Hail, in the time appointed, His reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, To take away transgression, and rule in equity. He comes with comfort speedy to those who suffer wrong; To help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; To give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, Whose souls, condemned and dying, were precious in His sight. O er every foe victorious, He on His throne shall rest, From age to age more glorious, all blessing and all blessed; The tide of time shall never His covenant remove; His name shall stand forever, that name to us is Love. arr. James Koerts/Colin Howland How Firm a Foundation arr. Paul Koch How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, I will still give thee aid; I ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; For I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I ll never, no never, no never forsake. The Easter Sacrificial Offering (ESO) is a ministry of Global Outreach and supports international and cross-cultural ministry over and beyond our designated budget. This year, ESO will support several ministries, including a school for Syrian refugees, eye surgeries for the underprivilged Ethiopians, orphans in Liberia, a construction of a church in Egypt, and the training of leaders in another church in Egypt. As you celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus for you, consider how you might sacrifice for these ministries. Cash or checks made payable to Tenth Presbyterian Church with April Project of the Month on the memo line, may be placed in offering plates or one of the oak boxes at the Sanctuary entrances.

7 TENTH PRESS APRIL 9, 2017 Passion and Resurrection: Good Friday and Easter at Tenth by Colin Howland, Music Director The immeasurable significance of Holy Week is perhaps best attested by the amount of space given to recording its events in the gospels. From the total of 89 chapters in the four gospel accounts, 29 chapters are devoted to describing what Jesus said and did from Palm Sunday to Easter. Not only this, but each gospel is composed so the reader can clearly understand that there is an inexorable movement in Jesus life toward the cross and the empty tomb. For example, Matthew s gospel reads this way, From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised (Matthew 16:21). Luke 9:51 says Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem. John s gospel refers repeatedly to Jesus hour, pointing ahead to his death and the glory which would be manifested. This movement toward the death and resurrection of Jesus in the gospels mirrors similar patterns found throughout the Old Testament. Many of these Old Testament patterns may be found simply by asking questions in response to the situations recorded. Who is the seed of the woman who will crush the head of the seed of the serpent in Genesis 3:15? Where is the lamb for the burnt offering that God will supply in Genesis 22:7? Who is the descendant of David who will rule on his throne forever? Who is the Servant of the Lord in Isaiah 53 who is despised and rejected, a man of sorrows? Even as the Old Testament anticipates Jesus passion and resurrection, the New Testament books after the gospels work out the implications of Christ s crucifixion and rising again. One example is Romans 6:8 11 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Many other instances could be quoted. This emphasis in Scripture on the death and resurrection has profound implications for us as disciples of Jesus Christ. Here are just a few. First, by this means are we saved from our sin and the wrath of God. Romans 10:9 says, If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Second, our lives are to have a cruciform pattern. Jesus said, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Matthew 16:24). Third, our future is based on Christ s accomplishment: If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:19 22). Lastly, Christ s death and resurrection shapes our worship of God: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!... To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever! (Romans 5:12 13). So, what is the purpose of the special services and concerts at Tenth on Good Friday and Easter? The author of Hebrews tells us: Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:1 2). Let us look and worship!

11 TENTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN APRIL 9, 2017 In Christ through All Generations by the Capital Campaign Committee In Christ through All Generations: that s the title of Tenth s upcoming capital campaign, set to launch on April 30. We begin with Christ. We strive to put him first in everything that we do. In him is life, and in him is hope for us, for our nation, and for our world. While this campaign will fund the acquisition and renovation of the 1710 Ministry Center, we recognize that the building is of no consequence except as a means to serve Christ. The Bible often speaks about generations, and at Tenth we are keenly attuned to the centrality of God s faithfulness to all generations. Indeed, our 175th anniversary celebrated exactly that how God is Faithful to All Generations. It was from the vision cast on this anniversary more than a decade ago that ultimately led to the acquisition of the 1710 Ministry Center. God has truly been faithful to the many generations of Tenth Church. It is not enough to recognize God s faithfulness to us in the past; true faith believes that God will be faithful in the future, even when his plan is not clear to us. This deep, abiding faith galvanizes us to make good on the debt of gratitude that we owe to the faithful generations of the past, while also making good on our obligations to the generations to come. We must advance the gospel today, both to build on the faithful service of generations past and to prepare the way for generations to come. Tenth is home to many different generations of God s people, and so is the 1710 Ministry Center. On any given Sunday, dozens of toddlers play in our nursery, college students from a number of campuses join together in Tenth College Fellowship, and dozens more adults are present in our Adult Sunday School classes. And that s only Sunday morning. During the week the building serves as the focus of our outreach to the community. In short, God has blessed us tremendously. Our ministries have been growing without enough space to accommodate them. God had a plan for this. While we were praying, God was working. Then, finally, the building next door became available, at a time when we least expected it and when we were least able to purchase it. But we acted in faith, believing that our many prayers had been answered and that God was pushing us along the road into the future he has for us. Now it is time to raise the necessary funds to pay for the 1710 Ministry Center for generations past, the generations of today, and for generations to come. On April 30, we will launch this three-year, $3 million capital campaign to fund the acquisition and renovation of our new 1710 Ministry Center, which will enable us to better proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Rest assured, this is not the last time you will be hearing from us. This is not a campaign by a few people, for a few people. This is churchwide effort, with a churchwide impact. In the coming weeks, you will receive further details about the capital campaign by and through the mail. I hope that you will prayerfully consider the role that you can play in making this campaign a success.
