Laudermilch Westminster Brass Dr. Jeffrey Jue is Provost and Executive Vice President, Associate Professor of Church History, and holds the Stephen Tong Chair of Reformed Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary. He is a graduate of the University of California at Irvine (BA, 1994), Westminster Seminary California (MDiv, 1998), and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (PhD, 2003). Ordained as a Teaching Elder in the PCA, he and his family attend Tenth Presbyterian Church. P R O J E C T O F T H E M O N T H Maranatha Missions This summer over 70 Maranatha students and leaders will participate in four different short-term missions teams, partnering with the following groups: The City School, with a team of 10 from Northern Ireland, to run a twoweek summer camp for 250 1st 8th grade students; Anna Matej in Buffalo, New York, with various churches and ministries to support urban farming and community development; Northeast Community Church, to run a twoweek-long VBS for elementary students; and ministries in Palo Alto, Dominican Republic, where we will hopefully complete the building of a retreat center, continue to lay cement floors for homes, and run a week-long VBS with the church. Our theme this summer is taken from Matthew 5:16, Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. The Lord is already at work in all of our partners, and Maranatha desires to support and be part of the ongoing proclamation of God s Kingdom and the work of his Spirit in each of these ministries. Bach Gretchen Hull, piano Soli Deo Gloria is a motto that has been used since the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is the culminating phrase of five Solas and means Glory to God Alone. Recognizing that all glory belongs to God and that we, even at our best, are but instruments of His grace, is the true, Christian world-life view. Such was the perspective of the great church musician Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), who regularly began his compositional work, whether sacred or secular, by writing JJ (Jesu, juva Jesus, help me ) on the first page of a manuscript and sdg at the end. Since 1995 we have employed this phrase as the title of our fifteen-minute musical prelude to evening worship. SDG affords musicians (singers and instrumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. At the same time, the music is intended to encourage the congregation and to be a public testimony of our desire as musicians to honor Him with our musical offerings. This even extends past vocal music with sacred text to the untexted beauty of instrumental music, which can also be offered to the glory of God. Through the doctrine of common grace, such music demonstrates for us not only the skill of the player, but also the creative genius with which God has endowed so many composers, whether or not they were conscious of this gift or were intentional in their use of it for His glory. 6 TENTH PRESS JUNE 7, 2015 Wide Open World By Terri Taylor, Global Outreach Project Leader I smiled when I saw the message in my inbox. This was an I d been wanting all year. It came from African Enterprise in Malawi. I sped through the note and clicked on the attachment. Photos spilled out. In them, African men with suits and ties stand smiling. Officials exchange ceremonious handshakes. Students dressed in school uniforms sit attentively on the ground watching. Some pictures show men giving speeches, and others show them lined up to inspect the new building: a bathroom for the Phereni Primary School. If you hear a whoop and holler from the Catacombs tonight, it will be WOW kids rejoicing. You see, heavy rains had made the previous mud brick outhouse collapse, leaving the 580 students who attend Phereni with literally nowhere to go. Worse, the 240 girls had no way to relieve themselves; many had just dropped out of school. Without a bathroom, the girls couldn t get an education. For them, the Bible would have always been just squiggles on a page, so last summer the kids in WOW took on raising funds for the bathroom, partnering with fourth graders in Brussels to meet the goal. Malawi has the distinction of being the poorest country in the world. Scarce money means getting the bathroom rebuilt was a really big deal so big that a member of Parliament participated in the ceremony. His presence there was connected to what the kids at Tenth did. Wow! If you re new to Tenth, you might not know about WOW that s our nickname for Wide Open World, our summer evening program that exposes kids to God s work around the world. Tonight we begin our tenth year of WOW and welcome children pre-k through grade 6. We start with singing but not the songs from Schola Cantorum or even the Trinity Hymnal. Instead we sing in Urdu, in Hebrew, in Twi, worshipping God with choruses learned from brothers and sisters elsewhere in the world. The program that follows combines age-segregated classes with large group assemblies where we hear firsthand reports from visiting global partners. They tell about people hearing of Jesus for the first time, about desperate prayers and God s answers, and about what it s like to follow Jesus in places where church is illegal. We want kids to come away convinced That God hears and answers prayer That God is actively drawing people from other religious traditions to himself That people and cultures are being transformed through the work of Jesus Christ In short, we want them to know that God is doing something through Jesus in the world right now. The awareness of his active presence will give them confidence that Christianity is more than just a good story. And the only way to communicate that is to expose them to the testimony of real people who are staking their very lives on following Christ and who are finding him faithful. This summer we will hear testimonies from partners working in Turkey, Kurdistan, China, India, and the Persian Gulf. We ll also have the joy of sending the Kempen kids and their parents off to Ethiopia, and a former WOW leader to the Middle East. But the Kempen kids won t be the only ones with passports. We ll be issuing them tonight to every kid who comes to WOW, and over the summer they ll earn passport stamps by doing special things like reading missionary biographies, memorizing verses about God s heart for the nations, or learning about other cultures. Generous donors insure that each passport stamp earns a dollar contribution to our special summer project like last year s toilet for the primary school in Malawi. Over the years the projects have ranged from kids Bible clubs in rural Egypt, to mattresses for orphans in Liberia, to Bibles in Urdu for Pakistani children, to a bakery oven for the children s home in Colombia. This year we ll be aiding refugee children from Syria. It s astounding when you think about it: God uses those kids rushing down the stairs on a summer evening to do significant things. Really that s part of what we want kids to understand: God is at work in the world. He is the one bringing salvation, but he is pleased to use us for bit parts. Like the boy with the lunch of fish and bread, we obediently bring our humble offering to Jesus, and he blesses and multiplies it. Wow!

When using street parking on Spruce and Pine, please remember to use your mirrors and watch for bikers in the bike lane as you pull in and as you open your doors. The discounted parking rate for churches is $6 at the Penn Garage (1700 South Street); please stamp your ticket in the Narthex or Delancey lobby. People on the street often request money from our attendees. Most service providers say those requesting money would be the first to admit they ll use it for drugs or alcohol. When asked say, I m sorry. I m not able to do that and give them a printed invitation to Sunday s Fellowship Bible Study or Community Dinner. These small yellow or blue cards are available in both lobbies. Large print bulletins and hymns are available in the narthex they are in white binders. Hearing assistance devices and large print Bibles are also available nearby. Please return all of these to the same location after use. An American Sign Language interpreter is present at evening services at the sanctuary front (18th Street side). Today all Adult Bible School classes meet in Catacombs Assembly Hall at 9:00 for our quarterly Day of Prayer. Please come and pray for our church and for its ministry. Bible School graduation for ages 3 through grade 12 is today at 9:00 AM in Fellowship Hall. Each department will present a song or memory passage they have learned, and we will recognize graduates and all those who have completed memory work.
