This underserved community faces higher rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, yet many are uninsured or underinsured. Students will provide door-to-door health screens, share the gospel of Jesus Christ, and participate in Bible study and leadership training. The program will also send four SMI students to a Muslim country in Eastern Europe, July 15 28, to participate in a SMI program run by a local Christian health center. SMI is one of the projects run by Medical Campus Outreach, a discipleship ministry of Tenth Church to healthcare students and professionals in Philadelphia. 5 Offertory: What Wondrous Love Is This? arr. Evelyn Larter What wondrous love is this, O my soul? What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to brave the dreadful curse for my soul? When I was sinking down beneath God s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb I will sing; to God and to the Lamb, Who is the great I AM, while millions join the theme, I will sing. And when from death I m free, I ll sing on; and when from death I m free, I ll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I ll sing on. We are including in the bulletin a series of questions and answers dealing with some of the essential doctrines of our faith. Question 31: What is effectual calling? Answer: Effectual calling is the work of God s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel. * Congregation standing

6 TENTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN MARCH 4, 2018 Capital Campaign 2017 Report By Frank Harder, Capital Campaign Chair As a complement to our Living Church on February 25, we want to provide an update on our Capital Campaign and, in particular, the progress we have made toward its primary goal the using, configuring, and paying off our mortgage on 1710 Spruce. In 2015, we acquired 1710 Spruce Street for $4.1 million. During 2017, we paid down the mortgage by more than a million dollars. We also paid over $110,000 in interest. These payments allowed us to attach the carriage house to the main church building and open it up for unconditional use. We have also paid off the mortgage on 1716 Spruce Street in full. In 2017, we received capital campaign pledges of just over $1.0 million and giving of $292,000 against those pledges. We received another $239,000 in unpledged giving. Thank you for your generous support of this campaign. To date, the Building Committee has completed two major projects integral to the configuration of the property for our use. (1) The carriage house has been configured for small children and serves as a nursery space on Sundays and houses a preschool during the week. (2) Intern housing has been created on the third and fourth floors of We prioritized these two projects in order to enable the lease of our other Spruce Street property. We will continue to work on the second floor and basement of the 1710 Spruce Street Ministry Center in order to create additional classroom space. With the right amount of rescheduling and reconfiguration, we expect that the Sunday uses at 315 S 17th Street can be folded into our main campus, giving us the option of rental or sale on that property as well. Some may already know that The City School is moving out of 315 S 17th Street at the end of this school year. In December, I informed the congregation that discussions were underway to rent 315 to the Classical School beginning in September. The ongoing viability of this option is being weighed at this time. The Building Committee is also at work planning the courtyard space between the church and An artist s concept of the courtyard is on display in Reception Hall. As it stands now, we are using the third and fourth floors of 1710 Spruce Street for intern housing and the second floor as office space for our outreach staff. We have also consistently put the large rooms on the first floor to good use. At some point, the second floor will likely be reconfigured to better serve the needs of our Adult Sunday School. In the longer term, we plan to reconfigure the remaining usable spaces in 1710, including the kitchen, to better serve the needs of the congregation. Please pray for the capital campaign committee, trustees, and elders as we consider a property management strategy ahead of our mortgage refinancing in PRELIMINARY YEAR END CAPITAL FUND FINANCIAL REPORT Sources and Uses of Cash Cash on Hand 12/31/2016 $1,182,911 Income during ,275 Sources of Cash 1,732,186 Expenses through 12/31/ expenses 72,472 (Intern quarters plus tax, campaign and legal expenses) Mortgage pay down 1,057,819 Interest 111,300 Total Cash Use 1,241,591 Capital Campaign Balance 12/31/ ,595 Total Mortgage Balance 12/31/2017 $3,557,510

7 TENTH PRESS MARCH 4, 2018 Incompetence and Promises By James Kurtz, Short-Term Taiwan Team Member Well, I think I m on the right boat... An unusual art piece hangs above my desk at home: a collection of nametags from most of the VBSs and kids camps in which I ve taken part. Every summer I had attended these things, until I started helping to run them. But as I took a seat at the back of the ferry, I thought of the inadequacy I had felt earlier in the week. The mere recollection was so uncomfortable, it left me unaware I had sat in a puddle. I thought I knew how to do this kind of ministry my first job was in children s ministry but that opening morning felt like I had never seen a child before. As we pushed away from the wharf, I brushed a few drops of water off my camera lens, uncertain if it had come from the bay or the mist. There hadn t been a sign to confirm our destination, and even if there were, I was illiterate in this country. But Google Maps had gotten me this far, and when it told me to get on a boat, I obeyed with the only boat I saw. My thoughts shifted to the later mornings of VBS, and how they weren t so disastrous. If anything, they had been miraculous in comparison. Despite the bumpy start to the week, the kids came back and even brought friends and siblings. As a startling surprise, those later days differed from expectations by exceeding them. The kids learned songs to sing to our Father and heard of his relentless love in seeking out both of his prodigal sons. These are the moments my soul sings the hope that we are not competent in ourselves, but our competence is from God, who has made us competent and worthy as ministers of the covenant (2 Corinthians 3:5 6). As the puddle on my seat soaked through my jeans, I clutched that hope of bestowed competence even tighter as I watched my intended destination disappear over the horizon. I was not on the right boat. Google had failed me. Prep for VBS had failed. The promises on which I leaned, however, had not. Throughout our time in the country, we had seen the certainty of our Father s promises. We sometimes talk about church in hard places, neglecting the bigger picture: hardness comes in finite quantities, and the Church will infinitely prosper. In the evenings, our team gathered in one such church probably smaller than Liam s office and provided the native English-speakers for an ESL Café. The church had never hosted such a thing, so we began with an abundance of apprehension, and, like VBS a few hours earlier, a shortage of prayer. But as the evening went on, the conversations were meaningful. Dialogues scaled topics like the nature of evil, the inconvenient necessity of sacrifice, and enduring punishments imposed for doing the right thing. As the boat neared an unknown pier in an unknown place, I began to wonder if I would make it back in time for those conversations this evening. I had ventured to the edge of the city to see the mouth of the river, collect my thoughts, and allow my off-the-charts introversion some recovery. Separated from the team, I hadn t planned a contingency for getting on the wrong boat. Walking up the dock, I heard someone speak in English. The language alone indicated that I was the intended recipient. What are you doing here? the voice inquired. It was that part of town, apparently. I gave the Twitter version of the explanation, passively mentioning it was a church thing. That piqued his interest, and after some discussion, I found that he was certainly not on the wrong boat. Formerly a pastor, having fled religious persecution on the mainland, our brief conversation reminded me yet again of the varying perspectives on hard, and the unwavering promises on which we depend. As we parted ways, I came to realize that in the broader view where God is sovereign, I was on the right boat after all. Unfortunately, I neglected to ask him for directions. If you d like to hear more about Tenth s short-term trip to Taipei last month, join us next Sunday after the 11 AM service. More information is at tenth.org/taipei. Though mildly stressful, I now recommend getting on the wrong boat on the other side of the world. Learn more about short-term trips at tenth.org/stt.
