2 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. In the parable of the sower that Jesus tells in today s Gospel, the ideal is to be the seed sown on rich soil that yields an abundant harvest. As Jesus explains, this means we should strive to be the one who hears the word and understands it. So how do we place ourselves in this category? How do we assure that we will hear God s voice (i.e., the word) and actually understand what he s saying to us? The answer comes in the parable itself. Jesus explains what we need to avoid in order to make sure our seed bears fruit. First, we must beware of the evil one who comes and steals away the seed of God s word. Faithfully praying the Lord s Prayer, with its request to deliver us from evil, is a good starting point here. Placing ourselves under God s protection every day is like taking up a shield against the forces that would seek to derail us. Secondly, we must be committed enough to God s word that tribulation or persecution do not uproot us or make our faith wither and die. Here, too, sincerely praying the petition in the Lord s Prayer Thy will be done can prepare us to accept whatever comes our way without waffling or wavering. Finally, we must be careful that worldly anxiety and the lure of riches do not choke us. Again, we turn to the Lord s Prayer and find an antidote built in: Give us this day our daily bread. We pray not for a new car or a winning lottery ticket, but for our basic needs. So let us embrace the prayer Jesus gave us, indeed the words he himself gave us to say, as we seek to truly hear and understand God s word. 3 Dear Parishioners, The Gospels tell us that Jesus sent out the disciples two by two. There is something very Christ like in accomplishing great works with the help of others. 5 From our Seminarian Intern John Inwoo Jeong Pastoral Associate ~ Beth Rossetti beth@stjustin.net Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, MT 13, 3-9 A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns, on rich soil. I believe you already know a saint whose name is Maximilian Kolbe. He was a Franciscan priest and missionary founded monasteries in many eastern countries. Later, he sacrificed himself for a Jewish man in the Auschwitz. He was a wonderful sower who spread God s Word but also was a seed which sacrifices itself to bear a hundred fruits. But today, I would like to introduce one of his seed which he sowed in Japan. The seed s name is Paul Takashi Nagai who was a physician of radiology and a pacifist. Although he was not a catholic first, his fiancé Marina was a very religious catholic. She and his awful experience as a surgeon in China-Japan war made him reflect on the Catholic faith. And as he worked in the hospital where is in Nagasaki, he had close relationship with Franciscan monastery which was founded by St. Kolbe. These brothers and Marina led him to receive his new baptismal name Paul. Paul Nagai had peaceful life with his family and religious brothers for a while. But, as Japanese Empire started the Pacific War, the peace was broken into fragments. And on 9 th August 1945, the second nuclear bomb was dropped onto Nagasaki. He could survive because he was working in hospital, but he had to find his wife dead several days later. At this moment of mourning, he first thanked to God be with her because she was found holding her favorite rosary. The radiation influence also gave him leukemia. Other physicians told him that he would not survive more than 3 years. Paul decided to spend his last days for the world peace and the demilitarization and he wrote books about his faith and experiences. He also published books observing his disease to warn the danger of nuclear weapons. Through his faith and books, he encouraged many Japanese to reflect what they did during the war and to start the peace movement campaign with him. Paul Nagai lived 3 years longer than they had expected and was honored with the title of Servant of God after the death. His life tells us how a good sower of God can produce good seeds and how another good sower can be produced from the seeds. God sowed His Word in St. Kolbe. St. Kolbe sowed His Word in Paul Nagai. And Paul Nagai finally sowed His Word in whole Japan. So, we say that he was another wonderful sower who spread God s words but also a seed which sacrificed itself to bear a Teen If your teen is entering ninth or tenth grade in the fall, you will receive in mid July applications forms for our high school programs of FRESH Faith and Confirmation.
