On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem!

5 BOUNDARIES Today, St. Paul talks in very eloquent terms about boundaries when it comes to our sexuality. By seeing our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, Paul gives us a very strong and spiritual foundation for ways to look at our sexuality. Contrary to what our culture is shouting at us, we are free to do whatever we want with our bodies. The Word of God tells us: You are not your own property; you have been bought and paid for. That is why you should use your body for the glory of God. It s not hard to see what happens when we disregard boundaries in relationship to our bodies. On the sexual level, there are the consequences that range from abortion, through sexual diseases, even to death from AIDS. None of these are to be treated with anything less than the utmost seriousness. When we look more closely at our second reading from St. Paul, we see how much he values the body. It is not just something that we look on as a burden, or use for the purpose of satisfying our selfish desires. He says very clearly, You should use your body for the glory of God. When men and women in a committed marriage relationship express their love for one another through a sincere and kind expression of their sexuality, they are actually giving glory to the God who created them. When we strengthen our personal boundaries and respect the boundaries of others, we create more safety and happiness, and lessen the stress and pain in our lives. We remain closer to our vocation of following Jesus in all of our daily life decisions. Once again, St. Paul reminds us: You know surely, that your bodies are members making up the body of Christ. May we all have the grace of deep gratitude for the gift of our bodies. Peace Fr. Michael Petersen

6 FLAG PRESENTATION DAY Each year the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus holds its Flag Presentation Day in February. In past years this project has received the Freedoms Foundation National Award and the Knights of Columbus To Be A Patriot Award for promoting an understanding and appreciation of responsible citizenship and respect for our Flag. In its 43rd year, this project could not be the success it has been over the years without the dedication of the past oficers, members, and the continuing ind support of the citizens of the area communities. They will be presenting lags to schools, churches and public institutions, and they invite you to be part of this program. They invite you to receive an American Flag at their banquet on February 15, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fond du Lac. The American Flags are of ine quality, suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Three lag sizes are available for you to choose from 3 x 5, or 4 x 6 or a 5 x 8. As an invited, the Knights of Columbus will provide you one banquet meal. Any additional guests are very welcome to join you. The cost of a gust meal is $14.00 per person. So they may plan for the evening program, please call SK Dick Taddey and he will send you an application.
