1 January September H I G H N OT E S Monthly Newsletter of High Street UMC where What s New In 2018 Winter Sermon Series It s an exciting time for us here at High Street United Methodist Church as a new year begins it also brings us some changes. One of those is a new member to our family and staff, Lisa Fultz, she is our new Office Manager. Marcia Lyons, will now be taking on the role of Financial Secretary. We also have new office hours as of January 01, Monday 9:00am-4:00pm Tuesday 9:00am-4:00pm Wednesday 9:00am-1:00pm Spiritual gifts are given to us for the building up of the body of Christ. This sermon series will focus on twelve spiritual gifts to help us develop ourselves and guide us to where we can best serve within and outside the church. Join us as we discover together how we can recognize and use our gifts for God s purposes. This series takes us into lent with seven weeks of worship, starting with our Family and Friends Combined worship service on December 31, 2017-February 11, January 07-Welcoming and Serving-Martha & Mary January 14-Teaching and Mentoring-Apollos of Alexandria January 21-Encouraging and Supporting-Barnabus February 04-Witnessing and Inviting-Philip & Nathanael February 11-Leading and Giving-Joseph Saves His Family Thursday 9:00am-4:00pm Friday 9:00am-4:00pm IN THIS ISSUE Children and Youth Worship page 3 Birthday s and Anniversary s page Ministry Team Leaders page 6 1
2 News & Notes January Leadership Orientation Last year s leadership orientation was beneficial so we are doing it again Saturday, January 6, from 10-2pm in the Dining Hall. It is an opportunity to collectively discuss, plan and mark the calendar for the year s events. We recommend anyone on a ministry team to come, not just the chairs. Lunch will be served. Pastor s Tuesday Bible Study: Into the Word Into the World Every Tuesday at 3:00pm and again at 7:00pm Pastor Steven leads a Bible Study Class Covering Genesis and Exodus in the Old Testament, Luke and Acts in the New Testament. The class meets approximately 90 minutes. There is a Student Study Manual and each week the class prays for one another and members of the community. New students may join at any time. In January we are studying Exodus 3 and 4. The Call of Moses, Exodus Liberation From Bondage, Exodus God Provides, Exodus 20, God Commands, and Exodus God s Justice: in February Ruth Compassion for the Powerless, and Exodus God s Presence in the Sanctuary. We will begin our study of Luke February 20. Please join us in the Commons. We cover the Same Biblical Material in each class session. Show Your Love Weather Update It is that time of year again where there are school, business and even an occasional church closing. All due to the extreme conditions of old man winter. All of us here at High Street United Methodist Church will try our best to always be available for our members and our community. In the case of extreme measures out of our control, we want you to know where you can go to find out if we have to close for any reason. We will post any closings on WHIO, NewsCenter7, ABC 22, FOX 45, and WDTN and they will broadcast any delay or closings that are necessary for us. Please tune in either by watching TV or online for inclement weather closings. Thank you. MOPS / Operation Christmas Child The MOPS Group packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child in November. The boxes had tracking labels so that we could track what country they were sent to. The 21 boxes from High Street went to Rwanda, Burundi and Ghana in Africa. We Pray for all the children that received those boxes, that they will be blessed with Jesus love! Greenbacks for Groceries Please remember the Greenbacks for Groceries jar that sits in the vestibule window sill next to the name badges. Money placed in this collection jar is used to purchase needed items for the Open Hands Free Store. Although our congregation gives both food and material items generously and consistently to the Free Store, there are times, at change of seasons for example, that extra items like macaroni and cheese are needed. Can you imagine the relief of a belly full of warm food when you thought that you would have to go hungry? The weather has changed tremendously the last few weeks with it below zero outside. A warm meal to some may be the only meal they have all day! Give generously during the winter and 2
3 News & Notes January 2018 Children & Youth Worship Children & Youth Worship is each Sunday from 9:30am-10:30am and 11:00am-12:00pm. Our Children and Youth Worship is an hour packed full of music, dance, word, praise and worship. This is a great opportunity to teach and train our children and youth about worship, worshipful attitudes, and the purpose of worship using a variety of styles. Children and Youth are given the opportunity to learn new exciting ways to praise and worship GOD through dance, singing, music, arts, etc. God s Word is presented to the youth weekly in ways that they are able to comprehend. Our goal is to raise our next generation to be worshipers of God, to teach them to experience the Glory of God through worship, and to leave a legacy of worshipers. 9:30 am Children and Youth will meet downstairs in the Carr Room 11:00 am Children and Youth will meet downstairs in the Noah Ark Room Teachers are available and will be listed in the update on Sunday Morning. All children and youth can be picked up by their parents in the commons after service. If you need to pick up your child earlier please go downstairs to pick them up. Thank you. ATTENTION WE NEED NURSERY VOLUNTEERS!! Volunteers are needed in the nursery! We want young families to feel welcome here. Michelle Halbirt works at every service. Safe Sanctuary policy requires two adults with children at all times. If you are able to help at even one service a month, please stop by the nursery and give Michelle your name and contact information. Thank You!! 3
