3 The liturgical color for the season of Pentecost is green. Green is the color of vegetation, living things and the promise of new life. It is used for the Seasons of Epiphany and Pentecost. As we speak of Pentecost Sunday as the birth of the Church, so the lengthy Pentecost season reflects the life and growth of the Church. 4 APPRECIATION & FAREWELL BRUNCH FOR PASTOR BEV WOLFF Today is Pastor Bev s last Sunday at Bethany. We ve been blessed through her service, good messages, friendship, & encouragement. After worship we will join in fellowship for an egg-bake brunch and card reception to say thank you and farewell. All are welcome please come to the Dining Room on the lower level and join us for brunch! SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR AGES PRESCHOOL GRADE 8 Children ages 3 years-grade 8 are encouraged to attend Sunday School after worship. Preschoolers 3-4 years gather in their room upstairs (Room 9). Kinderkids through grade 6 gather for fellowship and music in the parlor today (please note change from normal location). Dining Room downstairs. Grades 7-8 meet in their room in the east wing downstairs. 5 Today kicks off the October food drive for the UDMO food pantry. Bring food and hygiene items to Bethany any time throughout the week of October We will deliver them to the pantry. Thanks to all who support this ministry with in-kind donations! Your gifts really do make a difference! The Bethany Book Study Group will be discussing their latest read Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward a book of thought-provoking essays and poems about race on Monday, October 10 at 7pm in the church parlor. Be on the look out for their next book, to be announced soon. Evening music rehearsals are in session. See the calendar for times. Weeknight Music, Choir, Bell Choir, Uke Group all are opportunities to share in the music ministry at Bethany. Consider joining a music group! Ministry Teams meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm this month on October 11, to coordinate and plan the mission and ministry activities of Bethany. Committees typically get together at 6pm to collaborate before the meeting. Ministry Team leaders, be sure to let your committee members know when and where you are meeting! Are you not serving on a committee but would like to become involved? There is a place for you! To find out more, contact Francis Hiemstra at Wednesday afternoon Bible Adventure classes for third and fourth graders have started and will continue every Wednesday in October ( ). Classes are held in the parlor & begin at 4:30pm. Kids can come earlier at 4pm for a snack and game before class begins. If it is difficult for you get your child here, the bus stops at Bethany, but you need to contact Julie Nemmers in the school transportation department at to make drop-off arrangements. Looking forward to Bible adventures with the kids! The Gathering Community Meal at Bethany begins the season this week with their first meal being served from 5-6pm on Thursday, October 13. Many thanks to those who have volunteered to make a pan of apple crisp for the supper! Another way to help is by serving in the kitchen/dining room that evening. If you would like to do this, come at 4:40pm on Thursday, October 13. Thanks for helping! The Loving Spencer project for October is Pastor Appreciation The work of a pastor often is underappreciated. It's much, much more than just Sunday morning. October is Pastor Appreciation Month, and so for this month's project we want to give honor where honor is due and be intentional about letting our pastors know that they are truly appreciated. See the October Herald for some creative ideas. Bethany Lutheran Church will host the Sweet Stop on Halloween. This is a fun community outreach event. Folks are needed to help run treat stations and donations of wrapped candy are needed. Please consider helping out. Be on the lookout for a display with more information coming soon!

6 The November worship volunteer sign-up is at the Welcome Center! It has been determined that we will return to two services in November when Pastor Jen comes to Bethany. This means more volunteers will be needed. Please look over the sheet and sign up to help where you are able. Thanks! Bethany s Social Ministries team invites everyone to help warm the heart of a child in the foster care system, blanketing them in faith and covering them with love through the support their year-end outreach project Blanketed in Faith. Donations of fleece in will be accepted in October and November, tied into blankets in December and then donated to Lutheran Social Services and Iowa Kids Net for children in foster care. YOU can help! Purchase fleece, pattern or solid, and bring it to church. (See collection basket at the Welcome Center). Or give a monetary donation marked for fleece blankets, and Social Ministries will purchase the fleece for you. Then, plan to come to the blanket-tying social that will be held at the church on December 1. See the October Bethany Herald and watch the announcements for more information. Bethany s Director of Music, Stephen Baker, has announced an upcoming series of Saturday evening (7pm) recitals on the concert grand. Free-will offerings will be taken, with proceeds to benefit local charities and Bethany missions. The first recital, set for Saturday, November 5, will feature the piano music of George Shearing (and others) with proceeds benefiting the Blanketed in Faith project. The next two will be by request recitals in other words selections will be up to you. Bribes (in the form of donations to the local charities the recitals are supporting) are encouraged and will help to ensure that your request is chosen. Additionally, early submission may help guarantee that your selection is chosen. Request forms are available at the Welcome Center. For full details see article in the October Bethany Herald. The Iowa Child Advocacy Board is looking for 2 individuals to serve on the local (Clay) Foster Care Review Board. This board meets every other month (at Bethany Lutheran Church) to review children in Clay and O Brien County who are in Foster Care. Interested individuals must pass a background check and complete 8 hours of preservice training. Upon completion, they will be sworn in by the local Juvenile Judge. Interested individuals, please contact Melissa Loehr at melissa.loehr@dia.iowa.gov or The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for advocates! A CASA is a trained community volunteer assigned by a judge to represent the best interest of a child who has been abused and neglected. The CASA visits the child monthly and maintains contact with all involved in the case. CASA s are required to regularly submit reports to the court describing how court orders are being followed and offering recommendations.
