The PoST Volume 28 Issue 9 Before the Reformation of 1517 CE, the Roman Catholic Church was the only church allowed in the Holy Roman Empire. Anyone who didn t agree with whatever the Roman Catholic Church did would be kicked out of the church (excommunicated), was denied the sacraments, and was not considered a part of the church at all. In America today we talk about many churches, and when we get frustrated with the one where we worship, we just look for another one that suits us better. In actual fact, that is using the word church incorrectly. We Christians today may mean our congregation, or a denomination, or even the building in which we worship as the church. But the one true CHURCH is made of all those people in the world who believe and trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Only God knows who is in the CHURCH, because no one else can see into someone s heart or mind and know if they are a believer. *St. Timothy s Lutheran Church is our congregation, which meets in the building on Mill Street. *The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is our synod, which is only part of the Lutheran Church, which is our denomination. Other denominations include Methodist, Baptist, Episcopal, Anglican, United Church of Christ, Brethren, and others. *Christian is what we usually call members of the CHURCH, regardless of their denomination. The denominations are groups of believers who have different ideas about how to worship, what constitutes a sacrament, how one should baptize new members, what parts of our faith should be most emphasized, or what happens after we die (e.g., is there such a thing as purgatory? are there different levels of heaven? Christians don t have to identify with any one denomination to be Christian, but their ideas about worship and beliefs tend to draw them in one direction or another. Even congregations that call themselves non-denominational resemble one denomination more than another. (Cont d on next page)

Is it what we profess (say we believe?) Or is it because of the music we use? Or is it because we have communion every Sunday? Or is it because it is close enough to walk to? Or do you have friends who drew you here? Our reason for choosing a particular denomination or congregation is not always important, though it is something to ponder from time to time. The Reformation happened because believers wanted to correct mistakes and wrongs that were happening in the Roman Catholic Church at that time, and the Roman Catholic Church attempted to excommunicate these believers, even burning them at the stake to prevent them from pointing out these errors and calling for reforms. The CHURCH will still be made of sinners, until Christ returns to earth. Therefore, it should always be watching for ways in which it is in error, and looking for how it can be reformed and draw closer to Christ. The Holy Spirit has called us to believe, and made us a part of the one true Christian CHURCH on earth. Because of God s gift of faith, we hope to live our lives on earth as believers are called to live, sharing God s love with others in word and deed, and growing closer to God and God s people. The meeting was opened with devotions by Lisa McClain. Pastor s Report: The funeral of Ann Porath was planned for September 24. Saylor Kramer- Geiger will be baptized on October 7, and Isabella Oblander will receive First Communion on October 21. There will be a brief celebration with cake and coffee after worship on the 21 st. Articles and ideas from Seeds of the Parish were discussed. The upcoming nomination and election of new councilmembers was noted. Committee Reports: Worship and Music: The need for more choir members, especially men, was expressed. The Newberry College Choir will perform at St. Timothy s on October 20 at 7:00p.m. The community will be invited. Using worship setting 10 in the ELW Hymnal will begin Sunday. Education: Confirmation for Jolena Wallace and Bradley Walsh will be on October 28. IGM: Michael Williams will make a presentation about Lutheridge after worship Sunday. Evangelism: Spirit Sunday Funlympics on September 9 was attended by about sixty people. New members were recognized and lunch and games were enjoyed. Auxiliary nations were thanked for providing athletes, flags, and information. (Cont d on next page)

5 Page 5 (Cont d from page 4) Service: More volunteers are needed to help prepare lunch at Food for the Soul. Our congregation is responsible for helping every third Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. as we have done for a number of years, but a new volunteer list is being compiled. Finance: Year to date income vs expenses is +$10,284. Property: October 20 is scheduled as Clean-up Day. A motion passed unanimously to approve $1000 for the removal of bamboo and treatment of the area to eliminate future growth. This was a $50 increase from the motion passed in August. Old Business: The new Policy Manual is ready to be reviewed by Council. The Eucharist Ministry continues, within the Worship and Music Committee, to receive request to provide home communion. New Business: A nominating committee for new council members will be the three retiring council members (Frank Bernhardt, Lisa McClain, and Todd Nord). The meeting was adjourned with the Lord s Prayer. Next meeting: October 11 at 6:30 p.m. Kay Kinard, Council Secretary Spirit Sunday Thanks Funlympics really were fun, and lunch was interesting and delicious. Thanks to everyone who brought food. The US and many other countries were well represented. A special thanks to the kitchen crew: Sandra Cooper, Elva Pitsenbarger, Joan Sartin, Lucy Laufer, and Ann Duckworth. Also appreciated were the many hands helping with the cleanup after the event. The wonderful leaders of our auxiliary organizations did a great job of recruiting athletes, creating flags and presenting facts about their groups. The good sports who contributed most to the fun in Funlympics were the thirty plus athletes. You all deserve gold medals for truly putting spirit in Spirit Sunday. Thanks to Tim Ryan, our announcer, for keeping the events moving and to Todd Studer and Todd Nord, who also was our timer, for setting up the sound systems. Also thanks to everyone who helped round up athletic equipment, especially Rena Nord. Thank you, Evangelism Committee for being brave enough to plan, support, and complete all the tasks that were needed for our Funlympics.
