2 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time He first found his own brother Simon and told him, We have found the Messiah. After spending the day in the company of Christ, Andrew took action. He shared the good news! Instead of keeping his newfound friendship with Jesus all to himself, Andrew invited his brother into the fold. Andrew found Simon and brought him to Jesus. This was no small matter because Simon would become Peter, the first pope! How important it is to bring others along with us to meet Christ! Yet, how often do we reach out with the kind of confidence that Andrew had? Are we ready and willing to share our faith with our family and friends? Do we consider our relationship with Jesus a gift to be shared, or a fact to be safely hidden away in our personal prayer corner? Part of our call as Christians is to evangelize others, to share with them the good news of salvation. Loving Jesus and following his moral commands is essential, of course, but it is not the end of the story. The Gospel message is meant for all people, and we are meant to be its messengers. Sometimes this requires us to step out of our comfort zone. It may mean speaking up when we d rather be silent. It may mean inviting someone to Mass when they might say no. But it might also mean a conversion for someone we care about. It might mean a new minister for the Church. Ultimately, it might mean another saint in heaven. None of that is up to us, however. What we can control is only whether we share our faith joyfully and extend the invitation to others to experience the peace that comes from knowing Christ. 3 Dear Parishioners, Come, and you will see. Jesus says. The Christmas season celebrates the Incarnation of the Lord. Jesus really shares our life wholly, and redeems our whole existence by His life, death and resurrection. We now begin liturgical Ordinary Time when we, like the disciples in our Gospel today, spend time with the Lord so that we might learn His way of life. Meeting Jesus and learning His ways influence our respect for one another, our concern for the ecology of the natural world and for our human society. He gives us hope and courage to meet the day-to-day challenges. He offers us a way back to life when we have chosen sin or death. And these answers are really only found when we stay with the Lord. The gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to stay with the Lord and with each other. We are more than an accidental conglomeration of individual believers. We are a Church, an assembly of those incorporated by their faith in Jesus. We form the Body of Christ for our time and place. Stewardship reminds us that the gifts God has given to each of us are unique in themselves. No assembly of believers, no church can rest on the gifts of a few people alone. When we all come together in giving back to God from the gifts and talents He has given us, we grow in our life with Christ and each other. We become vibrant and strong as the Body of Christ. Our calling is to cultivate the life and gifts of each member. Peace, Fr. Kevin Purses Paks The Stewardship Commission along with Pop and Praise will be sponsoring a service night on February 13 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Lambur Hall. The theme for the evening is Mardi Gras. Dinner will be served. A donation of $3.00 to cover the cost of the dinner will be appreciated. We will be making bags out of t-shirts and stuffing them with essentials needed by the homeless. We also will be stuffing purses and backpacks. They will be donated to St. Mary in Painesville and other shelters for the homeless. Everyone is invited to attend. Please join us for dinner and stay to help. Mark your calendar so you do not forget. We hope to see you there. With the frigid weather the homeless will be grateful for your stewardship. To fill Purses and Paks we are asking for donations of slightly used purses, backpacks, and t-shirts (with appropriate sayings). We need toothbrushes, toothpaste, wash cloths, combs and soap as well as travel size bottles of hand lotion, shampoo, mouthwash and hand sanitizers. All donations can be put in the tote box located in the Gallery of the church or taken to the Parish Office marked Purses and Paks. Reply to beth@stjustin.net or by February 11. 4 Director of Religious Education Charles Hunt Forming Children in Faith PSR What s Francis Saying Now? Short Messages (Tweets) from Pope Francis + Joy, prayer and gratitude are three ways that help us live authentically. + Baptism is also called illumination, because faith illuminates the heart and allows us to see things in a different light. + Like the Magi, believers are led by faith to seek God in the most hidden places, knowing that the Lord waits for them there. + God walks along the dusty paths of our lives and responds to our longing for love and happiness by calling us to joy. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA Becoming Catholic The RCIA not only forms those desiring to become Catholics by instructing them in the faith, worship and practices of the Church, it uses various rites to mark the stages towards full union with Christ and the Church. In the coming weeks, candidates seeking to join our parish family will be participating in these special rituals during various Masses. At the 9:30 Mass on January 21, we will celebrate the Rites of Acceptance & Welcoming. Through the Rites of Acceptance (for the un-baptized) and Welcoming (for the baptized) inquirers express publicly their intent to enter into a formal relationship with the Church. This rite, and others, take place during the Mass allowing us as parishioners to recognize, welcome, pray for and support those wanting to join our family of faith.. Catholic Humor + A PSR teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back at Sodom and turned into a pillar of salt. Bobby then blurted out, "My mommy looked back once while she was driving and she turned into a telephone pole." + Another PSR teacher said to his students, "We have been learning about how powerful the kings and queens were in Biblical times, but there is a higher power. Who can tell me what it is?" Tommy exclaimed, I know, Aces!" Adult Confirmation Any older teens or adults who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation are invited to join the Adult Confirmation class that will begin meeting on January 21, The class will meet for 5 sessions at St. John Vianney Parish is Mentor.
