we hope to expand participation in our Parents Night Out Event scheduled for Friday March 1, 6 p.m., more kids, more volunteers needed to help. Aaron has more details about both events. Please reach out to help! Working with Kent and the Worship Team, we have scheduled an exciting Lent and Easter Season of Worship and Small Group Fellowship. Our theme is On the Road to the Cross. We will be having evening worship services at 6:30 p.m. for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. More information to come. Over recent months three small groups have been meeting for Fun 4 Six. Those three groups will be wrapping up their fellowship soon. Look for sign-up sheets for our next round of Fun 4 Six. Fun 4 Six is an opportunity to meet monthly with other High Street families for fun, sometimes a meal, other times recreation or entertainment, and still other times just for discussion. We will be asking members of the three groups to share about their experience at worship. Don t miss our next round. February we host the Central Community Meal at Central Community Kitchen. Sign up sheets are in the hall. We host about 100 to 150 neighbors for dinner Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. We staff two shifts: set up, welcome, and serve; welcome, serve, and clean up. Check times available to help. The weather may be challenging and unpredictable but fun and growth at High Street during these winter months are guaranteed! See you at church! God bless. 3 Sanctuary Series February 17, 2019 The Wittenberg Singers & Wittenberg Chamber Singers The Wittenberg Singers and Chamber Singers will present a concert at High Street United Methodist Church in Springfield, OH, on Sunday, February 17, at 3:00 pm. The program will feature both exotic, and familiar music. One of the sets of music will be devoted to texts about nature. For the Beauty of the Earth, by John Rutter, is the familiar piece from the set, but other music from Jake Runestad and Gwyneth Walker will offer beautiful poetry mixed with unique vocal and instrumental sounds. A set of nocturnes and sacred music will round out the program for the Wittenberg Singers. The Chamber Singers will sing a few pieces from their upcoming tour. The Wittenberg Singers is a treble choir that remains active on campus performing at services and several concerts each semester. The Wittenberg Singers are comprised of students from a wide variety of academic programs. In rehearsals and performances, singers are charged to lead personal, professional, and civic lives of creativity, service, compassion, and integrity in the pursuit of musical excellence. The Chamber Singers are a selective group of nine singers that are chosen from both the Wittenberg Choir, and the Wittenberg Singers. They will be touring around the Midwest with the Wittenberg Choir during the first week in March. Erik Zinter is the Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Wittenberg University. He earned a Bachelor s degree in Music Education from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, a Master s degree in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in choral conducting from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. As a member of the faculty at Wittenberg, his responsibilities include teaching music education courses, aural skills, choral conducting, student teaching supervision, and directing three Wittenberg choral ensembles. Dr. Zinter has more than fifteen years of experience teaching choral music at the high school, college, and community level. Choirs under his direction have participated in numerous state, regional, and national events. Zinter remains active as a singer, clinician, and guest conductor. 230 E. 4 February Guest Speakers For the month of February we will be having Guest Speakers in the celebration of Black History month. On Sunday, February 17, Bishop C. Joseph Sprague will be our guest. Recognized for emphasizing internal spiritual nurture and external mission and justice-seeking outreach as vehicles for congregation renewal, Sprague was senior pastor of North Broadway United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio when elected to the episcopacy in 1996 by the North Central Jurisdiction. Previously, he had served county-seat, inner city, and university congregations. Sprague was Executive Director of both the Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Massachusetts Council of Churches. He has served as adjunct faculty at both Ohio United Methodist seminaries. Presently, he is a non-partisan organizer for voter registration in Ohio. Joe was assigned as Bishop of the Chicago Episcopal Area and the Northern Illinois Conference, September 1, 1996, and completed his term of service there upon retirement, September 01, Prior to retirement, he also served in Springfield, OH. Joe is known for combining biblical scholarship, personal piety, preaching and teaching with social justice ministries and commitments. Sought as a preacher and a teacher, he is a voice for peace, an inclusive church, racial justice and gender equality. 5 We Love Our Young People Youth Collaborative Wednesday, February 13th The first collaborative Youth Mixer will be Wednesday, February 13 at 6:00 pm at the First Lutheran Church. With the collaboration of surrounding churches and Promise Neighborhood, this has become a dream come true! Prayers have been answered, we have now planned the first engagement for the youth of our community and are in the stages of planning more. If you have questions, would like to know more, or would like to help with the Youth Collaborative, please speak to Aaron Clark. Unique & Unified Youth Fest Saturday, April 27th, this will be the second year for the Unique & Unified Youth Fest. We had a great turnout last year and plan for many more this year. Unique & Unified Youth Fest will be held at the Central Community Center, downtown Springfield, time to be announced. Youth Summer Camp The Youth Summer Camp will be July 15-July 19, 10:00-2:00pm. The Youth had a ball last year and can t wait to come back! So, we have decided to do it again, Bigger & Better! If you would like to take part in the Youth Summer Camp or any other upcoming activities, please call Aaron Clark at LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders (Youth Creating Positive Change) The mission of Youth Academy is to empower and develop youth within the community through the word of God with leadership skills, character building and to establish/strengthen connections among youth within the community to positively produce change for the community in a creative way. We are committed to developing, and nurturing the God-given leadership gift given to each student. The Leadership Academy will be held April 08-May10, 2019 on Monday s and Wednesdays at the Central Community Center, downtown Springfield. 230 E. 7 We Love Our Young People SAVE THE DATE FOR VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL July 28 August 1 At TO MARS AND BEYOND our Voyagers (participants) will explore where God s power can take them, experience exciting stories from the Bible, encounter God s limitless love and power, and discover ways to serve God and others. WE ARE STARTING STAFF RECRUITMENT NOW! We need staff to lead Bible stories, crafts, science, recreation, and snacks. We need staff to guide children to each of the activity settings. We need leaders for the 3 rd -5 th graders who participate in the Mission Machine experience. We need staff to serve at the registration table. We need staff to create the decorations that convert our sanctuary into a space travel adventure. We need an event photographer. We need prayer partners before, during, and after VBS. 8 Congregation News & Notes MOPs Chili Cook-off and Fundraiser: High Street is scheduled to help the month of February. Volunteer sheets for each Tuesday in February are on the table in the Commons Hallway-Please sign-up now for as many Tuesdays as you can! Our schedule is as follows: set-up runs from 2:30-5:00 and serving from 5:00-close. If you have any time to spare on these busy days, please consider spending it with the folks at the Central Community Kitchen! Open Hands Free Store Until further notice, we are not accepting any clothing or household goods. During January we are re-organizing the store. You are invited to come support MOPS and have a great time at our 2nd annual Chili Cookoff & Dessert Auction Fundraiser on Friday, February 8th, from 5:30-7:30 pm! There will be lots of different chili recipes to sample and vote for, then you can get a bowl of your favorite. Tickets will be $5 per person at the door with a family maximum of $20. But save room for dessert because our live dessert auction will follow, featuring auctioneer Curtis Mumma. If you would like to donate a chili or a dessert for this event, please contact Susan Roosen or highstreetmops@gmail.com or sign-up in the Commons hallway. Thank you! On Mondays, we need a volunteer to come in for easy bookkeeping of the inventory card. We are always looking for volunteers to join our teams during the 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th Tuesdays, and the 4 th, 5 th Saturdays of each month. Come join us! Due to the partial government shut-down, Open Hands Free Store is currently short on canned vegetables and peanut butter. The Missions Team is sponsoring a Can Drive to meet this need. From January 20-February 03, the OHFS Grocery Cart (and a basket for overflow cans) will be placed in the narthex, ready to receive your donations. If you prefer to bring cash to purchase these items, the Greenbacks for Groceries jar will be sitting in the grocery cart, Family Life / PNO Parents Night Out is a Friday Fun Night that gives parents a chance to enjoy an evening (alone), and gives the kids the opportunity to have fun together, without parents. The first PNO of 2019 will be Friday, March 1st from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Family Life needs volunteers for this and future events. Cool. 3/4 c cider vinegar 1 Tbs water 1/2 c veg oil 1 c sugar (or little less) 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp pepper Drain and rinse beans and put in large bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour cooled vinegar mixture over. Cover. 9 Congregation News & Notes Leadership Planning Retreat: An Inspiring Beginning to 2019!! Nearly all of our church leaders set aside several hours on Saturday, January 5 th to focus on the growth and development of our Church Family and Ministries. During the morning we enjoyed worship and fellowship together and then got to work sharing our Hopes for High Street and developing the Goals that will move us toward achievement of those Hopes. It was inspiring to hear what is in each of our hearts and encouraging that our thoughts blend together so well. In the afternoon, even more joined us for pizza and a first opportunity of the year to meet with their own particular team for more fellowship and a time to start their work together. There were several new faces which was very exciting! Thanks to all who accepted the invitation to spend time getting to know each other more deeply and sharing in the work of our Church. 10 Congregation News & Notes High Street-Actively Loving Mother Earth Submitted by Marcia Lyons A relationship with God's creation and a ministry of caring for and healing the earth are integral to what it means to be a United Methodist. The following is an excerpt from the Social Principles: The Natural World: "All creation is the Lord s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings. God has granted us stewardship of creation. We should meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect." We are doing the right things at High Street. We stopped using Styrofoam cups for hot drinks. They are unhealthy and they create waste. Remember trash doesn't go away...it just goes elsewhere. At a minimum, every week we pour 50 cups of coffee and that, times 52 weeks is 2600 cups a year that do not become a problem for Mother Earth. Also not having the recurring expense of buying cups saves us money. We use washable plates and tableware for our fellowship meals. Yes, we have to wash dishes but that brings its own surprising value! We are saving our leftover fellowship snacks in reusable containers instead of plastic bags. We changed almost all of our light bulbs to LED's for efficiency of electricity and we do our best to buy electricity at a good rate. We have our thermostats programmed to heat or cool rooms only when necessary. We have weathered stripped around our doors to reduce drafts. We are studying recycling. It is complicated. Most of our attempts at recycling, I have learned, contaminate the process and turns it into trash anyway. More to learn. Have we done all that we can? We don't know until we hear your ideas. If you are interested in High Street s growing efforts to be better stewards of our earth please let me know. I subscribe to the organization below for helpful information.
