Hanson In this past year we celebrated St. Mark s 75th anniversary. We gave thanks to God for his faithful guidance of this congrega on. We gave thanks to all those who have called St. Mark s their home church and who shared in its life and ministries. We received the grateful gi s from many members that we have put to use in making our church more accessible and in reaching out to those in need. Church leaders tell us that a congrega on must reinvent itself every genera on, about 25 years or so, if it is to remain viable and in mission and St. Mark s has done that. The first genera on (1939 to 1964) were builders. They took the risk of star ng a congrega on in the midst of the Great Depression and built a new church on Hendricks Avenue and when they could, added Sunday school rooms for the growing congrega on. The second genera on (1964 to 1990) saw social needs in the neighborhood and Jacksonville area and developed ministries to address them. With the help of many St. Mark s members, Lutheran Social Service of NE Florida, food shelves, and St. Mark s Ark were started and their work con nues. As the congrega on grew, there was a need for an expanded worship space. The third genera on (1990 to 2014) has been a period of readjustment A music suite, remodeled offices, and fellowship hall were added and became important parts in the life of this congrega on. Many Meals Together, Oktoberfests, and pot-lucks were enjoyed. The music ministries grew. This third genera on was also a me of transi on. In what seemed like a quick succession, Pastors Trexler, Baines, Scholl, Wind, Dow, Peacock, interim pastors Keys, Reeb, Reiter and Winter, and I have served as temporary shepherds to this strong flock that has always known where it was going. The fourth genera on (2014 to 2039) has just set out on its part of this marathon relay God has set before us. What will be our legacy? What ministries will mark our me? Already I have seen the budding of new life in this congrega on two recent bap sms and a third just around the corner. There is a growing excitement about jus ce ministries and serving homeless families. There is an openness to mee ng people and to our place as a welcoming and vibrant congrega on in the heart of a major American city. We are challenged by the Holy Spirit to take up the cross of Christ and move out into God s world with boldness and love. Each of us have a por on to give in thanks to God and in thanks to the people who have gone before us. 1
A Message from The Ark The Ark is going to miss Bill. Bill has taken the Santa and graduation pictures for many years. This was done with love and at no charge to the Ark. He only asked that we pay for his ink. I am pretty sure that the amount that he asked us to cover didn t come close to the actual cost. Bill also donated art to our Spring program, paid for families to attend the Spring program, made snacks for VBS, and made pancakes for the Shrove Tuesday breakfast. As I walked from room to room, informing the staff of Bill s passing, they each had something nice to say about our friend. Remarks were made about what a kind, gentleman he was. One of our staff said, with tears in her eyes, This church is going to miss him. Another mentioned the gleam in his eyes when he looked at Jane. We are going to miss Bill Daugherty in so many ways, we couldn t possibly count them all. Tony's Musical Notes Our cantata this year is Meine Seel erhebt den Herren, BWV No. 10. Wri en for the Feast of the Visita on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is a se ng of the Magnificat that will be perfect for ushering us into Advent in the following week. The orchestra will be comprised of professional instrumentalists and this work will be sung within the context of the Lutheran Vespers service, also called Evening Prayer. Bach Vespers has been a part of St. Mark s worship life since 1990 when the first cantata was sung under the direc on of Jim Rindelaub who was St. Mark's Cantor We are happy to carry on this great tradi on of presen ng music by one of the Lutheran Church's best-loved composers in a worship service. Financial support from St. Mark s members has always been an important piece of this ministry. Music must be purchased and instrumentalists and soloists must be hired to supplement volunteer singers and members of the Fes val Choir. Your generous contribu ons are very much appreciated. Gi s may be given as memorials. Do you know someone who would like to sing with us? Please give them a copy of this ar cle so they will have the rehearsal schedule and will know how to contact me. The rehearsal and service schedule follows: Saturday Nov.1, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Saturday Nov. 8, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Saturday Nov. 15, 10 :00 AM - 12:00 PM Saturday Nov. 22, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (This is our dress rehearsal with the orchestra.) The service is on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 6:00 PM. Please send an message to vespers@comcast.net to receive a registra on form. 2
September 2014 Men In Mission We held our monthly Men in Mission on September 6th. Our morning started with a prayer and breakfast. The breakfast was very good, but missing an ingredient - Bill Daugherty. We will miss his smiling face and cheerful attitude that always brightened the early mornings. Fourteen folks attended and we hoped to get some outside work done, but the rains kept our efforts contained indoors. As part of our monthly workday, we changed A/C filters, replaced light bulbs and ballasts, cleaned the Fellowship Hall floor with the "Zamboni", did some touch up painting, and replaced some latches in restroom stalls. Attendees for Men in Mission: Ken Sohacki, Robert & Aaron Brown, Jane Daugherty, Fred and Eileen Schaible, Dave Swan, Russ Snyder, Mike Swart, Larry Tallman, Eric and Ellen Olson, and Pastor Tom. Thanks to all who of you that help in the maintenance of our church property. The next Men in Mission will be held on October 4th. Please plan to attend if you are able. As always we welcome men, women and youth. Property Other projects completed this month: The A/C unit that feeds the Library and the Kitchen was leaking again. This unit was repaired last year and because of its age it was decided that we should replace it. The project included increasing the capacity of the unit so that it would do a better job of cooling the Kitchen. Added ducting and a separate thermostat was added in the kitchen and the increased cooling has been noticeable. Several small leaks were repaired on the Ark buildings. A couple of valleys needed flashing and shingles and the flashing and mortar was sealed around the leaking window areas on the roof windows. Thanks to all of you for your physical and spiritual support for this group. God's work, Our hands, Bernie, Ken and the Property Committee We hold our Contemporary/Casual Worship Services every 1 st and 3 rd Saturday of each month. Our October services will take place Saturday, October 4 th & 18 th at 5:30 PM in the Nave. Please join us and bring a friend. 3
THE STEWING POT --- September As you read this we are entering the month of September. This year is winding down quickly. Shortly there will be talk of Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. My focus today is on the word thanksgiving. Not just the holiday but as a daily occurrence. As Christians we know that all that we have is a blessing from God. We are grateful for what is provided. How may we express our thankfulness to God for all that has been provided to us? Our thankful response may include our time, talents and treasures. During September you will receive an RSVP Financial Commitment Form. Please return the form to the altar during the services on September 28, Your response will permit church leaders to plan for the coming year and will also allow for support of activities such as Family Promise, musical programs and the sharing of the life saving news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Respond in support of the mission of Saint Mark s. Stand up and be counted. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! -Uncle Stew Please contact Rose Tallman at should you have any questions about your financial commitment. A Message from KITCHEN ALERT Your Council Your kitchen has a new, clean appearance. All the pots and pans have been scrubbed and President now are stacked on their new plastic mat. The shelves on the back wall have all been washed and everything placed in containers with labels. Anything that didn't have a lid has been covered in plastic. All the dishcloths and drying towels are in labeled drawers underneath the knife cabinet. The "desk" area has been cleaned and organized. The pantry is always a work in progress as supplies are used and replaced, and for new events scheduled for the future. Any organization that needs space for storage in the pantry, please see Leslie Allen and you will be assigned a designated area. The large steamer, the commercial floor mixer, the meat slicer and other items were given to the culinary school at Clara White Mission for their use. There is a more user friendly microwave available as well. PLEASE, and this is all we ask, when you use items please wash, dry, and put them back where you found them. Do not leave anything on the sink area to air dry. When you use dishcloths and towels, please take them home, wash them, bring them back, and put them where they belong. Do not leave items on top of the washer because they get mixed up with the Ark laundry. With all of us working together we can keep the kitchen area clean. Thanks to all who helped! Your Fellowship Ministry Team 4
THE DRIP LINE- The next blood drive at Saint Mark s will occur on October 5, 2014 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Please plan to attend and help those in need of blood. Thank you and see you on the bus next time! Come be a quiet hero. Jan LION'S PRIDE Come and join us on Friday, October 10, We will meet in Hart Hall at 12:00 noon. St. Mark s will join other volunteers from the Jacksonville area Saturday, October 11 th, at the Nourishment Network (formerly Second Harvest Food Bank), 1502 Jessie Street (32206) from 9:00 A.M. to Noon for a fall workday. Please RSVP Karl Stupski, Volunteer Coordinator at by Tuesday evening October 7 th, so we can provide the Food Bank with an idea of our participation. During VBS, we challenged the children to do "Random Acts of Kindness" or good deeds to show Jesus' love. The monetary rewards they earned during the week were gathered in a treasure chest to exemplify our Treasure Island theme. A total of $ was raised during the week and at the VBS musical Three Trees on Saturday evening. The youth were able to add $600 raised for their mission trip in June. The combined efforts allow St. Mark s to send a check to Heartline Ministries in the amount of $1, for more Haiti assistance! You may contact Rachel Mumford or Joyce Wertz for more information. Notes of thanks were recently received from the following: To the Congregation of St Marks, Every unit of blood donated is greatly appreciated. I tried to donate blood several times in my lifetime but, for one reason or another, I was unable to do so. Now I am one of many who benefits from those who generously donate. Please know I am very grateful and thankful to each and every one of you. May the peace of the Lord be with you. Nicki Hassell 5
Dear St. Mark s friends and family, I feel both a deep sense of loss and abundantly grateful all at the same time. Bill was a presence even around the house. His laughter, joking, and love filled our home. He helped me keep my emotional balance, and I am unsure how I will do without him. And yet, at the same time, I feel buoyed up by your extravagant love and concern for me. I cannot even begin to articulate all the expressions of love toward me. It has been overwhelming. He would be so pleased. I am grateful for his peaceful passing. Bill had a lot of tragedy in his life, and yet he was still able to be joyful. He was a wonderful role model for me as well as a loyal partner and companion. May he rest in peace, and may you all be blessed for your kindness toward me. God s Peace, Jane Daugherty Thank you to everyone who worked on the 75th anniversary committee. The $1, donation to the Ark s Scholarship Fund will be used wisely. You have helped to shape the lives of some VILP s (Very Important Little People.) -Patrice Thank you so much to everyone who participated in God s Work. Our Hands. Sunday on September 7, The food and fellowship at the potluck dinner was wonderful. It was a pleasure for St. Mark s to present checks to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, The Blood Alliance, United Community Outreach Ministries (UCOM), St. Mark s Ark Scholarship Fund, St. Mark s Bach Vespers, and Lutheran Braille Workers. More than fifty hygiene kits were assembled for UCOM s clients, activity bags were assembled for children at UF Health/Shands, water bottles were given out to walkers and joggers in front of the church, volunteers sorted food at UCOM, and plants were planted and landscaped at Spring Park Elementary School. Due to rain, two of our projects had to be rescheduled picking up trash along Hendricks Avenue and Emerson Street, as well as yard clean up at the home of one of our shut-in members. We are blessed to have a congregation that cares about it s community and wants to make a difference. We are already looking forward to planning next year s God s Work. Our Hands. Sunday ~ Your Send Team St. Mark s New Logo The public face of a congregation is important to encourage people to stop and take a look at the heart of the congregation. The care we give to our building, to our worship, and to our publications all go hand-in-hand in presenting who we are as a congregation. The old logo or brandmark used at St. Mark's has served well for many years. It is a strong statement of our focus on the cross of Christ, Word, and sacrament. It also has the lion symbol of our namesake, St. Mark the Evangelist. But times change. The old logo (at right) is drawn in the coat-of-arms style and uses traditional church symbols that today are unfamiliar to many people. The symbols and the overall design create a dated and confusing image not the kind of image we wish to project of St. Mark s. 6 Continued on page 7
The colors With this new logo, we began with a four-quadrant cross of the brickwork and wood crosses behind our altar. Each of these are squares with the corners "removed" Both crosses are based on the traditional Quadrate cross a cross of equal arms with a square at the intersection. The four strong quadrants remind us of the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John going out to the four corners of the world. It also signifies that through the cross and resurrection, Christ has saved the whole world. Blue is the color of the upper left quadrant. It is the church s color for Baptism and Advent. It represents new life and the anticipation of the coming of the Messiah at Bethlehem and at the end of time. It is also symbolic of water. Just as we need water to live, we receive new life through the water of our baptism into Christ. Green is used for the other three quadrants (the light grey in the image above). It is the church s color of Epiphany and the Sundays after Pentecost. Green represents the coming of Christ into the world (Epiphany) and the nearness of the kingdom of God in Jesus preaching and healing on the grassy meadows of Galilee (the season of Pentecost). Both seasons emphasize extending the kingdom of God through mission, witness, and service. Together, the blue and green represent life, growth, hope and outreach characteristics of the mission and vision of St. Mark s Lutheran Church. The tilted blue quadrant represents excitement, movement, and life. It is moving in and moving out at the same time. The tilt symbolizes that we are a lively congregation where people are received into the body of Christ through baptism and we are sent out into the world to baptize, teach, and make disciples of all nations as Jesus calls us to do in Matthew 28. The typeface The typeface used for the church s name is Skia (sample at left). It is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Apple Computer in It is called "humanist" because Carter drew his inspiration from 1st century Greek handwritten manuscripts such as those of the early manuscripts of the New Testament and other handwritten documents written before printing presses. While Skia is strongly rooted in historical, handwritten manuscripts, it has a very clean and technical look that is similar to post-modern typefaces, such as Helvetica and Optima. Skia shows that while our roots are sunk deeply into scripture and the Word of God, we are open, concerned with the gifts and needs of people, and contemporary. We are traditional but we are not stuffy or rigid. We understand that God continues to bless his people with new ways to serve and new ways to bring praise and glory to God. What s next? The Congregation Council at its June meeting overwhelmingly liked and approved the change to this new brandmark or logo for St. Mark s. It s first use will be on official letterhead, signage, business cards for staff, and worship bulletins. As we update the Messenger newsletter and the weekly Lion s Roar, the logo will be incorporated there as well. Our goal is to have a fresh, modern, and unified look to all of our publications. For now, we will keep the familiar coat-of-arms logo for the St. Mark s polo shirts and coffee mugs. 7
