2 16 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Martha was caught up in a whirlwind of her own making. She stressed herself out with all the tasks and chores she thought she had to do to host Jesus, but Jesus wasn t the one who expected all of that. He just wanted Martha s presence, her company and friendship. His only expectation was that Martha would prepare for him her heart, but she was fixated on preparing her home instead. How often do we create a similar whirlwind in our lives? How often do we fixate on external details, on making a good impression, on having all appearances looking just so, but forget what really matters? How often do we make ourselves anxious and worried about all we think we have to do? In today s Gospel Jesus calls us to stop the frenetic activity of our lives, to pause and listen, imitating Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. This can seem impossible. We look at our calendars and our to-do lists and cannot find a single slot in which to squeeze quiet prayer or silent spiritual listening. But Jesus asks us to reorganize our priorities. He tells us, There is need of only one thing. Really, Jesus? Have you seen our lists!? What can we possibly eliminate? Don t we need to do all of this? The Lord says no. What we need to do is to make time to be with him. The same Lord who turned water into wine and fed five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fish can also multiply our time. So instead of being like Martha who tried to tell Jesus what to do Tell her to help me let s be like Mary who listened to what Jesus had to say. 3 Dear Parishioners, As we come to this last weekend before our Festival, there are many things still to be done and many volunteers still needed. Many hands make light work. Many prayers are needed for good weather and good crowds, for the perseverance of all who have brought us this far, for the volunteers working this weekend and for a great, good time for all. With the Festival, there will be some differences with parking, especially for the Saturday 5:00pm Mass. Please follow the directions of the parking attendants. Festival time is a great time for fun and for growing the life of our parish. Please bring your family and friends and enjoy the festivities. Peace, Father Kevin Stewardship St Justin Martyr Parish Festival As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God s varied grace. 1Peter 4:10 Next weekend is the St. Justin Martyr Parish Festival. It is an excellent time to use your gifts to serve others by being a good steward and volunteering to help with the many tasks that need to be done. To have a successful three day festival it takes many hands and many talents. There is also a need for good stewards to pray for good festival weather, which is a must to make the festival a success. Come and join your fellow parishioners and neighbors in having fun playing the games, listening to music, dancing and taking a rocket ship ride. There is no fee to enter, dance, have fun or socialize. The food of many nationalities is delicious and made by fellow parishioners. Hope to see you there!! 4 From our Director of Religious Education ~ Charles Hunt charles@stjustin.net What s Francis Saying Now? Short Messages (Tweets) from Pope Francis + Vacations offer a time to rest and to restore the spirit, especially through a more quiet reading of the Gospels. + The summertime offers many people an occasion for rest. It s also a favorable time to take care of our human relationships. + Loving and forgiving as God loves and forgives. This is a program of life that can know no interruptions or exceptions. + Let s join forces, at all levels, to ensure that peace in beloved Syria is possible! Out of the Mouth of Babes A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin and Ryan. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. 'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, 'Ryan, you be Jesus!' PSR Parish School of Religion Parents can sign their children up now for the PSR school year. Registrations forms are in the church office. Children who attend public schools are required to attend PSR classes. The goal of PSR is to form children as disciples of Jesus by developing their understanding of Christian doctrine, encouraging a Christian moral life, inviting them to worship and prayer in Catholic liturgy, and orienting them toward service. St. Justin Martyr Parish School of Religion is at the service of parents, assisting them in the important task of handing on the Catholic Faith to their children. Becoming Catholic RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The letters "RCIA" stand for the "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults". It is the process in which men and women come to know Jesus Christ and are gradually introduced to the Catholic way of life, resulting in full membership through the Sacraments of Initiation. If you or someone you know are interested in joining the Catholic Church at St. Justin Martyr, please speak with Fr. Kevin, a team member or the RCIA coordinator, Charles Hunt at & Charles@stjustin.net. The RCIA Team invites you to offer a Rosary for the intentions of increasing the membership of St. Justin Martyr Church. Our prayers, example and welcoming outreach will foster growth in our parish. Only if we devote time to our children, speaking of important things with simplicity and concern, and finding healthy ways for them to spend their time, will we be able to shield them from harm. - Pope Francis, The Joy of Love #260
