Soli Deo Gloria affords musicians (singers and instrumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. 6 TENTH PRESS AUGUST 7, 2016 Interns By Gavin Lymberopoulos, Director of Metro Outreach McDonald s at 6:30 AM may seem like an odd time for ministry training and discipleship, but as a senior in high school I had questions about God. Thankfully, an older brother in the faith was willing to buy me a sausage biscuit and listen. For instance, one morning I wanted to know why God would harden Pharaoh s heart. Between bites, he would tell me that God is God so he can do whatever he wants. Later, he would simply affirm that I had good questions and that I should keep wrestling. I do not remember all of the answers he passed on, but I remember that he trusted God deeply. And of course, I remember that he took the time to get up early and talk about Jesus. Looking back, I see that he was just living out 2 Timothy 2:1 2, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. These verses outline two imperatives for Timothy from his mentor, Paul. First, find the strength you need in the grace of Christ Jesus. When fatigue and sorrow and confusion and sin slow you down, go to Christ; you will be strengthened. Second, Timothy is to take what Paul has taught him about gospel ministry and entrust it to faithful people who will be able to teach others. Timothy must not take the strength that he finds in Christ and keep it for himself, he must pass it on. He must entrust it to reliable individuals who are able to teach others. The goal is for the gospel to strengthen Timothy for the work of multiplying gospel workers who will also multiply gospel workers. Let me encourage you to join this process in four ways. First, pray that these interns would be strengthened by Christ. Second, say hello to them and introduce yourself. (They may only worship at Tenth for a few years, but we get the joy of encouraging them while they are here.) Third, pray for their current and future ministry of multiplying gospel workers. Fourth, when possible, invest in their lives. You may not know how to answer some of their questions, you may not even care about the things they are wrestling through, but you can encourage them that God is trustworthy. Incidentally, this culture of intentional encouragement is what we want throughout all of Tenth, not just in the development of future pastors. Pulsing through our parishes, individuals are meeting together over God s Word. Week after week small groups share prayer requests and encourage each other to keep following Christ. Parking in the Liberty Place garage is free only on Sundays. You will need to pick up chaser tickets in Reception Hall immediately after services (near water fountain after morning services, at nursery desk after evening services) you must show your garage ticket to receive one. Please park at Liberty to free up the streets for neighbors, bikers, and those with mobility issues. The garage has entrances between Market and Chestnut Streets on both 16th and 17th Streets. When using street parking on Spruce and Pine, please remember to use your mirrors and watch for bikers in the bike lane as you pull in and as you open your doors. 9 The library has recently added a shelf of books related to racial reconciliation and understanding donated by Dr. David Apple, director of Tenth s Mercy Ministry. The books are currently located in room C1 and can be identified by a yellow dot on the spine of the book. Tenth Playgroup is expanding its reach in our Center City neighborhood. Fresh volunteers are invited to join in this lively ministry which meets on alternating Wednesday mornings. And as we begin a new MOPS group for young mothers on Thursday mornings, there is a particular need for veteran mothers who will interact with our guests. Contact Crystal Hanrahan to learn more. Fellowship Bible Study needs people to help with set-up and serving of meals to our homeless guests most Sundays on a rotating basis. Time commitment is 4:45 6:15 PM. David Apple s book, Developing the Heart of a Servant, is completed and now in the hands of the publisher. Global partner Michael Cassidy s continued recovery from pneumonia and a good report on his lung biopsy. Providing the means for global partner Matt, who unexpectedly had to travel this week to South Asia to register for classes at the university. Pray for a smooth registration process and continued favor with the family s visa status. PRAY FOR JD and Kit Little and their family as they grieve the loss of their five-year-old son Stephen, who died tragically on July 31 while the family was on vacation.
