2 10 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family is the cradle of life and love (On the Lay Members of Christ s Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today s Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is brother or sister. The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus preaching, and they are not amused. They set out to seize him, for they said, He is out of his mind. To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It s a mess by any standards. The family s perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus words to his family can seem controversial. Who are my mother and my brothers? Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to do the will of God. 3 Dear Parishioners, For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him (Jn 3:16-17) As Jesus disciples, what are we supposed to do? In today s Gospel Jesus says: For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. First we are to know that we are in the family, we are the sons and daughters of God. Then we are to do what Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father do love the world and its people so that they may be saved. Jesus shows us the way, the truth and the life. The way of division, of denigration, of insult and dehumanization are the tools of the devil. They cannot be used to save anything or anyone. The daily onslaught of such tactics in so many forms can wear us down, make us lose hope. When we feel ourselves losing hope we need to follow the example of Mary and the saints. Mary did the will of God and became the Mother of Jesus and our Mother. Let us fulfill in our lives the prayer of St. Francis: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Family Perspectives Family relationships have primary importance in our lives. Jesus, however, reminds us of a higher priority than family for each of us; the will of God. In today s Gospel he even says for whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. According to Mark s Gospel, Jesus had to overcome some of his own earthly family s resistance to his calling. What about us? Are our families open to God s will for each member, or must we, too, overcome family resistance?

Lace up your running shoes and venture outdoors to Edgewater Park to fight hunger in Cleveland. All proceeds benefit St. Vincent de Paul Society s hunger centers, which feed more than 14,000 Northeast Ohioans each and every month. 6 Saint Joseph Academy Summer Camps Saint Joseph Academy is excited to offer a variety of summer camps where campers will explore, learn and create through hands-on learning. Our summer camps teach new skills and provide tools that enable children to strengthen their minds and pursue their passions. This summer we are excited to offer a few new camps! Annual St. Justin Holy Name Golf Outing The annual SJM Holy Name Society Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, August 11. The event is at Erie Shores golf course in Madison and begins at 8:15AM. The cost is only $42 and includes golf fees, cart, food, beverages and prizes. The Holy Name donates money to help keep the cost low and this is not a fundraiser, so all money is used for the event. Stewardship NEWS! Come to the Captains Game! Summer is here and it is time for baseball at Classic Park. In the chorus of a Luke Bryant song he sings, I believe most Friday nights look better under stadium lights. Here is hoping you do too. On Friday night, August 10, at 7:00 P.M. the Captains will be playing Fort Wayne Tincaps (Padres) and you can attend the game with other parishioners of St. Justin Martyr sitting in section 106. You will not only be sitting under stadium lights, there will be fireworks. Tickets are $9.00 each (25% savings) and food vouchers are available for $7.00. The food voucher is good for a soft drink, chips and your choice of a hamburger, hot dog, chicken sandwich or pizza.
