1 11 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. This woman gave everything she had to Jesus in her courageous display of public repentance. The flask of ointment, for starters, was undoubtedly very expensive. To anoint Jesus in this way was to pamper him with a luxury. Thus she honored Jesus with the best gift she could give. But more than this external offering, the woman also gave Jesus her tears. She wept for her sins, for the hope of forgiveness, and for the love of Christ. She literally poured herself out before Jesus as she revealed the depths of her soul. Also, to wipe his feet with her hair was to give the gift of her humility. Cleaning someone s feet is a lowly task to begin with; but to use her own hair for the job revealed that she did not think of herself as too good. Simon the Pharisee, on the other hand, had exactly that problem. Jesus used the opportunity to distinguish between those who love much, and those who love little. The self-righteous, like Simon, have little room in their hearts for love of others because they are so full of the love of themselves. They feel they have nothing to repent for. This woman, however, acknowledged her weakness humbly and was all the more ready and willing to love. We, of course, are challenged to be as generous, courageous, and humble as this sinful woman. We are called not to compare our sins to others that are worse than ours, but rather to honestly recognize where we have failed. Then, like this woman, we can show great love to Christ by giving him the very best of what we have. 2 Dear Parishioners, The St. Justin Martyr Ministry Fair, held in Lambur Halll this past weekend, was a great success. People enjoyed popcorn and a variety of different refreshments as they spoke with members of the various ministries that serve the parish and community. Seeing all the beautiful displays about our ministries in one place certainly was inspiring! We want to thank all who planned, presented and participated in the Fair. Today we look to the future as we celebrate Stewardship Commitment Sunday. It is an opportunity for each of us to answer how we will share our special gifts of time and talent within our parish community. Give a little, get a lot. God loves a cheerful giver. Many of us go on road trips during the summer. This year we are invited to go on a special road trip, a pilgrimage with Pope Francis. Our diocese is mailing the Jubilee Year of Mercy Passport to each household as an invitation and guide for this pilgrimage. I especially like the incentive to reflect more deeply on many good things we already do as well as the challenge to try new ways to bring mercy into the world. A special indulgence is granted to those who make this pilgrimage of prayer and service. Please see the notice in this bulletin for more information. Extra copies of the Passport are available at the parish office. Last Wednesday, June 8, I celebrated my 42nd Anniversary of Ordination as a priest for the service of God s people. There have been many successes and much learning from mistakes. Through it all, God s constant grace has sustained my hope. I look to the future with confidence that we together will serve God and his Church better. Thank you for your support and prayers. Peace, Fr Kevin SJM Preschool Registration is OPEN! Please call the Parish Office to register by September 5, Welcome Child of God William Peter Misterka Family Perspectives David, one of the great men of faith in the Bible was also a great sinner. He was humble enough to repent and try again. The righteous men in the Gospel were humbled by the example of an imperfect woman who showed repentance and great love to Jesus. Let all of us humbly turn our hearts toward our Heavenly Father and give thanks that we are saved by Christ and not by our own works. Let our works be a thankful response to His love and mercy. Rest in Peace David Phillips, son of Randy & Rose Phillips

3 From our Director of Religious Education Charles Hunt What s Francis Saying Now? Short Messages (Tweets) from Pope Francis + We need to discover the gifts of each person: may communities transmit their own values and be open to the experiences of others. + The Saints are not supermen, nor were they born perfect. When they recognized God s love, they followed it and served others. + Let us hear the cry of the victims and those suffering, no family without a home, no child without a childhood. Out of the Mouths of Babes 3-year-old Reese was overheard praying, Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His name. PSR Parish School of Religion Parents can sign their children up now for the PSR school year. Registrations forms are in the church office. Children who attend public schools are required to attend PSR classes. The goal of PSR is to form children as disciples of Jesus by developing their understanding of Christian doctrine, encouraging a Christian moral life, inviting them to worship and prayer in Catholic liturgy, and orienting them toward service. St. Justin Martyr Parish School of Religion is at the service of parents, assisting them in the important task of handing on the Catholic Faith to their children. Becoming Catholic RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The letters "RCIA" stand for the "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults". It is the process in which men and women come to know Jesus Christ and are gradually introduced to the Catholic way of life, resulting in full membership through the Sacraments of Initiation. If you or someone you know are interested in joining the Catholic Church at St. Justin Martyr, please speak with Fr. Kevin, a team member or the RCIA coordinator, Charles Hunt at & Charles@stjustin.net. The RCIA Team invites you to offer a Rosary for the intentions of increasing the membership of St. Justin Martyr Church. Our prayers, example and welcoming outreach will foster growth in our parish. Ministry Fair Today you had the opportunity to complete a Stewardship Commitment Form. We thank you for being part of the various ministries in our parish. Please remember that at any time you can join one of the ministries that St. Justin Martyr has to offer. Holy Door Pilgrimage passport to celebrate the Year of Mercy Pope Francis has declared this a Jubilee Year of Mercy with the opportunity for the faithful to pass through two Holy Doors within the diocese and receive special blessings. The ritual dates back to the 15th century and teaches that those entering the Holy Doors are crossing the threshold from sin to grace, and from darkness to light. The Holy Doors in the Diocese are located at St. John Cathedral in downtown Cleveland and at the National Shrine in Our Lady of Lourdes on Chardon Road in Euclid. Each household in the diocese has been mailed a Jubilee booklet to track their pilgrimage by getting a stamp at either Holy Door location. The faithful are also invited to record corporal and spiritual works of mercy in the booklet. Those who engage in works of mercy at Catholic Charities sites can receive Worker of Mercy special stickers for their passports. Parishes and other diocesan institutions also will have the stickers for those who engage in works of mercy at home or other locations. Those who wish may reflect on their time on Pilgrimage or as Workers of Mercy on social media, with the hashtag #YearofMercyCle. Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon invites all to participate and to heed the words of Pope Francis who said, Mercy overcomes every wall, every barrier and leads you to always seek the face of the person. It is mercy which changes the heart and the life.

Do Small Things With God s Love It takes a whole lot of GOOD STEWARDS volunteering their time and talents to put on a St. Justin Martyr Ministry Fair. That was quite evident in Lambur Hall last Sunday when you walked in and smelled popcorn and saw an array of colorful tri-folds that represented 42 of our ministries. Beth Rossetti and Theresa Safigan would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of the Stewardship Commission who helped make this fair happen, Margie and Tom Drew, Diane Goss, Betty Houston, and Leslie Simpson. We would also like to thank the Ministry Leaders, Office Staff, lay witnesses, bulletin cover designer, poster makers, t-shirt sellers, gift wrappers, bakers, those representing the ministries during the fair, those who took pictures, ushers and greeters and the newsletter staplers, labelers, and writers of the articles. We cannot leave out Don Vanagas and Ray Yahner who very patiently listened to our instructions that we changed a couple of times and made the hall look great. Mary Prosuch used her talent to decorate the stones in the little boxes that were distributed and enjoyed by everyone. Without the support and words of wisdom from our Pastor, Fr. Kevin Liebhardt, Fr. Mark Latcovich and Deacon Tim Shell this would not have been possible. If anyone was left out, Thank You!! Thank you to all who worked and to those who attended for helping to make the Stewardship Ministry Fair a success. OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL S 26TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL is June 24, 25 & 26.
