1 REPORTER Schedule for Holy Week April 9 Palm Sunday, 10 a.m. meet in the Memorial Garden to process into the sanctuary with palms. April 13 Maundy Thursday Worship at 7 p.m. with anointing with oil and absolution, communion and stripping of the altar. April 24 Good Friday Worship at 7 p.m. Join us for this annual Good Friday Tenebrae Service. The North Dallas Trombone Choir will join us with special music. Easter Sunday April 16th Easter Breakfast Breakfast will be served beginning at 8:30 a.m. This will be a fund raiser for the youth so please be generous with your free will offering. April 16th Easter Sunday Worship at 10 a.m. we join our voices in praise and celebration of the resurrection! Remember to bring a flower from your home to help decorate our renewed and resurrected Easter cross. If you forget, we ll have some available for you as you enter the worship service.

2 As I am writing this for the newsletter I realize it has been six months since I began serving as Interim Pastor here at St. Luke's. It has been a busy time and I am certainly enjoying learning to know you as individuals and as a congregation. I am pleased that the Call Committee is doing their work to prepare to interview perspective candidates to serve as Pastor here. Please continue to include in your prayers the Call Committee as well as the person you will eventually call to serve as Pastor. I give thanks for your faithfulness to the good news of Jesus Christ! Mary Kaiser, Interim Pastor The call committee held its first meeting on Monday, March 20th. Over the next few weeks, the committee will complete the Mission Site Profile. This document is given to all of the candidates and describes who we are as a congregation, what is important to us and where we are headed in the coming years. Once the committee completes the Mission Site Profile, we will begin the process of meeting with candidates and discerning whom we will call as our next pastor. As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to members of the committee if you have any questions. The Men s Breakfast will continue to meet on the 4th Saturday of each month. This month we will meet on April 22nd at 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn on 190 just east of Waterview Dr. Wednesday, April 5, 5:30 pm - The Flock will provide the meal for the Lenten Service supper so we need chefs and volunteers. Call Carol if you can help. On Saturday, April 29th, we will head to the Ballpark in Arlington to watch the Rangers vs. the Angels. 3 Dear members of St. Luke s Congregation: I want to thank you for your expressions of support and best wishes following our Annual Meeting in January. You have elected a hardworking Council, committed to serving our congregation. We pledge to listen to each member, insure transparency and focus on what is in the best interest of the congregation. Our first steps to open communication are: Frequent articles in The Reporter Open invitation to bring concerns to Council meetings: The church Council meets on the 2nd Monday of each month, beginning at 7:00 P.M. with devotions in the adult education room. If you have a question or concern that you would like the Council to be aware of, either with or without coming to the meeting put a note in my mailbox. Include your name and or phone number. I will contact you to personally invite you to the meeting and let you know when you will be placed on the agenda. Chances are your question or suggestion may also be shared by another member and you may not be the only one interested in the answer. I m excited about the coming year and I hope you are too. Please keep your Church Council and the Call Committee in your prayers. The Peace of God be with You Always, Shirley Sigler St. Luke s Council President The 2017 NT-NL Synod Assembly will take place April 28 30th. Our voting members are Pastor Mary Kaiser, Denny and Carol Brant. The theme of the assembly is What Does This Mean? What does the Reformation mean for us in the 21st century? The Assembly worship service on Saturday, the 29th is open to the public. It will be held at Preston Meadow Lutheran Church, 6801 Coit Road in Plano beginning at 5 p.m. Bishop Erik Gronberg will be preaching. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. No reservations required. The devotion booklets for April June are available on the table in the narthex. Please feel free to pick one up for your personal use. 3

4 Women of St. Luke s The April Bible study for Mary Ruth and Rebekah circles concludes the winter Reformation anniversary Bible study on Galatians: Christian Faith and Christian Freedom by Kit Kleinhans, a professor at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. This study is For freedom Christ has set us free with theme verses from Galatians 5:1-6:18. This month s lesson may be found on page 24 of the April Gather magazine or may be downloaded at gathermagazine.org. The Leader s guide follows the lesson. APRIL ACTIVITIES April 1 (Saturday): Leadership Team Meeting, 9:00am in the Adult S. S. Classroom April 5 (Wednesday): Activity Day, 9:00am in the Gathering Area. Come work on quilts, layettes, school and health kits for Lutheran World Relief. April 8 (Saturday): 9:00am Sarah Circle meets in the Church Conference Room. Their lesson will be session three of the Gather magazine Bible study Heirs of Promise. Hostess: Brenda Milner, Study Leader: Joy Uhler. April 11 (Tuesday): 10:00am - Mary Ruth Circle will meet at church in the adult classroom. Hostess: Martha Eastwood, Study Leader: Emily Hoffman 1:30pm - Rebekah Circle will meet at church in the adult classroom. Hostess: Carol Rizzo, Study Leader: Rita Humphrey April 19 (Wednesday): Lutheran World Relief Packing Day, 9:00am Many hands make for light work. Join others in packing quilts, layettes, school and health kits. MARK YOUR CALENDAR Spring Luncheon, May 6 (Saturday) at 11:30am. All women of the church are invited to a potluck luncheon (dessert and drinks provided) followed by the lively, fun and entertaining program, Delightful Music. Lev Kardonsky, a Grammy award violinist, and Jerry Stephens, pianist who accompanied the Dallas Symphony Chorus for 29 years will play a variety of musical selections. Mary Ruth Circle is the host. Sign up for the luncheon will be on April 23 & 30. Plan to attend! All women of St. Luke s are invited and encouraged to come. Please feel free to join any of the circles at any time. 4

5 Booksome Ladies On Wednesday, April 26 th, the Booksome Ladies will meet in the Adult Classroom at 9:30 a.m. Our book for discussion is A Man Called Ove by Swedish author Fredrik Backman. This is a funny and charming book about Ove, the grumpiest man you may ever meet. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People think he is bitter, and he thinks himself surrounded by idiots. His well-ordered, solitary world is shaken with the appearance of new neighbors, a chatty young couple and their two boisterous little daughters. As they are moving into the neighborhood, they accidentally flatten Ove s mailbox with their U-Haul. What follows is an irresistible tale of unkempt cats, unlikely friendships, and a community s unexpected reassessment of the one person they thought they had all figured out. This novel about the angry old man next door is a heartwarming exploration of the unreliability of first impressions and a gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it is shared with other people. This book is guaranteed to make you smile! EVERYONE IS WELCOME to come and be a part of this friendly group of readers. Joyous Easter Martha Eastwood Our Old Rugged Cross is again in the sanctuary for the Lenten season. There are slips of paper in a basket on the table in the narthex on which to write a prayer and place it in one of the slots on the cross. This has been a tradition at St. Luke s for about 30 years. On Good Friday the prayers are removed and replaced with black ribbons which are then covered up on Easter Sunday by flowers which each member is invited to add to the cross that morning before the worship service. Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime. Martin Luther 5

Dear friends, Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers, cards and words of concern during my recent knee replacement surgery. My bionic knee is healing well so far.
