1 Advanced Placement European History Summer Assignment Weight: Test Grade Due Date: Wednesday, September 3 rd 1 Introduction Welcome to AP European History! This summer you will be reading Danubia: A Personal History of Habsburg Europe (ISBN ) by Simon Winder. Danubia discusses the history of Eastern Europe by following the important events surrounding the most prominent ruling family of the Holy Roman Empire: the Habsburgs. Winder s work will give you an in-depth picture of the complexities of the region and an alternate view of the supposedly classy and civilized Europeans. The Assignment Using evidence from Danubia, compose a 1,000 word essay that answers ONE of the following questions. Essays should be in Times New Roman 12 point font, double-spaced, with 1 margins. You will submit your paper electronically through google drive. We will cover google drive procedures on the first day of class. Keep in mind that the best essays will take a nuanced approach that incorporates the political and social evolution of the Habsburg Empire. You will be graded on your ability to write a coherent essay that answers your chosen question by using evidence from throughout the book. The rubric is posted below. 1. How did Ottoman influence in Eastern Europe impact the Habsburg Empire and European History? 2. How did the religious, linguistic, and ethnic diversity of Central Europe strengthen or weaken the Habsburg Empire? 3. How did Habsburg policies contribute to the historical and immediate causes of nationalist movements in Central Europe? 4. Should the Habsburgs be characterized as liberal or conservative rulers? Discuss the causes that led different Emperors to adopt opposing ideologies at different points within the Holy Roman Empire. 5. How has the Habsburg s status as a predominately land-locked empire impacted their diplomatic relationships and internal policies? Point Value Description 5 Introduction 5 Thesis Statement Use of Specific Evidence from 20 Danubia to Support Thesis Comprehensiveness of Historical 15 Evidence 10 Organization and Transitions 5 Conclusion 10 (Modified) MLA Citations 10 Grammar and Spelling 5 1,000 Words Minimum 2 Times New Roman 2 12 Point Font 2 1 Margins 2 Honor Code 1 This due date is meant to accommodate students who switch into the class once the school year begins, and did not know about the summer assignment previously. I highly recommend that you have the assignment completed by the first day of class.

2 Modified MLA Citations Students are not allowed to use outside sources for this paper. Therefore, the in-text citation that is required once you ve listed the title of the book is the page number (physical book) or location number (e-book.) Physical page numbers require just the number in parentheses. E-books require the addition of loc. before the location number. For example: Physical Book One of the foundational texts of American literature, The Great Gatsby utilizes a variety of characters from Roaring 20s Manhattan to lend verisimilitude to Nick Carraway s depiction of a thoroughly modern Babylon. Meyer Wolfshiem, for example, is based on historical gambler and organized crime figure Arnold Rothstein. Gatsby explains to Nick: "Meyer Wolfsheim? No, "He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919." (86) E-Book One of the foundational texts of American literature, The Great Gatsby utilizes a variety of characters from Roaring 20s Manhattan to lend verisimilitude to Nick Carraway s depiction of a thoroughly modern Babylon. Meyer Wolfshiem, for example, is based on historical gambler and organized crime figure Arnold Rothstein. Gatsby explains to Nick: "Meyer Wolfsheim? No, "He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919." (loc. 612) Advice 1. Winder uses a mix of chronological narrative, personal anecdotes, and stories about characters from each time period and region along the Danube. His writing is engaging, but can be tangential. To that end, I recommend that you approach the book with two tactics: a. View each section as an individual narrative. Each chapter is loosely related by theme, but may still jump around chronologically and geographically. b. Below, I have selected portions of each chapter that are skip-able for the purposes of this assignment. You are not required to read these sections. 2. If possible, I recommend that you consider buying the Kindle version of the book through Amazon and downloading the Kindle app. The Kindle app makes it easy to look exciting new words like quisling and chialistic. Keeping a copy on your ipad will allow you to always have the book in class! We will refer to the book throughout the year. 3. Winder refers to the Habsburg territories by different names throughout the book, depending on the current Emperor and political climate. Keep in mind that The Holy Roman Empire, The Habsburg Lands, Prague (the capital), Vienna, (the next capital), Austria, The Austrian Empire, and The Austro- Hungarian Empire all refer, more or less, the same government and the territories it controlled. me if you have any questions! -Ms. Barlaz barlaz@longleafschool.com Sections to Read Introduction (loc. 1 15) o Place Names o The Habsburg Family Chapter 1 o Tombs, Trees, and A Swamp (loc ) o Wandering Peoples (loc ) o The Hawk s Fortress (loc ) o Look Behind You!
