2 Mass Intentions for the Week MONDAY - March 11 ~ Lenten Weekday 7:00 PM Sammon & McGarry Families, Family TUESDAY - March 12 ~ Lenten Weekday 8:30 AM Terry Liebhardt (A), Family WEDNESDAY - March 13 ~ Lenten Weekday 7:00 PM Rev. Joseph Goebel THURSDAY - March 14 ~ Lenten Weekday 7:00 PM Irene Veres (B), John & Mary Jane Buehner As we enter into this Lenten season of penance and self-denial, we're reminded that the God we follow is no stranger to these things. In this Sunday's Gospel, we see the temptations of Jesus which have parallels throughout Scripture and in our own lives. The apostle John warns against temptations to sensual lust, enticement of the eyes, and a pretentious life (cf. 1 John 2:16). Before Eve plucks the fruit from the tree, she hears it is good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). The temptations of Jesus are our own. "Turn these stones to bread." Here is the lure of bodily comfort, like good food or sensual lust. It's the simplest of temptations because it's instinctual. We want good for our bodies! But there may be times these bodily goods don't serve the higher good for our souls. The leap "from the temple parapet" would entice the eye of the person watching. A feat like this would prove Jesus' Messianic ability. His popularity could be a shortcut to the cross. We might not be daredevils, but we want people to like us and be impressed by us. Do we sacrifice our values along the way? To "bow and worship" the devil - and so claim power and a pretentious life - seems like a dramatic temptation. Not everyone may feel enticed by power in the professional sense, but all of us want control. A volunteer team can feel just as intense as the boardroom! How often do we prefer to be in control of our lives (and perhaps even the lives of others), rather than allow God to be God? When we consider areas of temptation and sin, it's not to feel ashamed. The temptation in the desert reminds us that we are not alone and that the strength of Jesus can be our strength, too. 3 Dear Parishioners, A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain within me. Psalm 51 Today s readings speak to us of our sinful world and of our loving God. God s love, alive in Jesus, not only counters the long reign of sin but also opens for all people a whole new way of living. We are called today to be alive with the same love of Jesus and, with Jesus, to bring that love to others. Many of us are godparents and sponsors for young people. Do we share with them our faith and prayer and the good example of our lives? It is what we promised to do. If the people we asked to be godparents and sponsors are not coming to Church, or not otherwise giving a good example, do we reach out to call them back? Do we encourage people to return to the practice of the faith? Do we invite people without a church to come and see, as Jesus did with his first disciples? Are we willing to confront the sin in ourselves and in others with God s grace and mercy and not with rationalization, denials or indifference? The Lent Communal Penance Service at St. Mary Magdalene on March 12 and the Diocesan-wide Evening of Penance on March 20 are good opportunities to welcome God s forgiving and transforming grace. Bring a friend! How do we remain steadfast? How do we sustain that willing spirit? The Sacraments and Scriptures, the prayers and programs of the Church provide a foundation and strong support. The new FORMED digital platform brings thousands of faith-filled movies, books and programs right into your home to help you grow in faith. But to bring what we receive to full maturity, we must be willing to take the risk of being like Christ for and with each other in our daily life. This is our challenge for this Lent. Peace, Fr. Kevin Unlocking the Secrets of the Mass Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00pm St. Justin Martyr Church Has the Mass lost it s meaning to you? 4 Voices of the Saints All the efforts of the human mind cannot exhaust the essence of a single fly. (St. Thomas Aquinas) There are more tears shed over answered prayers than over unanswered prayers. (St. Teresa of Avila) I have no taste for corruptible food or for the pleasures of this life. I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, who was of the seed of David; and for drink I desire his blood, which is love incorruptible (St. Ignatius of Antioch) Becoming Catholic RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is the process in which men and women are gradually introduced to the Catholic way of life and become fully initiated. If you or someone you know are interested in joining the Catholic Church at St. Justin Martyr, please speak with Fr. Kevin, a team member or the RCIA coordinator, Charles Hunt at & Charles@stjustin.net. PSR Parish School of Religion Children who attend public schools are required to attend PSR classes. The goal of PSR is to assist parents in forming their children as disciples of Jesus. Registration forms are in the church gallery and office. Catholic Humor Director of Religious Education Charles Hunt There were a bunch of priests reciting vespers together; Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, along with a parish priest. All of a sudden the lights flickered and went out. The Franciscans burst into song praising God for brother darkness. The Dominicans began debating the theology of darkness. The Jesuits began to argue whether they were still bound by Church law to recite vespers. The parish priest went and changed the light bulb.
