PROJECT OF THE MONTH: PASTORS CONFERENCE IN THAILAND Global partner Boon Chu works among the Karen people. Ninety percent are farmers living in mountain villages so remote they are often only accessible by foot or dirt bike. The gospel is reaching many of these villages for the first time and their pastors, all untrained lay leaders, are eager for Bible teaching. Tenth has the opportunity to help sponsor a Bible conference in March. Many will walk two days to attend the conference but cannot afford the cost of meals and accommodations. A donation of $35 will cover the costs of one pastor. Cash or checks made payable to Tenth Presbyterian Church with February Project of the Month on the memo line, may be placed in offering plates or one of the oak boxes at the Sanctuary entrances. * Congregation standing

4 EVENING WORSHIP 6:15 PM Soli Deo Gloria Prelude Intermezzo in A Minor Op. 118, No. 1 J. Brahms Etude in A flat Major Op. 25, No. 1 F. Chopin And Can It Be That I Should Gain arr. F. Lopez And can it be that I should gain an int rest in the Savior s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? JordanLaurelle Gunderson, piano Soli Deo Gloria is a motto that has been used since the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is the culminating phrase of five Solas and means Glory to God Alone. Soli Deo Gloria affords musicians (singers and instrumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. At the same time, the music is intended to encourage the congregation and to be a public testimony of our desire at Tenth Church to honor Him with our musical offerings. 6:30 PM Welcome Call to Worship Invocation * Hymn 173: Praise Him! Praise Him! Joyful Song * Prayer of Confession Almighty God, to know You is the fulfilment of our deepest longings and satisfaction of our most ardent desires. Yet foolishly we have sought our pleasures elsewhere. We have put the seeking of idols, which are bound to leave us feeling empty, above seeking You. We have failed to love You with all our heart, soul, and mind. We have failed to love our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive us for our sins and grant that from now on we might serve You in newness of life. We pray these things in the name of Your most precious son, Jesus Christ, Amen. * The Gospel s Assurance of Pardon Ephesians 2:6 8a God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. * Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 732) Tallis Canon (Children ages 4 and 5 may leave to attend their program.) 6 TENTH PRESS FEBRUARY 7, 2016 Relationships Are the Basis of Merciful Conversations (ACTS) By David S. Apple, Director of Mercy Ministries In 1968, The Kerner Commission published a report on racial conditions in this country. One of its conclusions was that there are two unequal Americas: one white, one black with the division becoming more and more unequal. The report pretty much said, Black lives don t matter. Today there is a growing awareness of this division and little movement toward reconciliation. Webster s Dictionary defines reconciliation as restoring to friendship and harmony, settling or resolving difference, and making consistent with what was meant to be. Most people who grew up in the 50 s and 60 s remember images of racial injustice, intolerance, and inhumanity: Rosa Parks daring to sit on a bus, police shooting fire hoses at people, governors barricading schools to keep non-white kids from attending. And there are the images in death of Emmett Till, Medgar Evers, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Today the images are Ferguson and Baltimore, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Freddie Grey, and Tamir Rice. The battles about whether Black lives matter are not only against racism and social and political injustice but against principalities and powers of evil. Recent speakers at Urbana (theme: What Stories Will You Tell?) addressed Black Lives Matter. The conference s sponsor, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, chose to participate in this conversation, saying, We believe that Christians have something distinctive to contribute [here] in order to advance the gospel. I intended to watch the conference videos online, but prior to that I listened to the Rev. Tom Skinner and his Urbana 1970 presentation. There he presented a history of American racism socially, ecclesiastically, and politically and said also that Black lives matter. Many were angry at Skinner for speaking so boldly. But he spoke the truth about the problem, but also the solution. Christ is the answer. Similarly, the 2015 speakers also shared what they believe to be truth. One prophetic speaker who is angry at recent police brutality said, Racism is an age-old idol. Tear it down. Justice is not to try, convict, and execute on the street. Many disagree with her, wondering as some did in 1970 whether a student missions conference is the place to address racial injustice. But prophetic voices are needed in times when injustice increases. Did not Old Testament prophets Amos and others speak out against injustice? There was one comment about pro-life issues that some thought over the top. The speaker expressed anger that many pro-lifers are concerned about abortion but not about the poor quality of life in impoverished communities: She said, they are too busy holding mercy from the living and giving it to the unborn which made others angry. But, there was this simple prayer: God wreck our hearts to haunt us. Challenge us. The speaker pleaded that we be challenged to see the injustice that continues to divide us into two (or more) Americas. She challenged us to come together, hear each other s stories and do something to address the parts of the body that hurt. Reach out to a neighbor and say, Whatever life is like in your shoes, I want to know about it. You don t think your life is important? Tell me more. We can t address what we don t talk about. Years ago, I facilitated Tenth s Reconcilers Fellowship. The hope was to create a diverse community and a safe place to dialogue. This church group consisted of someone who witnessed a lynching, another whose only contact with people of color was the help, one whose family had passed the brown paper bag test, two who grew up involved in protest marches, and one who wakens daily fearing the racism he will face, and others. But reconciliation can so easily be accomplished informally by having conversations in intentional relationships. I believe we must bridge the crosscultural and racial divide, gathering together to hear one another s stories at the foot of the cross. We may not understand another s viewpoint. But can t we suspend judgment and listen to their stories? Let s engage in dialogue. Learn. Empathize. Offer hope. Establish relationships. It can be done. Tom Skinner said, Racial reconciliation is whites and blacks doing surgery on each other. It requires sharing the truth, which is risky. But when we build trust and stay on the table to the end of the surgery there is hope for healing.
