7 TENTH PRESS JUNE 4, 2017 Reflections from Our High School Graduates Collected by Dora Phan, Director of Maranatha Vicky D I have always enjoyed Maranatha s retreats, and this year was no exception. The speaker for the Senior High Retreat this year was Mr. Kenyatta Rush. He talked about joy and how to have joy in difficult situations. At the time I was in the middle of my college search and was really unsure of what school I was going to attend and whether or not we were going to be able to afford it. I was also stressing about how things would go once I got to college, meeting people, attending classes, and things like that. Nothing was looking the way I expected it to. Mr Rush s talks about how to have joy in hard times really spoke to me. The most important thing that spoke to me in his talks was that God is still in control of the situation and will provide for me in ways I won t expect, even if I don t see it until later on. Because of this truth, I am now more able to trust in God and have joy in the situations he puts me in. Christina N The Lord has been teaching me to trust in him with my future. All throughout high school I had no idea where I wanted to attend college, let alone what I wanted to major in or what kind of career I wanted. Even throughout my senior year it was still unclear I applied to ten colleges, hoping and trusting that the Lord would guide me in the right direction. And he did! He made it clear to me that I should attend the Coast Guard Academy and pursue a career serving and helping others. Even though I am scared and nervous for what is to come, I know that the Lord is guiding me where he wants me to go. were willful. I wanted to do what I wanted in those moments. Logically this doesn t make sense. I was born with a sense of right and wrong, so why willfully do things that are wrong? Things that I know will hurt my relationships with people? Things that will hurt me and my relationship with God? Things that will fill me with guilt and my parents with disappointment? I do them because I m a sinner, corrupted to the core. I deserve to die for everything I ve done, but God loves me too much to just let me go, to treat me like a lost cause. He calls to me, pulls me to him, determined to save me from myself. I don t deserve such care, such love, such sacrifice. Yet my creator and heavenly father father, not guardian or ruler or overseer, but father gave them to me anyway. His own Son perished in agony for my sake, for my soul. If there s one thing I ve learned this year, even if it s just been a reinforced lesson, it s this there is no greater or more precious gift than salvation. Jacob F During this past year the Lord taught me the importance of seeking wisdom from those who are older and wiser than I am. I always knew that those placed in positions above me like my parents were wiser than myself, but I tended to push away their wisdom with not wanting to be challenged or criticized. As Proverbs 1:7 says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and knowledge. It is imperative for me to seek and respect wisdom from those placed above me, always acknowledging my own ignorance as well as remaining humble. Martha Grace S Throughout my senior year, God has shown me over and over again the true nature of my existence. I am a sinner, rebelling against everything and everyone except for my own desires. I think back on certain moments, certain choices that I made, and realize that my acts of disobedience, of nastiness, of immorality all of them

Each department will present a song or memory passage they have learned, and we will recognize graduates and all those who have completed memory work. Tenth College Fellowship s class meets in 1710 Spruce, large conference room, 9:30 AM, for breakfast and study. They are studying a series on social justice what the Bible teaches on such topics as immigration, racial reconciliation, and mercy ministry. The church library is open 10:25 10:55 AM in C1 and C4. OPERATIONS The PECO project to install several new underground transformers under the Spruce Street sidewalk outside the main entrance of our church is now underway. There will be room for the usual handicap parking on Spruce Street; there will be a path for pedestrian traffic along the curb the length of the sidewalk; there will also be access into our handicap alley and the 18th Street door; and we will have access on the 17th Street half of the Spruce Street front to the steps and into the sanctuary. This project, weather permitting, will take four weeks. We will send a further update next week. 11 TENTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN JUNE 4, 2017 First Fruits Internationals Outreach By the Capital Campaign Committee For over sixty years, Tenth Internationals Outreach (IO) has existed to reach residents of Philadelphia from around the world with the good news of the gospel while providing an opportunity for fellowship and family. For a ministry that connects with people who are far from home and may come from countries where it is not safe to openly practice Christianity, the value of a good meeting space is high. The 1710 Spruce Street Ministry Center is already providing just such a space for IO. Over 20 different countries and 15 different languages are represented at large IO gatherings. In the space on the first floor of the new building, IO meets for a weekly Wednesday evening Bible study and a monthly Saturday evening ESL Bible study. From hot pot to tacos to BBQ, our international brothers and sisters share meals and fellowship, fostering a vibrant and diverse community. The leadership of IO, including director Enrique Leal, has moved office space into the second floor of the 1710 Spruce Street Ministry Center. Enrique feels that this relocation has helped IO collaborate with other ministries of Tenth, including the student and young adult ministries, writing: Our offices are now together in the same building on the same floor, and this has helped us to brainstorm about ideas of how we can improve our ministries, have more interaction between ministries, and help each other. Enrique s new office is about two and a half times larger than his original space, and this has allowed him to have a comfortable setting for one-to-one discipleship meetings and other small gatherings, which had been very difficult to schedule before. A Sunday membership class for people involved in IO also meets in his office space. The new building feels like home. This is especially important for IO, because for most of the people in the ministry, this is their family. Our time together is like a weekly family dinner for them. The new space has been very welcoming for them, Enrique shared. Recently, two visiting scholars have come to faith through IO. After attending the Wednesday night Bible Study and an IO retreat, they professed faith in Christ and are attending a membership class that meets in Enrique s office. This kind of thing could have happened without the new building, Enrique noted, but we are seeing the work of the Lord and his blessing in the new space already. As we come to the closing week of the pledge period for In Christ Through All Generations, the capital campaign for the support of the 1710 Spruce Street Ministry Center, we are reminded that while the new building is important, it is no more than a vessel for the Lord s work. We hope that you have considered how you might be a part of this campaign, but we also hope and pray that you consider how the Lord might work through you as a member of the Tenth Presbyterian Church community as we move forward in pursuit of his will for our church body. For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us (2 Corinthians 4:6 7). We like the building we are so grateful to have been given are mere vessels for God s purposes. Praise God that he has chosen to use us for his Kingdom work! Sola Deo Gloria.

See the parking areas listed on the placard. The main reduced-rate garage is between 17th and 18th on South Street. Parking lot tickets must be stamped in the Narthex or Delancey Lobby. Free parking is available on Sundays in the Liberty Place Garage (north of Chestnut Street, from 16th to 17th Street). Free chaser tickets are available in Reception Hall after services.
