2 30 th Sunday in Ordinary Time The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. Jesus gives us a simple moral principle in today s Gospel. He speaks about two kinds of love: love of God and love of neighbor. He tells us that all the other laws and teachings of our faith fall under these two headings. So if we can master these, we will be in good spiritual shape! First of all, regarding the love of God, Jesus tells us in essence that we must love God completely and entirely, with our whole being heart, soul, and mind. If we are holding back from a full commitment to God, then we are falling short of this vision. So we would do well to examine ourselves and find those trouble spots where we are hesitant to give God everything. Is there a relationship we hold in our heart that is somehow separating us from God, either by negative association, lingering bitterness, or a kind of idol-worship of the relationship itself? What about our souls? Are we deeply attached to any pastimes, pleasures, or pursuits that cloud our soul from clearly welcoming the presence of God? An examination of our minds is in order as well. How do we direct our thoughts? Do we strive to form our conscience and understanding in the truth, or do we passively allow public opinion or popular consensus to direct our conclusions about the Church, the world, and our own identity? It follows that the closer we come to loving God with our whole being, the better we will be at loving our neighbors. The more we are filled with God s love, the more that love radiates out to those around us, and the less we concern ourselves about what we can get out of the deal. So let us truly love God, and all the rest will follow. Church Support ~ October 22, 2017 Total Collection: $8, Loose Money: $ Envelopes: $8, Envelopes used: 260 Student envelopes: 8 Average of envelopes: $31.72 Total contributing households: 715 Collection for Hurricane Irma, $3, Thank You & God Bless You!! Family Perspectives Today Jesus tells us love of God and neighbor are two parts of the greatest commandment. Loving families do both. They express their love of God as a family, knowing this will help them love each other. What energizes their love? Loving God through loving people. 3 Gabriel Newberry Welcome Seminarians! Today, as part of Priesthood Sunday we welcome two seminarians that will share a short reflection about their life, vocation and seminary experience, as well as be willing to talk with young men about entering the Priesthood. Gabriel Newberry is in the First Year Capuchin Formation Program at Borromeo Seminary. Sam Roberts is also in the First Year Capuchin Formation Program at Borromeo Seminary. Father Kevin Liebhardt Father Mark Latcovich St. Mary Seminary Father Louis Pizmoht Sam Roberts Please welcome them this weekend! Thank you for your participation in the Grateful Giving program. I am pleased to report that our Grateful Giving is being very well received by you, our parishioners. We have already heard from many members during Commitment Weekend. Father Jim Roach Our Lady Help of Christians Litchfield Father John Chrysostom Washington, D. C. Father Tom Mattingly St. Olaf Williamsburg, VA Diocese of Richmond Each year people throughout the world make New Year s resolutions. For many, these resolutions are short lived and quickly forgotten. At our Baptism and Confirmation, we made New Life resolutions. Our baptismal promises are lifelong commitments to Jesus and the Church. We recognize that all that we possess comes from God. We are God s stewards. We have been empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received. Father Chris Cox St. Francis, Medina Kevin Fox IV Theology St. Mary Seminary John Inwoo Jeong IV Theology St. Mary Seminary Today is Priesthood Sunday. Please remember on this special day to pray for our priests ordained from our parish, those ministering throughout the Cleveland diocese, as well as our diocesan and religious seminarians and those considering the priestly work of preaching the Gospel. Father Mark tells us that the seminary opened its doors with 78 men this year. 10 are Capuchins, 7 are from the Diocese of Youngstown, two are from the Archdiocese of South Korea, 3 are members of the Congregation of Saint Joseph. Our religious order seminarians are diverse, three from Mexico, Guatemala and Salvador. One seminarian is on the Basselin Scholarship at Catholic University, Washington DC 60 of our men are home spun, that is they have been born and raised in the Diocese of Cleveland! The spirit of stewardship is alive here at St. Justin Martyr. As good stewards, it is our responsibility to give back a portion of the time, talent and treasure we receive from our generous and loving God. Let us recommit ourselves to the Lord by taking the time to plan. Let us make stewardship of time and talent part of our lifestyle, and stewardship of treasure part of our budget. Follow-up letters will be mailed to all households from whom we have not yet received a response to our Grateful Giving Program. Please respond as soon as you are able by placing your intention card in the collection basket. Our Town and All Around Books They re back...and still $28! Stop in the Parish Office and pick one up! They make great gifts. Make checks payable: LCRTL

4 Director of Religious Education, Charles Hunt Pastoral Associate ~ Beth Rossetti beth@stjustin.net God Is With Us In His People My family and I want to thank each parishioner of St. Justin s for their immense support with the passing of my son, John. We are so grateful for your heartfelt condolences, prayers and presence during this difficult time. The outpouring of generosity and kindness is truly overwhelming. The phrase, God is with us in his people! keeps ringing in my ear as I call to mind all those who reached out to us at the funeral home, took part in the Funeral Liturgy, give us gifts and provide a helping hand. You are the face of God on earth. This is what St. Justin s is all about. Thank you! Thank you! What s Francis Saying Now? Short Messages (Tweets) from Pope Francis + Jesus gave us the light which shines in the darkness. Defend and protect this light: it is the greatest treasure entrusted to you. + As we remember Saint John Paul II, let us also recall his words: Do not be afraid! Open wide the doors for Christ! + On this day, let us remember that the Church is missionary by nature: mission is at the heart of Christian faith. + The Church is truly alive if it is maternal and missionary and goes out to meet others. + Let us bring the flame of Christ s love to humanity which needs true happiness and peace so much. Catholic Humor All the second grade children in the parish were lined up for the Pastor to hear their first confession. When it was Frankie s turn, Father asked him to confess his sins. The boy confessed, Father, I threw a stone at Jimmy. That was a very misguided thing to do, the priest replied patiently. Oh no, it wasn t misguided at all, responded little Frankie, I nailed him with my best shot! 5 All Saints Day November 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation Masses will be: Tuesday, October 31 Vigil Mass, 5:00PM Wednesday, November 1 10:00AM, 5:00PM, 7:00PM Annual All Souls Memorial Mass November 2 at 7:00pm We invite the parish community to a special liturgy on Thursday, November 2, when we will remember those who have died and were buried from both St. Justin Martyr and Holy Redeemer parishes during the last two years. During this special Mass, the names of those who passed away during that time will be read and family members will be invited to come forward to light a candle in their memory. At the conclusion of those names, anyone in attendance who would like to light a candle in memory of a loved one may come forward. As in the past, we invite family members who will be attending this Mass to submit a picture of their loved one which we will display in the church that evening. We will need all of those pictures no later than November 2. Pictures can be framed or unframed, and all pictures can be picked up immediately following the Mass. (Drop them off in the Parish Office). Won t you please consider how much your presence may mean to another in grief and then decide to come to worship with them on this night of remembering? The Funeral Ministry will be taking part in this liturgy. If you are interested in helping, or would like to bake, please call Beth, or beth@stjustin.net. (Names from the All Souls Envelopes will be posted in the bulletin next weekend) Vocations at the Crossroads The following parishioners are scheduled to receive the cross during the month of November: Week of November 4-5: Week of November 11-12: Week of November 18-19: Week of November 25-26: Ann Lyall Cheryl & Paul Vitelli Carol Sternad Kathy & Tom McCoy If anyone cannot make their week, please call Loretta Vanagas at Thank you for your time and prayers. If anyone is interested in receiving the vocations travel bag, please call the parish office at or Loretta at The bag may be picked up at the parish office over the weekend or received during the mass you plan on attending. Congratulations on Your Retirement! After 15 years of service above and beyond the call of duty, Ray Yahner, or Mr. Ray is retiring as our Maintenance Supervisor. Ray has been with us for 15 years and we are all going to miss him! He has been on call 24/7 and we re happy that he might eventually enjoy some much needed Rest & Relaxation! If you d like to wish Ray well and thank him for all he has done for our parish, as well as the school, CYO and many other organizations, you are welcome to stop over at Lambur Hall next Sunday after the 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 Masses. Enjoy some delicious donuts, wish him well, and share your favorite stories! Stewardship When we think of stewardship we think of Time, Talent, and Treasure. We have ministry fairs and fill out commitment cards which are the tools by which we learn to practice our stewardship. Stewardship is more than that. The actions of giving and sharing flow from our hearts naturally as we are mindful that God has given us these gifts to use as opportunity to minister to others around us. God asks these things of us so we may bear witness to the transforming power of Jesus so others come to follow him. At the end of the day it is about leading people to heaven. The everyday steward can help God transform those around us. Hofbräuhaus Trip The Bereavement Group will carpool from St. Justin Martyr on Wednesday, November 8 at 6 pm.
