Thomas Hanson Phone: x 14 Cell: hansonts@comcast.net Dir. of Ministry Administration and Volunteers: Wendi Orr Phone: StMarksAdmin@ StMark.comcastbiz.net Director of Music Ministry: Tony Cruz Phone: x 21 vespers@comcast.net St Mark's Ark Director: Patrice Roux-Neal Phone: My St. Mark s Family, Setting goals: Focus on Stewardship year-round Support and encourage each other, one with another Energize our outreach with the Ark Build programs and commitment among members to these programs which build up the Body of Christ in the areas of Ministry to Children, Youth, and Family as well as Congregational Fellowship These sound great! Did you know these were the goals set by the Council back in 2008! They are familiar, aren t they? Your 2012 council held the annual retreat last month. The resulting goals look very much like those above: Re-energize the relationship with the Ark Re-energize the volunteer program Re-energize the congregation with ministry programs, stewardship, and financial awareness We also included: Increase membership by 35 new members in 2012 Improve communication within the congregation Achieve financial stability, presenting a balanced budget for 2013 and increasing the Operating Reserve to $25k Build a talent pool from within the congregation Some of these are ambitious (membership growth, financial stability), but many are all too recognizable. While your councils of 2012, 2008, and those in between, have every good intention of accomplishing these goals, they cannot be successful without the help of the entire congregation. For example, we are forming a committee to examine the relationship between the Ark and the rest of St. Mark s. The group will review the documentation establishing the Ark as an outreach of the church, as well as the facility usage and activities that offer opportunities for fellowship and worship with Ark families. If you are contacted to help this committee, please prayerfully consider this opportunity. StMarksArk@ StMark.comcastbiz.net 1 Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 Actually, if you are contacted to help with any of these efforts, please consider being a part of St. Mark s success. Better yet, don t wait to be contacted. 3 Tony's Musical Notes Marking the End of Lent: Holy Week and the Three Days For the last several years we have observed a devotional practice called The Living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. This year we will hold the service on March 30 th, the Friday before Passion Sunday. The service is based on a tradition dating to the Middle Ages. Christians could not easily make a trip to Jerusalem to walk the path Jesus walked in his final hours, so artistic representations were set up around and within churches allowing people to move from station to station where they heard readings, said prayers, and sang hymns. Many people observe this practice during Fridays in Lent. With the Living Stations of the Cross, we present Jesus final hours in a different way - through tableau and music. The readings and prayers are based on a service written by the Reverend Dr. Kathryn B. Baines who served as Assistant Pastor at St. Mark s Passion Sunday or Palm Sunday is on April 1 st. We recall the triumphal entry into Jerusalem and hear the passion narrative of Jesus suffering. Music by the Festival Choir. Our Maundy Thursday service is at 7:00 p.m. which centers around the themes of Jesus commandment that we love one another, and the institution of the Lord s supper. The service ends with the stripping of the altar, a sign of Jesus abandonment by his followers. For the last several years, we have not observed a Good Friday service except during the day; but, did you know that unless you come to a Good Friday service, you will never hear John s narrative of the passion read in worship? John s gospel has a...royal motif: Jesus, the accused criminal and blasphemer, seems to put the government and the legal and religious authorities on trial. (Worship Guidebook for Lent and the Three Days, Augsburg Fortress.) Martin Luther said John s Gospel is the one, fine, true, and chief gospel, and is far, far to be preferred over the other three and placed high above them. (Worship Guidebook for Lent...) In the bidding prayer for this service, we pray for those preparing for baptism, the Jewish people, and many others. The solemn reproaches (newly edited for ELW) allow us to hear Christ lamenting, O my people, O my church, what more could I have done for you? Please note that this service is much shorter than Good Friday services from days past. We call the day good because it calls us not to deep mourning, but reminds us that God offers the world new life. This service is at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. with music by the Festival Choir. Many people are frightened of the Easter Vigil service...and I don t really know why. There is no other service on the calendar that more clearly shows how God has loved and preserved his people since the very day of creation! St. Augustine called it the mother of all holy vigils...the whole world is awake and watchful. (Worship Guidebook for Lent and the Three Days...) At St. Mark s we vary the readings from year to year and we vary the way in which we hear them. Some are accompanied by music, read by a choir, interpreted through artwork. Last year, our member Diane Cohen brought a friend to this service, a non-lutheran, who was moved to tears several times by these familiar stories. Finally, the candles are lit, the organ swells, and bells are rung to announce the gospel reading. The St. Mark s Ringers and the Festival Choir will present and lead music. Our Lenten journey is a long one with significant events at every turn. Come and see! 3

A Message from The Ark Ark Sunday was February twelfth. We had thirty-seven visitors (kids and their grown-ups) come to church and Sunday School classes. There were children in Sunday School. The lesson was on Jonah. The children also had a couple of art activities that related to the story. I showed up in time for snack. It was so refreshing to see Jenny, Rosemary and Joyce in their element, sharing God s love with our children. After Sunday School was over, Hannah said, I had fun! If you were in the eleven o clock service, you saw how cute our children were. The Ark children sang two songs, lead by Mr. Tony. He has done such a good job with the Ark children. Tony will be missed by them. He is a rock star in their eyes. Pastor and Chuck also did children s time. They learned that we should love those who are not receiving love. This is a good lesson for us all. Our kids were wonderful and sat so nicely for all but one part of the service. Mr. Tony began to play something upbeat and fun during the offering. Several of the girls began to dance. It was adorable. They feel the spirit in ways that we adults do not. Oh, to be young again. If you would like to see how cute our Ark kids are, join us for the Annual Spring Program, April 27 th. Volunteer, have dinner, or sponsor someone. It is a lovely evening that supports our mission. 5 Ark Sunday Sunday, February 12, 2012 The purest praise given by the children of the Ark! Lessons and learning in Sunday School Easter Lilies Coming Soon Order forms will soon be available in the Roar and on the table in the narthex. The deadline for ordering will be Wednesday, March 28th. How Can We Welcome Worship Guests Warmly? Follow the Rule of Three The Invite Team has a request for ALL Members: Research shows that guests/visitors typically leave the Church building within 3 MINUTES after the service. We encourage each member to follow the "Rule of Three" by devoting the First Three Minutes after the benediction to speaking with those that you don't know before speaking to family and friends. Let's try this! 5

From the Treasurer & Finance Committee Chair: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last month our Comptroller "closed the books" on 2011 and I d like to share with you a financial recap of last year. Up front Summary: Saint Mark s ended 2011 with nearly $84,000 in expenses over income for the combined General Operating Fund and the Building/Mortgage Fund. St. Mark s Council and Finance Team were aware of the probability of more expenses than income and we were able to support our congregation s mission, personnel, mortgage and facility requirements with funds from the General Operating Fund reserve, augmented by $35,000 in undesignated bequests and $12,500 from the Misc Designated Gifts account. The Bldg/Mortgage fund continued to augment monthly shortfalls with its reserve funds totaling just over $23,500 for As for expenses St. Mark's spent nearly $9,000 less than budgeted. Compared to 2010, St. Mark's spent approximately $14,000 less, but also took in approximately $77,000 less. St. Mark's ended 2011 with $1,273 in the General Operating Fund reserve, $17,921 in the Bldg/Mortgage fund reserve and $19,075 in the Capital Replacement Fund reserve. Saint Mark s began 2011 with an approved spending authorization for the General Operating Fund of $391,810 and $86,340 for the Building/Mortgage Fund. This was a $4,943 decrease over the approved General Operating Fund authorization from Based on a recommendation from our interim Pastor, supported by Finance Committee and Council, both the General Operating Fund and Building/Mortgage Fund projected income were calculated using a "faith" based approach for income, which assumed necessary income to equal projected expenses and thereby incur no budget deficit. Expenses for 2011 were very carefully examined and were considered absolutely necessary to support our internal and external mission requirements, staff salaries and facility maintenance, contract and utility costs. Pastor Hanson, along with Council and Finance Committee were hopeful that increased commitment to the missions of St. Mark's by our congregation would meet our expenses. Regrettably, while expenses remained very close to our 2011 budget estimate ($8,815 less than budget), 2011 income fell short of budget by $68,975 for the General Operating Fund and $23,526 for the Bldg/Mortgage Fund. The deficit spending necessary to meet requirements rapidly depleted our General Operating Fund reserve of $4,824 at the beginning of the year and we were forced to supplement our General Operating Fund reserve seven times throughout 2011 with funds from undesignated bequests totaling $35,000 and funds from our Misc Designated Gifts fund of $12,500. Without the ability to utilize these two funds, St. Mark's would have been forced to enact severe expense cuts and/or use funds from our dedicated accounts. We ended 2011 with $1,273 remaining in our General Operating Fund reserve. Although no funding had to be transferred to augment the Mortgage/Building Fund due to sufficient reserve levels, expenses over income depleted the reserve by $23,703 or over 50%. St. Mark's monthly mortgage payment is $7,195. The Capital Replacement Fund was increased by General Operating Funds by $500/month for a total of $6,000 and by a Foundation grant of $2,318. The only major expenses from Capital Replacement Fund were approximately $5,500 for Council approved habitability improvements to the parsonage as a result of redesignation from the former Spiritual Enrichment Center. 6 Continued on page 7

Continued from page 6 Throughout 2011, expenses were held at or below budget amounts by our Ministry teams (Invite, Nourish, Celebrate and Send) and our Property team. The fact that our Ministry and Property teams were able to keep expenses below budget by nearly $9K while still maintaining our robust level of mission support to our community and to our Synod, and doing a great job of maintaining our church facilities is a true example of God's love in action by each and every person serving on all our teams, many of whom not only gave of their time but also generously gave of their personal funds. As we continue into 2012, I ask you all to prayerfully consider your ability to support God s mission at St. Mark s, and to continue to pray for the growth of the ministries at St. Mark s. These ministries support our Lord s great command to spread His words of grace, forgiveness and salvation to our congregation and our local and worldwide community. Our Finance Team, Comptroller and Financial Secretary are always willing to discuss the finances of St. Mark's with our St. Mark's family. Please do not hesitate to call or me or see me after church if you'd like to know more about how your gifts to St. Mark's are allocated. A copy of the monthly financial report and last month's Finance Committee meetings are available on the bulletin board in hallway leading from the Fellowship Hall to Hart Hall or you can me (cdrcoach@yahoo.com) and I'll be happy to send you an electronic copy. 9 THE STEWING POT--- MARCH 2012 The Sermon on the Mount is found in Matthew 5:1-12. These words are also called The Beatitudes. In the Old Testament the Ten Commandments are a list from God of Shall Not s. The Sermon on the Mount from Jesus provides a list of Thou Shalt s for us today. A number of years ago the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine in Jacksonville, Florida unveiled a portrayal of Jesus thoughts for each of us about the Sermon on the Mount. The sayings were called the BE- Attitudes. Each line starts with the word BE: Be Aware of your dependence on God. Be Patient and humble of heart. Be Givers of mercy. Be Single-hearted, ever mindful of eternity. Be Anxious to do what is right and long for justice. Be Workers for peace. Be Willing to suffer for me. Be Willing to endure persecution and slander because of my name. Be Glad and rejoice for your reward is great in heaven. A thought: What you are is God s gift to you. What you do with yourself is your gift to God. Remember to practice kindness! The stand was made by hand by Karen's late husband, Bruce. We are so grateful for the thoughtful donation. Now we can all enjoy the beautiful craftsmanship. Notes of Thanks Were Received From the Following: WELCA would like to thank all the members of St. Mark's for their generous contribution of Personal Health Kits for the Lutheran World Relief Project. We collected 85 Kits and they are on their way to the LWR warehouse for distribution as needed. When natural disaster strikes or political conflict flares, families often have little chance to gather their belongings before fleeing the danger. The simple items included in the Personal Health Kit allow them to wash away the dirt & sweat, with the fresh scent of soap & the softness of a towel as reminders of someone's care & concern for them in their plight. 11 Dear St. Mark's, We thank you for your many prayers, calls, cards, flowers and Memorials given in Smed's name. Our family appreciates everyone involved in Smed's memorial service; Tony's wonderful music, Pastor Hanson's uplifting message and our church family and friends for attending the service. Also, we'd like to thank the women of the church for the delicious food served at the reception. We appreciate everything that was done to honor Smed's life and memory. God's Blessings to All, Jean Henderson and Family
