1 REPORTER Wednesday night Advent Services will be held on December 6, 13, and 20th at 6 p.m. We will be using Holden Evening Prayer as our service. Come and join us in this quiet evening service. Special Sundays in December December 10 we will have a service of Lessons and Carols with special music by the choir,. December 17th will be our annual Christmas Program featuring both children and adults. The Oromo congregation will join with us in this program. December 24th is both the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve. There will be two services that day. The 10 a.m. service will be the 4th Sunday in Advent and the 7 p.m. service will be the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. Come and enjoy both that day. Cookie Giveaway On December 17th come enjoy the Christmas program and go home with cookies! You are invited to bring cookies to share with fellow members. You are also invited to take home cookies made by fellow members. Note: you do not have to bring cookies to take some home. There will be enough for all to have some. Our Christmas Eve Candlelight service will be at 7 p.m. on December 24th. Come and celebrate the birth of the Christ Child with family and friends at this service.

2 As we move into on the season of Advent I look forward to our time together not only on Sunday mornings, but also on Wednesday evenings as we quietly gather together. This year we will again use "Holden Evening Prayer". For our meditation I will be using thoughts and reflections from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book God Is In the Manger with the following themes: Dec. 6 - Waiting Dec Mystery Dec Redemption Please note that this year we will be gathering at 6 P.M.!! See you in worship. Pastor Mary Kaiser This cross is decorated with bows made from ribbons from All Saints Day. On All Saints Day members wrote the names of deceased loved ones ribbons which were hung on the altar rail during the service of remembrance. The ribbons have been made into bows to decorate the cross which will remain up during the Advent and Christmas season. Thanks to Brenda Milner for hours spent preparing the ribbons for All Saints Sunday and for making them into bows for the Advent cross. 2

3 The Social Seniors are planning to attend the 1:30 Productions presentation of, It s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play on Friday December 1st. If you have made plans to attend this beloved Holiday Classic presented as a radio play, please meet at the church at 12:15 to carpool to the Bathhouse Cultural Center. Give a Gift If you plan to give a special gift of $60 for St. Luke s 60th anniversary, you can still do so this month. At this writing we have received a total of $1260. The December 9th Flock Christmas party celebrates the beginning of when it all started for the Flock. This will begin our 3rd year together as a group. We encourage any person 18 years and older to join for a lot of fun. Please provide Lori Prince or Carol Herrman with your name, phone #, and address if you would like to be notified of the upcoming 2018 events. Everyone is welcome to join our group. The kick-off for the 3rd year will be at Lori s house (1111 Mission Ln, Lantana (near Briarwood Lutheran Retreat Center) at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9th. We will have dinner and a gift exchange. Please bring a wrapped dollar gift for each person who attends and your favorite beverage to drink. So we know how much food to cook please RSVP Lori at or Carol at as soon as you know you are coming. After church brunch will be held on 12/31 Look for fellow Flockers to pick a place for lunch. There will be no Men s Breakfast this in December because of the holidays. 3

4 Women of St. Luke s Circle Bible studies are not held in December; but will resume in January All women of St. Luke s are invited to attend the Christmas Potluck Luncheon and program on December 9 at 11:30am. The program this year is The Colors of Christmas led by Sarah circle. If you are able, please bring a non-dessert dish to share. Desserts will be provided by Sarah Circle. The offering from our Christmas Luncheon will be donated to the Lutheran Disaster Response Fund. Please be sure that checks are made out to Women of St. Luke s. All female members (regardless of age) are invited to attend and bring a friend. Everyone is wished a blessed and safe Christmas season and a healthy New Year! We would like to thank our St. Luke s family for all the support we have had the past few years during the illness of our dear Ruthie. Thanks also to the special people that helped with the reception after her memorial service. Finally, thanks to Pastor Mary for her very special help in a difficult time. 5 Booksome Ladies The Booksome Ladies will meet in the Adult Classroom at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20 th. Our book for discussion is A Quilt for Christmas by wellknown author, Sandra Dallas. Set in 1864, it is the story of Eliza Spooner and her two children when her husband Will joins the Kansas Volunteers to fight the Confederates, leaving her in charge of family, home and land. Eliza is confident that her husband will return safely from the war, and she passes the months making a special quilt to keep him warm during his winter in the army. When the unthinkable happens, Eliza takes in a woman and child who have been left alone and vulnerable by the war. She finds friendship and comfort among the women of her quilting group. When she is asked to help hide an escaped slave, she must decide what is right and who she can depend on for help. The historical detail of this novel, its memorable characters, and its unexpected happenings make A Quilt for Christmas an outstanding story of the bonds of family, friendship, and courage. It is as heartwarming as a homemade quilt. After our book discussion, we will go to the Chocolate Angel for lunch at 11:30 Congratulations to Ashley Sallee who was recently adopted by her grandfather, Dave Sallee. Congratulations to Anders Nelson who is graduating from UTD on December 15th. Good news from heaven the angels bring, glad tidings to the earth they sing.
