Snyder, Pastor OUR VISION The Columbia United Methodist Church is passionately committed to proclaiming God s Word, growing in the love of Christ, and using our gifts and talents to serve God in our church, community, and world. You ve heard the old phrase, Take time to stop and smell the roses. Hopefully you are not finding yourself in a place of saying, What roses? Times are tough for many people. It is important for us not to lose hope. When I am feeling down the Psalms often help me to improve my perspective. Sometimes I just sit and ask God to hold me, like a child climbing up into a parent s, aunt s or uncle s, or grandparent s lap. Does this always work for me? Most of the time it does! Sitting with God, just enjoying God s presence is perhaps the best thing we can do no matter how we are feeling. But often we know it is when we are troubled that we turn to God. But let me challenge you on something. As in all our relationships what would happen if you only called someone when you needed something. Would that be a healthy relationship over time? Or would the other person begin to think that you only want to interact for what you can get out of the relationship? Yes I am a pastor and you would expect me to say spend time with God. But when is the last time you just sat with God. No worries, no pressures, just enjoying one another. The next two months hold major holidays where we give thanks and welcome anew the coming of Jesus Christ our Savior recognizing His birth into the world He has made. I invite you to join me in sitting in our loving God s presence on some consistent basis, and not to wait until you are stressed to do so. I am excited in anticipation of hearing how this simple act will impact your life. Happy Thanksgiving! And Happy Sitting! Pastor Jeff UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The United Methodist Women s meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. The program will be The Origin of Thanksgiving, presented by Greta Kernacky. Devotions will be led by Naomi Myers. The World Thank Offering Services will be held on Sunday, November 21. The guest speaker will be Rev. Sally Wisner-Ott, a United Methodist missionary serving as a Church and Community Worker with LUMINA in Lancaster. Thank Offering gifts will be received at these services. A big thank you to our volunteers who are serving as nursery attendants during the Traditional service. We have six teams of two people who serve on a rotating basis. Thank you to Mindy and Jay Shellenberger, Lori Winders, Cass Moser, Sally Draper, Ruth Mahan, Judy Earle, Carolyn Flory, Jamie Weisser, Mikayla Kemmerly, Carol Sener and Jean Urban. We also have three dedicated ladies who have served in the nursery for many years long before we had a Praise Service and do so now during the Praise Service. 2 CELEBRATION This year our celebration Sunday for Veteran s Day is November 14. Our guest speaker that day will be Kevin Kraft of Clyde Kraft Funeral Homes. Like his father, Clyde, Kevin has been very active in support of our veterans. Please invite a friend to help us honor all veterans past and present. SECRET SANTA Yes, it s that time again. This year the date is December 12. There is a need for rolls of wrapping paper and medium size gift bags. Also, donations would be greatly appreciated to offset the cost of advertising. Please bring paper, bags, or donations to the church office or see Pat Sprout. This is an outreach project sponsored by the Outreach Committee of our church. If you wish to participate, fill an old shoebox with small gifts for a boy or girl and bring to the church no later than November 14. Do not wrap the box. Examples of gifts are: School supplies: pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, slinky, etc. Hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar of soap (in plastic bag), washcloth, comb, etc. We would like to thank everyone for their support of our family during Hazel s illness and recovery at St. Anne s Home. Your many cards and frequent visits were a constant reminder of your care and concern. The kind words of encouragement and prayers were a source of comfort to us. Please place this information in an envelope. The goal this year by Samaritan Purse, sponsor of the project, is to distribute 8,500,000 shoeboxes to children around the world. Let s join together to make CUMC a vital part of that effort. OUR NEWEST MEMBER Please extend your welcome to Thomas Pennell the next time you see him in church. Thomas has been attending worship here with his wife, Bonnie, and son, Brett, for quite some time. He recently requested a transfer of his membership to CUMC from another local United Methodist congregation. Welcome to the family Tom!

The media hits them with lies from every side- lies about who they are, what they should be like, and what they should believe. Rise Up will help them to fight back. It will help them to expose the world s deceptions and challenges teenagers to: Escape the Enemy s expectations and lies, Discover who they are in Christ Make a full-on, nocomprimise commitment to serving Jesus Christ, Equip them to make a serious impact for Jesus on their generation and to live the rest of their lives as a warrior for Jesus!! These cards make excellent gifts by themselves, tucked away in stockings with smaller items, or in special Christmas cards for those near or far away. By purchasing Scrip Gift Cards you will be helping the Youth Ministry and reducing the mortgage debt at the same time. Scrip will donate a percentage of each gift card sold to us. It s that easy! And there are no added surcharges or fees that some cards add to activate them. Scrip cards look and can be used the same as cards that you would purchase elsewhere. Obviously, we would love it if you would share the order form with your family, friends and co-workers. That is why we have a month to order.
