3 Offertory: The Lord s My Shepherd Bob Chilcott The Lord s my Shepherd, I ll not want. He makes me down to lie in pastures green: He leadeth me the quiet waters by. My soul He doth restore again; And me to walk doth make within the paths of righteousness, e en for His own name s sake. Yea, though I walk through death s dark vale, yet will I fear no ill: For Thou art with me and Thy rod and staff me comfort still. My table Thou hast furnished in presence of my foes; my head Thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my life shall surely follow me: And in my Father s house alway my dwelling place shall be. Brigida Altamirano, soprano Scripture Reading John 11:55 12:11 (page 898) Sermon: Extravagant Generosity Prayer * Hymn: In Christ Alone (please sing these lyrics) Getty/Townend In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save: Til on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the pow r of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow r of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand; Til He returns or calls me home, here in the pow r of Christ I ll stand! * Benediction Postlude: Fantasy: Easter Hymn William Harris P R O J E C T O F T H E M O N T H : E A S T E R S A C R I F I C I A L O F F E R I N G Every year as we gratefully remember and celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus, we at Tenth Church respond by sacrificially contributing to this special offering. The Easter Sacrificial Offering (ESO) is a ministry of Global Outreach and supports international and cross-cultural ministry over and beyond our designated budget. This year, ESO will support several ministries, including a school for Syrian refugees, eye surgeries for the underprivilged Ethiopians, orphans in Liberia, a construction of a church in Egypt, and the training of leaders in another church in Egypt. As you celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus for you, consider how you might sacrifice for these ministries. Cash or checks made payable to Tenth Presbyterian Church with April Project of the Month on the memo line, may be placed in offering plates or one of the oak boxes at the Sanctuary entrances. * Congregation standing

6 TENTH PRESS APRIL 23, 2017 Global Outreach Weekend: Ancient Vision. Modern Mission. by David Gunther, Global Outreach Commission Member, and Shannon Johnston, Global Outreach Assistant In just two weeks, on May 6 7, the Global Outreach Commission will be hosting our second annual spring GO Weekend. The theme of this weekend is Ancient Vision. Modern Mission. This weekend will give all of us opportunities to reflect on the calling God has given to the Church and consider what that might look for us today. Several Tenth Global Partners will be joining us to lead us in worship, share their experiences, tell us how God is moving in their respective fields, and challenge us on how we engage the work of the gospel. Craig Chapin, from Nagoya, Japan, will be preaching from Isaiah 66 in the 9 and 11 AM services. Pastor John, who serves in the Middle East, will be challenging us on the Mission of Prayer at the 6:15 PM service. Matt, one of our partners in West Africa, will be sharing at a luncheon on Sunday regarding his experience in medical outreach. One of our U.S. based partners, Anees, will be updating us on his work among Muslims. Steve from South Asia will also be joining us for the prayer breakfast on Saturday, May 6. We hope that through this weekend you will be encouraged by the stories of what God is doing around the world. We hope that you will be challenged to think of and view missions in a new way. We hope that you will be inspired and convicted to be more involved in the growth of the Kingdom, especially as it is applied cross-culturally. We pray that the reminders of God s ancient call of the church to missions will encourage you to become more involved in the modern mission of spreading the gospel. While many Tenth members have caught a vision calling them to leave Philadelphia and serve in other parts of the world, you can also participate in missions right here. 1. You can pray for the worldwide church, unreached people, and our global partners. 2. You can give. Tenth s global outreach budget provides ongoing support to partners and ministries in almost every part of the world. Our annual Easter Sacrificial Offering supports projects offering mercy and relief to those in great need. Additionally, many in the church feel called to directly support different global partners and ministries. 3. You can send. Both Maranatha and the Global Outreach Commission send out short-term missions teams. These teams need prayer and logistical support in addition to financial support. To learn more about supporting the work of a Tenth missions team please contact Dora at dphan@ tenth.org for Maranatha or sjohnston@tenth.org for GOC trips. 4. You can serve with the Global Outreach Commission. If you are interested, please contact Tenth s Global Outreach Assistant, Shannon at sjohnston@tenth.org. 5. You can help and encourage our far-flung global partners who have landed stateside for a period of time. For opportunities to connect with, help, and encourage specific partners, please contact Laura Layer at llynnlayer@cavtel.net. 6. You can be involved in ministry to internationals in Philadelphia. Throughout the Bible and church history, we see that the kingdom often moves right along with people on the move refugees, immigrants, students, and business people. To become involved with tutoring internationals in English or Tenth International Fellowship, please contact Enrique Leal at eleal@tenth.org. The thought of cross-cultural ministry can be daunting, not to mention the actual doing of it. As you hear about God s Ancient Vision of his followers to missions, be heartened by the stories from our global partners and prayerfully consider your Modern Mission. Let s all be encouraged and challenged by these words from Tim Keller: You can do this ministry with God s help so give it all you ve got. You can t do this ministry without God s help so be at peace (Center Church: Doing Balanced, Gospel-Centered Ministry in Your City).

10 TENTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN APRIL 23, 2017 The 1710 Spruce Ministry Center Story by the Capital Campaign Committee The title of Tenth s set-to-launch capital campaign is In Christ through All Generations. We earnestly believe that this captures the essence of not only this project, but also of the mission of our church. God has already been faithful to many generations of Tenth, and we believe that his provision of 1710 Spruce is an answer to years of prayer and a blessing to the current and future generations of our church. The 1710 Spruce Ministry Center capital campaign is the realization of a long-held vision of additional space to minister to the needs of our congregation and community. In 2008, with the This People, This Place, This Time campaign, Tenth established a fund to provide for preliminary costs of appraisals and structural analysis, should a nearby building become available. Concurrently the church maintained a watch list of properties in the neighborhood with 1710 rising to the top for its convenient next-door location. The property included a carriage house, which shares a wall with our nursery and represented the only way Tenth could physically enlarge its freestanding footprint. The building that fronts on Spruce Street offered an array of beautiful, well-appointed offices and conference rooms needed to match the needs of our congregation. But opportunities to acquire the building had passed, and it seemed like it was not to be. The church moved forward, instead, with the purchase of 1716 Spruce another property that had been on the watch list. In February 2014, just as the committee was poised to begin planning how best to use the 1716 building, Tenth unexpectedly received word that the owners of 1710 Spruce were ready to sell. In some ways, the timing seemed impeccable. We had not yet invested in renovating Chairman Frank Harder suggested the committee pause those discussions and begin prayerfully to consider the new opportunity. Wanting to keep the congregation abreast, committee members joined at the spring 2014 parish meetings to talk about the prospect of acquiring 1710 Spruce, and especially, to invite prayer. Over 100 people responded to that call, committing themselves to pray regularly that if God wanted Tenth to have the building, he would make it plain and make the property affordable. This band of Gideon began receiving monthly updates and praying regularly about this effort (as they continue to do today). The proposal to purchase 1710 Spruce was approved by the Session in November 2014 and by the congregation in January Spruce was in excellent condition when purchased. The previous owners rented the property from Tenth Church until the fall of is a double-lot row house with four floors and a basement. Since its purchase, the church has sought to exercise good stewardship over the property. The first floor and a number of the meeting rooms were put to immediate use. The large conference room has proved uniquely valuable as a medium-sized space for classes and meetings. It has also been invaluable as a second space in which a Sunday fellowship meal can be served relieving serious scheduling pressure on Fellowship Hall. In addition, the church has made 1710 our home base for outreach activity. The metro outreach staff moved their offices to the front of the first and second floors this fall, and our resident interns moved from their apartments in 1716 Spruce to the top two floors of 1710 in January As we prepare to officially launch this capital campaign, it is our hope that you would prayerfully consider how you might help contribute to the success of this project. God has provided a wonderful building for us right next door. We must be good stewards of what He has given us, and make wise decisions for the sake of His Kingdom.
