5 TENTH PRESS MAY 14, 2017 Spring Choral Service and June Summer Choir By Colin Howland Each year on the evening of the third Sunday of May Tenth offers the Spring Choral Service. It marks the end of the choral season for both the Tenth Children s Music program and the Tenth Church Choir. The intent is to celebrate God s faithfulness in these ministries and gives an opportunity for both children s and adult choirs to make a special offering of praise together to our great and awesome God. The evening sermon will be given by Dr. Goligher. This year, the choirs will be singing several anthems from Old Testament texts, including The First Song of Isaiah, The Last Words of David, and portions of Psalms 119, 122, and 42. The congregational hymns will also be taken from Old Testament texts and paraphrases. Singing the Scriptures has always been central to the worship life of the Church. In his introduction to the Genevan Psalter of 1543, John Calvin highlights the significance of singing the words of Scripture: We should have songs that are not only upright but holy, that will spur us to pray to God and praise Him, to meditate on His works so as to love Him, to fear Him, to honor Him, and glorify Him. For what St. Augustine said is true, that one can sing nothing worthy of God save what one has received from Him. Wherefore though we look far and wide we will find no better songs nor songs more suitable to that purpose than the Psalms of David, which the Holy Spirit made and imparted to him. Thus, singing them we may be sure that our words come from God just as if He were to sing in us for His own exaltation. Wherefore, Chrysostom exhorts men, women, and children alike to get used to singing them, so as through this act of meditation to become as one with the choir of angels. The choral programs at Tenth exist to instill in every chorister the love of singing God s praise. June is a special month for Tenth music each year, in that we offer a special summer choir during each evening service that month. All interested singers, age 7th grade up through senior adult, are invited to come each week to the balcony at 5:15 PM to learn an accessible anthem and sing it for the evening service. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who cannot generally commit to the nine months of service required to be in the Tenth Choir. It is also intended to be family friendly, something that parents and older children can do together to serve the Lord! No prior choral experience is necessary; all from these age groups are welcome. If you can only come to one or two weeks, that s fine! If you can come to all four, terrific! We want each one to be able to participate, whatever their ability or scheduling constraints. 9 TENTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN MAY 14, 2017 Tenth Property Plan and Financial Discussion By Frank Harder, Capital Campaign Committee Chair As I have been speaking with individuals and groups from our congregation, I often am asked about our property management plan. I like to answer the question from both a long-term and short-term perspective. For many years our church was space constrained. Our large sanctuary was not balanced by support facilities (classrooms, offices, meeting spaces, and fellowship spaces) common to most modern churches, and our ministry, educational, and evangelistic efforts were restrained accordingly. Because 1710 Spruce Street is adjacent to the church it is ideally suited to serve those functions. Now that we have taken the constraint away, our spiritually sensitive congregation is finding new and creative ways to use our new spaces in the service of our Lord Jesus Christ. Already: The 1710 Spruce ministry center has become the primary support building for Tenth Church for outreach, fellowship, and adult education. The carriage house has been legally joined to the sanctuary and is now thought of as part of the Sanctuary complex, which also includes the Middle Building and the Delancey Building. It serves our preschool during the week and as the two- and threeyear-old nursery on Sundays. This is just the beginning. In the immediate future two new classrooms are being planned for 1710 as well as a courtyard between the sanctuary and That s in less than two years of occupancy; imagine what the Lord will do over the next decade! What is our plan for 315 and 1716? In addition to the sanctuary complex and the 1710 Spruce ministry center, Tenth Church owns two nearby row homes, 315 South 17th Street and 1716 Spruce Street. One or both of these properties could be sold at some future time to help pay off the mortgage on the 1710 Ministry Center. At present: 315 South 17th is being used by The City School during the week. A portion of their rent is being used to pay down the mortgage on Those payments give Tenth a sufficient incentive not to monetize the property to pay down the 1710 mortgage Spruce is being vacated and is surplus to our current needs. A tenant is being sought for the building that will cover all its costs and make a contribution toward paying down the 1710 mortgage. Session is seeking to hold the property against the prospect of future growth so long as there is no direct impact on the operating budgets of the church. We estimate the combined value of 1710 Spruce, 1716 Spruce, 315 South 17th at approximately $8 million. As of March 31, 2017, we owed $4.6 million on 1710 and 1716 combined. Over the past several years gifts, bequests, and rental income have been used to reduce the church s obligations to this level and fund renovations already completed. In addition, as of March 31, 2017, the cash balance in the capital funds of the church was $ 1,094,485. Please pray for our team as we analyze our immediate cash needs and plan the pay down of the mortgages. The campaign seeks to raise $3 million over three years. The money will be used to service and retire the debt as well as make renovations needed to support ministry initiatives. The season for imagining we could expand into the building next door has come to an end. A new season is well underway imagining how the Lord would have us use the space he s given us and joining together to pray, serve, and give in order to make that a reality. Please prayerfully consider how Lord would have you respond and give as you have ability. Every gift, no matter the size, is significant. Success will be measured by our congregation s unity in the accomplishment of this task as well as progress toward the financial goal. Thank you for your prayers.
