2 2nd Sunday of Lent When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. Peter, James, and John already knew Jesus. They had been following him, learning from him, watching him for quite some time. But what took place before their eyes at the Transfiguration was unlike anything they had yet witnessed. This was not just a miracle or a message: this was a supernatural vision. When Jesus face suddenly shone like the sun and two ancient prophets appeared and spoke, and a heavenly voice announced the true identity of their friend and teacher, these three disciples nearly fainted in fear. It must have been too glorious, too strange, too astonishing to handle. But Jesus came and touched them to rouse them from their prostration. He told them, Rise, and do not be afraid. What a beautiful moment. The Lord realized that his friends were overwhelmed. He had compassion on their meager ability to comprehend what was really going on. He allowed them to participate in this moment of revelation to help them understand who he was, but he still understood who they were imperfect human beings who could not be expected to completely understand the ways of God. Sometimes we might long to witness a kind of Transfiguration moment. It can be tempting to think that if we had access to such a supernatural revelation, our faith would be strengthened and our lives would change. But Jesus knows us best. He knows what we can handle and he knows the perfect way to reveal himself. For most of us, most of the time, this means coming to know Jesus in the more ordinary ways of prayer, Scripture study, and the sacraments. Let s be sure we are ready to find Jesus there. 3 PARISH MISSION BEGINS TONIGHT! Dear Parishioners, These coming days of our Parish Mission promise to be grace-filled days for our entire parish family. Beginning this Sunday evening and continuing each evening through Wednesday, Passionist missionary, Fr. Jack Conley, will break the Bread of God s Word with us. What he offers is an opportunity to deepen our relationship with Christ. A Mission is like a retreat, a time to relax and be present with God. But since it is held here in the parish Church, it is available to all: young and old, married and single, widowed, separated, divorced, Catholic or not. Of course there are obstacles to attending the Mission; the press of many activities, some very important, some simply diversions a fact of life in our times. But the hectic pace of contemporary life, which might interfere with our attending the Mission, is in itself one of the most important reasons to be sure we set aside these few evenings and come! All of us really need to take once in a while to reaffirm what is really of lasting value in our lives. The Mission is just such an opportunity. Completing the whole Mission will bring the greatest amount of spiritual benefit but if you can only attend some of the evenings, by all means, do so. Be sure to come this Sunday evening for the opening of the Mission. Perhaps, after you experience the Spirit speaking to you through the service, some of the other things you felt you had to do this week will seem less urgent and you will want to be with us every evening. The words of the prophet, Amos, will serve as a sort of overall theme for our time of retreat: There is a hunger in the land. Not a hunger for bread. Not a thirst for water. But for the sound of the Word of God. We hope that each of our St. Justin Martyr families will take this opportunity to satisfy that spiritual hunger by attending the Mission and bringing someone you care about with you! Peace, Fr, Kevin Dispensation from Lenten Abstinence on March 17 Out of pastoral solicitude, Bishop Daniel Thomas has formally dispensed the faithful of the Diocese of Cleveland from the obligation to abstain from meat on the Memorial of St. Patrick, Bishop, which will be observed this year on March 17. Those who choose to partake in meat that day are encouraged to undertake another penance that day in the form of a corporal or spiritual work of mercy. In this way, a faithful Catholic still keeps the penitential spirit of a Friday in Lent and unites onself more closely with the suffering Christ and His Church. Please Pray... We will be doing the Joyfully Gifted Diocesan Retreat for Youth Ministry. This will be facilitated by Mrs. Rossetti as the diocesan representative. Any high school teen that would like to explore their Charisms (gifts that were given to us at Baptism), can join us for this retreat. Learning these Charisms is a great way to help guide you on making future decisions that will impact your life. A deposit of $20.00 is required and an RSVP by March 15. All high school teens are invited to join the Living Stations of the Cross practices on March 21, 30, and April 6. You can also help out with the Holy Thursday Fellowship Meal on April 13. 6 JUST IN FUN ventured to Presque Isle to celebrate Mardi Gras and the casino s 10th Anniversary. Each of our players received a tee shirt, hot dogs with chips and pop, and all the cupcakes their heart desired. Not a bad deal. The Committee would like to thank everyone for joining us and everyone came back a winner. Our next venture will be to Blissfield, MI on April 28th. Since our bus is currently filled and you would still like to be put on a waiting list, please contact Cheryl at FAMILY PERSPECTIVES God wants to bless our families. Are we too busy and stressed to notice and accept these blessings? God is present, waiting to meet and bless us in our families, but needs our time and attention. We need to take time together as families to have fun, to talk, to work together, to eat and pray. Schedule some family times in the calendar and see Jesus in the transfiguration of your family members and relationships. Stewardship is alive at St. Justin Martyr Church! We came to ask you for help again this year with our upcoming missionary trip to Guatemala, and again you opened your hearts and wallets to help the needy. We want to thank everyone who donated to this trip. Because of your generosity, we collected $4,781 to buy much needed medications and supplies to take with us to Guatemala. Words can not express our gratitude, and the gratitude of our team and the Guatemalan people, for the generosity of St. Justin Martyr. You are truly good stewards of the Lord.
