3 RENDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Unfortunately due to commitments Cllr. Greenburgh had to resign both as Chairman and Councillor. He joined the council in November 2015 taking over from Cllr. Farquhar as Chairman in January At the meeting Cllr. David Willett was proposed and seconded and it was agreed unanimously as the new Chairman. As a result a new Vice Chairman was needed and Cllr. James Morford was proposed and seconded also agreed unanimously. This results in a vacancy for Councillor should anyone be interested please contact Cllr. Willett ( ) or the clerk Chris Salmon ( ) chris.salmon2@btinternet.com Have a talk with them to find out what it s all about. The proposal that PARK playing field be transferred to Rendham Parish Council was accepted in principle following a meeting of SCDC. Subject to call in and advertising in the local paper twice, the transfer looks to be going ahead. SCDC have asked for the Parish Council solicitor details. The clerk has contacted James Robbins at Marshall Hatchick, Woodbridge, who has agreed to charge about 300 for disbursements but has also agreed to donate his fee, which is very much appreciated. The village has been offered a defibrillator by Mr Davis and Ms Phillips of the Corner house. They both attended the Parish Council meeting to discuss the implications of taking on the project. It was agreed to take it forward. These machines cost about 800. Decisions will need to be taken as to where to site the equipment although outside the village hall was suggested. We will have to purchase a box to store it in and to identify a person to be responsible for it. There have been nearly ten people who have attended CPR/Defibrillator training at Bruisyard Village Hall, should anyone else be interested please let Chris Salmon Parish Clerk know. The clerk has reported the concerns raised by several people to Suffolk County Council highways and has continued to chase for more information. Cllr. Burroughs was unable to attend but forwarded a written report with the following headlines, full report to be published on village website. Get your flu vaccinations now GCSE and A Level results on the rise in Suffolk Recruitment gets underway for Suffolk Fostering Service Vital to check white goods says Suffolk Fire and Rescue Parents urged to have their say on school admissions consultation Although not a Parish Council matter the following was reported by Jean Palmer that someone had defecated in the church before Remembrance Sunday. Cleaning the area was very unpleasant and she asked if everyone would keep an eye open to prevent further incidents. Cllr. Willett also suggested that the PCC report it to the police. - ACC Spring Flower Show, April 8th 2018, Sweffling Village Hut. Plant your bulbs today! throughout the year. Find out more at HOLY HOLY THE CHILDREN S SOCIETY COFFEE MORNING Our coffee morning, held on Saturday 11 November 2017 was again most successful. After costs, the amount we raised on the day was 1, and that figure doesn t include the income from the sale of Christmas cards and any further ongoing donations. The greatest thanks must go to our stoic committee who never stop planning, making, baking and giving; our friends, family and neighbours who are always digging deep into their pockets; our supporters who always come along, and, most importantly, Parish magazines, newspapers and websites who always seem to find a space for our notices. We are grateful - as are the children and young people we strive to help. Lorraine Lloyd

5 On several days during November a Barn Owl has been out hunting over the hayfield in broad daylight as early as 1pm. Although this is known from time to time, it is much more usual to see them hunting later in the afternoon (much later in the summer), say an hour before dusk. I have tried to get photographs, but although daytime the light has still not been good, so the pictures are not brilliant. There will be disadvantages in daylight hunting. For instance, I have watched Owls being mobbed at this time by another predatory bird, the Kestrel, so that their hunting is interfered with. It is suggested that daytime hunting may indicate that the owls are finding food harder to find. The main prey in the hayfield is the Short-tailed Vole, or Field Vole, a creature that always lives in Grassland. In the food remains of Barn Owls in Sweffling and Rendham three years ago I also found very large numbers of shrews, both Common and Pygmy Shrews. This was echoed in the number of shrews brought in by our cats (but never eaten by them. Although predatory birds readily eat shrews, they seem to be distasteful to cats). However, for many months the cats have not brought in a single shrew. I hope to get some more owl pellets locally to see whether the shrews have become scarcer perfectly possible as small mammals do go through quite large natural cycles in their numbers over the years. Bullfinches are again very regular in the garden. Despite the male s bright colours they can be quite reclusive and hard to see. They do however have a very distinctive call, a soft, low pitched single note, which although quiet does tell you that they are there. They have been busy eating the seeds of an ornamental Maple, little helicopters just like small Sycamore seeds. Studies of Bullfinches have shown that in winter they rely heavily for food on the seeds found in the keys of Ash, which are rather similar. It is when seeds like these are scarce that they turn to the flower buds of fruit trees, where they can do so much damage. I presume that the great reduction in Ash trees as a result of the rapid spread of Ash die-back disease will affect the Bullfinch population. Flocks of Rooks flying to their winter roost in the woods towards Benhall are a feature of the winter evenings. These winter gatherings can be enormous. I have estimated well over a thousand gathering together. They must include birds from several rookeries and from quite a large area. They gather in mid-winter in tree tops, arriving in late afternoon. By late winter, however, they have taken to gathering, in smaller numbers, in the trees in which they will have their breeding rookeries. They share this roost with an equal number of Jackdaws, alongside which they can be seen feeding in the fields (although their nesting is quite separate the rooks nesting in high trees and the Jackdaws in chimneys, old buildings and holes in trees.) With the rooks making their loud caw and the Jackdaws chacking (hence Jack ) the noise from such a big roost can be quite impressive. 5

6 On Tuesday 10 October many from Rendham attended the funeral of Michael Izzard at St Mary the Virgin, Dennington. The Rev Jonathan Olanczuk, in his address, paid tribute to Michael s work for the East Anglian Children s Hospice. A large congregation attended our Remembrance Day service on Sunday 12 November, which was conducted by Prof. John Tesh, and included readings by Dr Anne Fitzgerald-Robbins and Mrs Suzanne Stevens. Mr Denis Moore carried out the ceremony of placing the wreath on the War Memorial, and of reading the time-honoured words. Lovely flower arrangements, on the theme of poppies, made the church look beautiful and were admired by many who stayed for coffee and biscuits afterwards. The collection for the Royal British Legion amounted to 140. The Christmas Day service at St Michael s will be at 11am taken by Martin Percival. Remembrance Sunday has a poignancy that affects most of us; I feel one thing that adds to this is ringing half-muffled bells. Half muffled is when one side of the clapper has a leather pad fixed to it, so that the listener hears a clear note then an echo. When one chooses to ring a minor key, as we tend to at Rendham, the sound can be even more meaningful. Next year it will be 100 years since the Armistice was signed which marked the end of WWI. In Suffolk we hope to ring all the church bells (that are safe to ring) as part of the national campaign called Ringing for Peace; Armistice 100. This is a joint initiative between Ringers and the Department for Communities and Local Government, the goal being to recruit 1,400 new ringers between now and November This is the same number of ringers that were lost in the Great War and commemorated on the ringers Central Council Roll of Honour. We have around 200 ringable towers in Suffolk. We last rang them all, over a period though, for the millennium. This time we would like to hear them all on just one day. In addition, there is another national project Battles over - A Nation s Tribute. Pipers will be piping in the morning, bugles sounding and 1,000 beacons will be lit across the UK in the evening. Ringers have been asked to ring at 1,000 towers at 7:05pm on the 11th November. Rendham St Michael will be one of those towers. I expect we will ring them half muffled too. If you would like to be one of the ringers, now would be a good time to start learning. CHRISTMAS BRUNCH AND MARKET Saturday 9th December, Sweffling Hut, 10:00am-midday.
