Kenneth Kemmerer A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great; and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. Processional on Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Martin Shaw/arr. James Hala Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is my health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near, join me in glad adoration. Westminster Brass Call to Worship * Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 731) Old Hundredth Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Confession Gracious Lord, we confess that we dishonor You in our thoughts, words, and deeds. Depending on our own strength, we stumble. Glorying in our own righteousness, we reject You. Turning our faces from You, we desire the things of this world to satisfy us. We pray now, Lord, for You to forgive all of our many sins; to cleanse the darkness from our lives, and to turn our faces and our hearts back to You. We pray these things in the name of Your most precious Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. * The Gospel s Assurance of Pardon * Invocation * Hymn 100: Holy, Holy, Holy! Nicaea Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession Announcements Sacrament of Baptism (11 AM only) Living Church Commissioning of Christian Education Volunteers * Hymn: Before the Throne of God Above (see lyrics) Vikki Cook (In the 11:00 service, Praisemakers, ages 4 5, may go to B2 B3; Praisemakers Plus, grades 1 2, may go to B3.) Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea, A great High Priest Whose name is Love, Who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on His hands, my name is written on His heart; I know that while in heav n He stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart, No tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within, Upward I look and see Him there, Who made an end to all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free, For God the just is satisfied to look on Him and pardon me, To look on Him and pardon me. 4 E V E N I N G W O R S H I P 6 : 1 5 P M Soli Deo Gloria Prelude Hymn Sing Hymns will be selected by the congregation. Soli Deo Gloria is a motto that has been used since the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is the culminating phrase of five Solas and means Glory to God Alone. Soli Deo Gloria affords musicians (singers and instrumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. At the same time, the music is intended to encourage the congregation and to be a public testimony of our desire at Tenth Church to honor Him with our musical offerings. 6 : 3 0 P M Welcome Call to Worship Invocation * Hymn 83: O Praise the Lord, for He Is Good Richmond * Prayer of Confession Our God and our Father, we have sinned against You. In our thoughts, words and deeds we have dishonored You and brought Your holy name into disrepute. We have deliberately and willfully disobeyed You. What wretched people we are, deserving Your righteous condemnation. O Father, have mercy upon us. Do not treat us according to our iniquities, but deal with us according to the perfect merits of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in Whom all of the condemning power of the law s accusations has been fully exhausted. Forgive us for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior, in Whose name we pray. Amen. * The Gospel s Assurance of Pardon 1 Peter 2:9 10 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. * Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 733) Lasst Uns Erfreuen (Catechism Club may leave to attend their program.) 5 Offertory: God, We Praise You! arr. Jack Schrader God, we praise you! God, we bless you! God, we name you Sovereign Lord! Mighty King Whom angels worship. Father, by your church adored: all creation shows your glory, heav n and earth draw near your throne singing Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts and God alone! True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. Jesus Christ, the King of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod. By your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven open to believers, sinners justified by grace. Christ, at God s right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid: raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray. God, we praise you! God, we bless you! God, we name you Sovereign Lord! Their vision for the school is to support this growing community by instilling Christ-centered values in the children while maintaining academic excellence. 6 TENTH PRESS SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 Tenth Presbyterian Church Music Ministries: Equipping Christian Disciples to Sing God s Praise By Colin Howland, Director of Music and Organist Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Psalm 100:2. Music has a vital role in the life of Tenth Presbyterian Church. We use vocal and instrumental music to worship God together, to grow in the Christian faith, and to give witness of that faith to the world. The Bible clearly portrays God s people as a singing people. In joy and sorrow, in sickness and health, singing to God accompanies the Christian s life. Noted theologians such as Augustine and Calvin have noted the close relationship of singing and prayer. Both spoke of two kinds of prayer, those which are spoken and those which are sung. And yet, I have often met Christians who have a fear of singing, or at least being heard! I have known many people who pray boldly in spoken prayer yet don t know the joy of practicing sung prayer. I have also known it to work the other way round. Perhaps there are those who are confident musicians and have no problem singing prayers boldly in the midst of or even in front of others. Yet when asked to pray in front of a group, they shrink back into timidity. Now I think it is safe to say that the one thing we all have in common is this: we all still have much to learn about spoken and sung prayer! We all could put these things into better practice. The Music Ministries of Tenth Presbyterian Church are focused on the worship of God, the growth of Christian disciples, and the witness of the gospel to the world. To that end, one of our great desires is to encourage and help people of all ages in their prayer lives, both spoken and sung. This encouragement and discipleship happens in groups called choirs, not so musical members of the congregation can be singled out for their talent, but that together we may learn to worship and sing God s praise. Singing should be one of the most delightful parts of the Christian s life, yet for far too many it is something which they take only halfheartedly. Choirs are places where we can strengthen and learn from one another as we together seek to sing God s praise. As with many disciplines, the best way to begin is to start young! Tenth Children s and Youth Music is providing the following opportunities this year. Please contact Joseph Waggoner for details: jwaggoner@tenth. org. Praisemakers Pre-K music program for ages 4 5. They sing weekly in the evening service, meeting at 5:15 PM for a pre-service rehearsal beginning tonight. They also sing for the Reformation Hymn Festival, the Lessons and Carols Services, the Good Friday Concert, and occasional Sunday morning services. By God s grace, we want Tenth Presbyterian Church to be a place where men and women, boys and girls love to sing God s praise. Please pray to that end.

10 TENTH GIVING Tenth carries out its gospel-centered mission of proclaiming God s truth to those of us near and far away through servants who are worthy of their hire in their faithful work. Tenth s funds support those servants and cover other expenses (for our church ministries as well as maintenance, utilities, etc.) that keep the gospel work going, while we seek to create space for future gospel work through the Capital Campaign. Our combined Church Ministry Fund and Outreach Fund budgets call for 2017 combined giving of $3,047,430. To date, our giving is significantly below amounts needed for this time of year. Seasonallyadjusted projections suggest a year-end gap of over $200,000 in those two funds; without seasonal adjustments, projections are far more concerning. In addition, the Building Fund totals shown on the previous page also are well below budget, affecting needed larger repairs, like exterior painting and renovations, such as the long-desired upgrade for Fellowship Hall. Please join Tenth s Elders and Trustees as we re-commit ourselves to prayer and consider sacrificial giving toward our ongoing ministry for the gospel in Philadelphia and around the world.

11 TENTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 First Fruits Tenth College Fellowship By Sebastian van Oudenallen and Oliver Pierce (TCF interns) and Carter Skeel (Capital Campaign Committee member) By the end of September, more than 75,000 young adults will be converging on Philadelphia universities. As a church, we eagerly anticipate their arrival and the opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with them. Indeed, we have already begun to welcome these new and returning students at the University of Pennsylvania through a variety of events during their new student orientation. One of our events garnered over 200 people! Of the four interns working with Penn students, three are Penn alumni. They are intimately familiar with Penn its campus, its culture, and its challenges. In the coming year, they will continue to cultivate lasting relationships with students they already know, while forging new ones with students they do not yet know. Penn Students for Christ, as Tenth s ministry to Penn will be named, is in good hands. In just a few short weeks, thousands of Drexel students will descend on University City. We plan to engage these students in similar ways and build upon the foundation we have laid for Drexel Students for Christ, the ministry we have on that campus. These campus groups are vital to the work of Tenth College Fellowship. But we recognize and earnestly seek to convey to the students we serve that such groups are no replacement for a church. Too often, students are energized by joining together with similarly-aged peers in campus groups, and lose sight of the importance of joining and serving in a local church. It is for precisely this reason that Tenth College Fellowship hosts a weekly Sunday school class where students from every Philadelphia area college campus come together. It is also for this reason that TCF actively encourages and facilitates deeper engagement from these college students in the work of the broader church body. The 1710 Spruce Street Ministry Center is integral to the success of this work. It provides a suitable meeting space for TCF s Sunday morning class and for the social events that bring together college students on other days of the week. It is a place for students to find encouragement, wrestle with the ongoing challenges they face as Christian students on secular campuses, and tackle the big questions of faith. It is also where our TCF interns live. It is where they fellowship with each other, encourage each other, and plan for the success of the ministry they support. Their residence within the walls of the church is a strong signal to the college students they engage with that you can be a Christian in college and beyond. More than that, one can grow and be strengthened in the faith, despite a surrounding hostile environment. We have big plans for Tenth College Fellowship. With prayer and discernment, we know that God will change those plans, and it is our prayer that we would be receptive to his guidance. TCF is a burgeoning ministry, and it is a tremendous blessing to have a building that not only accommodates, but also enhances and amplifies our work. We hope you see, as we do, the fruit that the 1710 Spruce Street Ministry Center has already produced in our midst. We hope that this fruit is an encouragement to you, and that it will incite you to engage more fully in the work that lies before us. We earnestly ask that you pray for, and, if you feel called, give to our capital campaign, In Christ Through All Generations. Please join us as we continue to witness the great blessings God has prepared for us at Tenth Presbyterian Church.
