REPORTER Congratulations to our high school graduates, Colin Wimer and Tanner McEwan. They received their senior blankets from the women s group on May 28th. Pentecost emphasizes the life of the Spiritinfused church disciples in action. The Holy Spirit is still at work, calling, gathering, and empowering followers of Jesus to grow in discipleship. INWARD AND OUTWARD GIFTS The five gifts of discipleship can be divided into two categories: Inward Gifts of Discipleship: MY life is blessed! Live among God s faithful people. Hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper. Outward Gifts of Discipleship: MY life blesses others! Proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed. Serve all people, following the example of Jesus. Strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Copyright 2016 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Pentecost is an ideal season of the church year to emphasize living our baptism and discovering the five gifts of discipleship. Please help us celebrate Pentecost Sunday June 4 by wearing something red (or flame colored like orange). After worship we will serve cake to honor the birthday of the Church---Pentecost.
Summer is a comin! In fact as I write this we are getting some summer weather. The kids and staff (teachers, aides and administrators) are all counting the days until school is out. Our grandson who is a 1st grader can tell us and so can the woman who supervises the after-school care, When I asked her yesterday how many days until school is out she said (with a smile on her face), Not that I m counting, but it s eight! As we go into summer and Pentecost, we celebrate God s Spirit among us. This summer, as in past years, our worship services will be more casual. We will use the piano rather that the organ and the worship leaders will not wear robes. We will also be choosing our favorite hymns for worship again this year. There will be a basket on the table in the narthex for you to place your requests. Let s use this time to strengthen our faith and mission here at St. Luke s through prayer, worship and our offerings. Pastor Mary Kaiser The Men s Breakfast will continue to meet on the 4th Saturday of each month. This month we will meet on June 24th at 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn on 190 just east of Waterview Dr. June 21st is the date the Oromo people celebrate the life of Onesimus Nesib ( ).Onesimus was born into the Oromo people in Ethiopia. He was captured by slave traders and taken from his homeland to Eritrea, where he was bought freed and educated by Swedish missionaries. He translated the Bible into Oromo and eventually returned to his homeland to preach the gospel to the people in their own language. The Dallas Oromo congregation will be celebrating their patron saint on June 18th. We are invited to their fundraising luncheon following their 11:30 worship. Please come and enjoy their ethnic food and coffee. Thank you for your support. It really means a lot for us immigrants in the land of prosperity. Pastor Sileshi and the congregation. 2
The Social Seniors will have a Game Day on Friday, June 9th at the home of Barbara Stiles, 1211 Seminole beginning at 12:15 p.m. Come for fun and fellowship with friends. For more information contact Ursula Peters ( ) or Shirley Brouillette ( ). We look forward to seeing you! President s report I attended the Boys & Girls Club Meeting with Ed Lysen on May 3, I will also attend their Topps Celebration at the Flight Museum later this month. The Club is gearing up for their Summer Programs. The Synod Assembly held in Frisco was a great experience. I became even more aware that we are a Blessed congregation as I met several members of congregations who had less than 30 members worshipping on Sunday. Several congregations have been in the call process for more than a year. We had wonderful music during worship services, with a variety of languages spoken and sung. Martin Luther did several of the devotions. Bishop Gronberg s first Assembly as Bishop was a great learning and worship experience. The 2018 Assembly will be held in Temple, TX in April, start thinking now about attending as St. Luke s Voting Member. Congregations were reminded at the Assembly that it is time to update our Constitution. Denny and Carol Brandt, St Luke s voting members, attended a special workshop to gain additional information. Gail Johnson has agreed to be the Chairperson of the St. Luke s Constitution update Committee, please let her, or someone on the Council know if would be interested in helping out. As most of you know this was my last Assembly as a member of the NT -NL Synod Council. It was a wonderful experience that I highly recommend. However, I was elected to serve on the NT-NL Consultation Committee. The Consultation Committee, has responsibility regarding charges/issues against a congregation or member of a congregation. Fortunately, they meet very rarely. Shirley Sigler Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave. Martin Luther 3
Women of St. Luke s The combined circles will not gather for Bible study this summer. A combined gathering for potluck lunch and fellowship is being considered, details to come later. Looking ahead Mark your calendar Activity Day will be Wednesday, June 7 at 9:00 a.m. Please join us. Leadership Team meeting - August 19 9:00am Devotions Rita Humphrey; refreshments Barbara Tate Spring Luncheon A huge THANK YOU to all who attended the Spring Luncheon and donated to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service! Your generosity allowed us to donate $549 to the fund. Two throws were given to our graduating seniors on Sunday, May 28. Seniors are Tanner McEwan and Colin Wimer. THANK YOU to Shirley Shanahan and Martha Eastwood who purchased materials and made the throws. In July the Women of the ELCA Triennial Convention will be held in Minnesota. Eileen Larsen will attend and represent our group. All Women of St. Luke s are invited to share our purpose, participate in our programs and enjoy our fellowship. All are welcome, please feel free to come and join us. We re having a Give Away. The staff has been working to clean out a lot of stuff that has accumulated in various rooms, closets, etc. over many years. Much is going straight to the dumpster, but we will begin putting things you might be interested in having on a table in the Gathering Area the first week of June. Feel free to peruse the stash and take whatever you want. Keep checking each week because we will keep putting new stuff out during the month of June. Anything left over at the end of the month will disappear. 4
Booksome Ladies On Wednesday, June 21 st, the Booksome Ladies will meet in the Adult Classroom at 9:30 a.m. A Dog s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron is our book for discussion. It is the heartwarming, insightful and often laughout-loud funny and emotional story of a dog s many lives. Surprised to find himself reborn as a lively golden -haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey s search for his new life s meaning leads him into the loving arms of Ethan, age eight, with whom he enjoys many adventures. But this life as a family pet is not the end of Bailey s journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders if he will ever know his real purpose. This novel is a dogs-eye commentary on human relationships and the unique bonds between humans and dogs. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose. Whether you are a dog person or not, YOU ARE WELCOME to enjoy this friendly group. Gentle joy, Martha Eastwood From the Call Committee The Call Committee has completed our church s Ministry Site Profile and presented it to the church council. The council approved it at their May meeting. It was then sent on to the ELCA which will post it their list of current openings. The NT-NL synod will soon send us profiles of pastors who are seeking a call. The candidate pool may be limited due to the fact that there are many open calls around the nation. Candidates can range in experience from just graduating from seminary to 25+ years in a church. They may be male or female, a person of color, may not speak English as their first language, heterosexual or homosexual, disabled, single, married, in a committed relationship, have children or be empty nesters. The more open we are gives us a broader range of available candidates. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to any member of the church council, call committee, or Pastor Mary. We want to address those concerns in a loving, non-judgmental way so that everyone feels heard. Thank you for your prayers for the Call Committee. We are working hard to discern God s guidance in finding our new pastor. 5
