1 REPORTER The first Sunday in November, (5th) is All Saints Day. We will light white candles on the altar in remembrance of those members who died since last year. We will also continue our tradition of remembrance by having white ribbons and markers available in the Gathering Area for you to write the name(s) of deceased love ones you would like to remember. After writing the name, please hang your ribbon or ribbons on the altar rail in the sanctuary. During the month the ribbons will be taken off the rail and made into bows to be put on an Advent tree on the first Sunday in Advent, which is November 27th. (Please keep in mind that November 5 is also the day that daylight savings time ends, so remember to set your clock back one hour.) The Congregational Life Team is planning a congregational luncheon to be held on November 5th. Come and enjoy the food and fellowship with other St. Lukers. On November 12th we will receive new members. If you are interested in joining St. Luke s, please talk to Pastor Mary or call the church office. Commitment Sunday is November 12th. Please bring your pledge cards to worship this Sunday. We will place them in a basket as we go up to the altar for communion. We hope you will prayerfully consider your giving for 2018 and pledge accordingly.
2 While serving as Interim Pastor, I have been going through everything in the Pastor s office so that it will be ready when your new pastor comes. On the shelf I found a book, The Wisdom of Gratitude. As I glanced through it the following caught my eye: Take care of your body. It s the only place you have to live. -Jim Rohn As I read on I found some interesting facts including: Each day your heart creates enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles. Your nose can remember 50,000 scents. Your eyes can distinguish almost 10 million different colors. When you wake up, you are about one centimeter taller than when you go to bed. This year I will especially be giving thanks for the healing my husband, Doug, has experienced this year. What will you be grateful for? God Bless! Pastor Mary Kaiser There will be no Men s Breakfast in November or December because of the holidays. The Richardson Interfaith Alliance (RIA) Thanksgiving Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, November 16, This year's celebration will be held at the Grand Room of the Richardson Civic Center; the hours will be from 6:30pm 8:30pm. The theme for the celebration is "Shelter from the Storm." 2
3 The Social Seniors are planning to attend the 1:30 Productions presentation of, It s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play on Friday December 1st. If you would like to attend this beloved Holiday Classic presented as a radio play, please contact Shirley Brouillette at for further information. She must have your ticket money no later than November 21st in order to reserve a seat for you so please contact her as soon as possible. We will car pool from the church at 12:15 p.m. Give a Gift 2017 is the 60th anniversary of St. Luke s. Our Stewardship Team thought it would be fun if each household gave an extra $60 over and above our regular offering as a special anniversary gift for the church. Sixty dollars for sixty years. If you decide to do this, please mark it on your envelope 60 for 60 You can give this special gift anytime before the end or the year. To my St. Luke's Family, Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you for the love and concern shown to Bernie and I during his lengthy illness. The cards, visits, doughnuts and coffee, the lunches were truly appreciated by both of us. Thank you so much for the love, compassion and caring given to me and to my family during our time of grief. The visits, food, transportation and just plain outpouring of love for all of us has been truly amazing. The hymn says: "They will know we are Christians by our love." That love has been shown to our family many times over and over during these last few years and especially the last couple of months. I thank God for leading us to St. Luke's, you have been a true blessing over the years. Thank you Rita 3

5 Booksome Ladies The Booksome Ladies will meet in the Adult Classroom on Wednesday, November 15 th at 9:30 a.m. Our book for discussion is Shoot Like A Girl, a memoir by Mary Jennings Hegar. She was a U.S. Air Force pilot who served three tours in Afghanistan, flying combat search-and -rescue missions. Hegar was wounded and earned the Purple Heart as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross. Her greatest challenge was in America where her goal was to eliminate the military s Ground Combat Exclusion Policy, which kept females from officially serving in combat roles. This book takes the reader on a dramatic journey through Major Hegar s military career: an inspiring, humorous, and thrilling true story of a brave, high-spirited and unforgettable woman who has spent much of her life ready to sacrifice everything for her country, her fellow man, and her sense of justice. The author is a modern-day heroine in every sense of the word. YOU are welcome to come and enjoy this friendly group of readers. Happy Thanksgiving, Martha Eastwood The following message was handed out at the Richardson Interfaith Alliance meeting. With the continuing violence and racial prejudice throughout our country I am motivated to initiate a group aimed at racial friendship and understanding. This group welcomes people of various backgrounds and races to learn how to engage in conversation about race unity. The aim and hope of these conversations will be to understand one another and develop greater bonds of friendship. The initial gatherings would have one of a six part Public Broadcasting series called "Many Rivers to Cross" followed by conversation. Those interested in this type of initiative please contact Jackie Oswald at jackieo95@gmail.com for further information. If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write. Martin Luther 5
