2 Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. When Jesus says paradoxical things like this, we can still trust him. Even when he makes claims that, at first glance, seem impossible, we know that he s not talking gibberish. Why? Because Jesus lived the ultimate paradox: he brought life out of death. His resurrection proves for us that things are not always as they appear. The Crucifixion, which looked like the end of Jesus influence, was actually a tremendous new beginning. So when Jesus promises that we will find life through a kind of death, we shouldn t question his claim. Of course in today s Gospel, Jesus isn t necessarily talking about physical death, although the red martyrs who suffer for him do in fact find their reward in eternal life. White martyrdom, on the other hand, is a kind of death to self that doesn t involve bloodshed. It means putting love and generous service ahead of our own self-gratification. It means doing these things for the sake of Christ. When he tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves, this is what he s talking about. So, how can we be white martyrs today? How can we sacrifice our desire for perfect comfort, or entertainment on demand, or status or pleasure or sleep or whatever else for the sake of serving another person? In our families, in our schools and workplaces, in our parishes, in our neighborhoods and our communities, there are myriad opportunities to lose our lives for the sake of Christ. But don t forget, in dying to ourselves, we will find our lives in a new way! The fulfillment Christ offers us in return, both now and in eternity, will be far better than anything we try to cling to on our own. 3 From our Seminarian Intern, John Inwoo Jeong Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time MT 11, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart Today s reading can be unacceptable for us who live in modern society because this modern society tries to devaluate our faith in God and human morality in succession and it makes us feel uncomfortable and nervous. And the faith requires us other duties and deeds which are different from secular people s. It requires us to practice better behaviors and morals and these become kinds of yoke and cross for us always. So, we ask each other, How does the faith give us rest? after listening to this Word from Jesus today, I will give you rest. But the faith in Jesus has given a lot of people the rest and the peace actually. I would like to share an untouchable man s story who lived in 18 th century of Korea. Il-gwang Hwang ( ) was an untouchable man living in the 18 th century s society. Although he was talented and cheerful person, many people disliked him because of his social position. He was really sad about that. However, one day, Hwang listened to a rumor about the Church which accepts everyone as same brothers and sisters. He could not believe it fully, but he learned the catechism, entered into the Church and received baptismal name, Simon. In the community, he could see all brothers and sisters in the Church, even yangban class (the highest noble class in 18 th century s Korea) accept him as their brother and they did not avoid to touch or hug him. This made Il-gwang Hwang moved to tears. He decided to return the love which he received to his new family, so he served the Church doing his best. Please Pray... Please pray for all of our parishioners who are sick or hospitalized: Mason Adkinson, Hilda Aucelli, Brian Borowski, Agnes Brown, Frank Brown, Tom Bukovec, Clifford Coffey, Rob DelSesto, Elizabeth Dravecky, Judith Greger, Mike Hanlon, Carrilynn Horwath, Ava Jusko, William Koshar, Jan Kulas, Kathy Kurchak, Charles McHugh, Anthony Melaragno, Debbie Orlando, Henry Oschip, Sandi Pandy, Cindy Pike, Marie Rieck, Bill Sprenger, Greg Usko, and Phil Wolfson, Mary Lou & Tom Zelazney, the shut-ins, those in nursing homes, those needing prayers, and all of the intentions written in our Book of Prayers located in the gallery. Many prayers help. To add a name for prayers, please call the parish office, or louise@stjustin.net. However, about 5 years later, he was arrested by the government. The investigator thought that Simon who is uneducated and untouchable guy could not understand the catechism well. So, the investigator claimed that the Heaven is just a fantasy and he asked Simon prove where is the Kingdom of God if Simon wants to proclaim the Catholic faith is the truth. However, this ignorant guy answered very wisely. I know there is the Kingdom of God because I was living in there. It is in the sky also, but on the earth, too. The Heaven is my brothers and sisters who accepted this man as same brother, not an untouchable. This answer made the investigator angry and they took his life. Simon Hwang professed his faith until he died and he was beatified by Pope Francis in Listening to today s Gospel, we remember so many losses which the faith gave us. To get up early on Sundays, nitpicks of mom to bless before the meal, to suppress showering insults to those who irritate me. Yes, these are losses we have to bear. But, there is the rest which the faith gave me also! In short prayers, we have been with the Lord. In the moment of sorrow, we comforted ourselves because we believe that we can meet our deceased family and friends in the faith. And in the moment of injustice, we could have a hope because we believe that His justice will be done one day. We need to remember the rest, not only the loss. Then, we can understand today s Word as consolation giving us rest and accept it. Although his yoke upon us can be heavy and hard to carry, Jesus loves to carry it with us together for he is meek and humble of heart. Prayer Line Please call Theresa Davison, , to add your request to the Prayer Chain. You can reach the Sisters of Notre Dame prayer line at No Adoration July 3 - July 4 Eucharistic Adoration ~ Adorers needed: Monday: 1:00PM, Marge, Tuesday: 1:00 & 7:00 PM: Carolyn, Wednesday: 11:00 PM: Carole, Thursday: 9:00, 10:00 & 11:00 PM: Sue, Friday: 9:00 AM, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00PM, Loretta, Questions? Call Marion, Family Perspectives Come to me all who are weary and carrying heavy burdens. I will give you rest. Why do we acquire possessions that we have to worry about and protect with alarms? Why do we overwork ourselves trying to stay in control? Are we the problem? Jesus tells us today: Learn from me...my burden is light It is time to lighten our burden..

5 Director of Religious Education, Charles Hunt What s Francis Saying Now? Short Messages (Tweets) from Pope Francis + God looks with love upon every one of us. + Sharpen your gaze in order to see the signs God shows us in reality. + I repeat the firm condemnation of every form of torture and call on everyone to work for its abolishment and support victims and families. PSR Parish School of Religion registration is now open. Forms are in the church gallery and office. Children who attend public school are required to attend PSR classes. The goal of PSR is to form children as disciples of Jesus. It is at the service of parents, assisting them in the important task of handing on the Catholic Faith to their children. Catholic Humor One balmy day in the South Pacific, a navy ship espied smoke coming from one of three huts on an uncharted island. Upon arriving at shore they were met by a shipwreck survivor. He said, "I'm so glad you're here! I've been alone on this island for more than five years!" The captain replied, "If you're all alone on the island why do I see THREE huts." The survivor said, "Well, I live in one, and go to church in the other." "What about the THIRD hut?" asked the captain. "That's where I USED to go to church."
