Debussy Hannah Horine, piano Soli Deo Gloria is a motto that has been used since the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is the culminating phrase of five Solas and means Glory to God Alone. Recognizing that all glory belongs to God and that we, even at our best, are but instruments of His grace, is the true, Christian world-life view. Such was the perspective of the great church musician Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), who regularly began his compositional work, whether sacred or secular, by writing JJ (Jesu, juva Jesus, help me ) on the first page of a manuscript and sdg at the end. Since 1995 we have employed this phrase as the title of our fifteen-minute musical prelude to evening worship. SDG affords musicians (singers and instrumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. At the same time, the music is intended to encourage the congregation and to be a public testimony of our desire as musicians to honor Him with our musical offerings. This even extends past vocal music with sacred text to the untexted beauty of instrumental music, which can also be offered to the glory of God. Through the doctrine of common grace, such music demonstrates for us not only the skill of the player, but also the creative genius with which God has endowed so many composers, whether or not they were conscious of this gift or were intentional in their use of it for His glory. 7 TENTH PRESS JULY 6, 2014 My Testimony and Pilgrimage By Jerry McFarland The more I look back the more I see just how involved God has been in my life. Bev and I grew up a mile from each other in New Jersey, went to the same schools, and traveled in the same circle of friends. I grew up in a nominal Christian home, so when we started dating, I saw immediately that there was a serious disconnect in my understanding of what it meant to have a relationship with God. Her faith in Jesus was real and personal. She didn t shove it down my throat; she just lived it out in front of me. I started attending her church and youth group and found myself growing in my hunger to know God in the same way those around me knew him. The additional influence of Bev s family only made that hunger increase. After community college, I attended a Christian college at the advice of her pastor who was also a very significant influence in my life. That changed my life. It was there that the Lord sealed the work of Christ in my heart and my immediate desire was to spend my life serving him. We got married and spent the next ten years serving in Youth For Christ in Maryland. I love the youth culture. It s a time of excitement and a time for legitimate searching. I wanted to help young people who, like me, might be close yet so far from really understanding the love of God in Christ. I thought I would spend most of my life doing that kind of work. Yet during my last few years there I had a growing sense of a call to pastoral ministry. After some real soul searching and fear (I had been out of academics for ten years!) we moved our family to Philly, and I attended Westminster Seminary. Those four years were challenging but some of the most rewarding for my family and me in preparation for ministry in the church. I then spent the next nine years serving a PCA church near Annapolis. It was our home church where many of the teenagers I had previously ministered to were now members and growing in the Lord. My title was Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Encouragement. One of the Elders after a few years suggested they change my title to Pastor of Hanging Out! Again, I thought I would be there until my retirement but the Lord had other plans. I was called back to Westminster in 1995 to serve as Dean of Students. I had the opportunity to literally pastor future pastors to make sure these young men were growing in the grace as well as the knowledge of Jesus. Those twelve years were some of the richest experiences in ministry I ve ever had. My role quickly expanded as I interacted with the whole of the community, including staff and faculty. I knew I would retire there. Do you see the pattern?! During my last few years at WTS I had a growing burden for young senior pastors and wanted to find ways to mentor them. My desire was to do that work in Philly but God had other plans. How we ended up in North Carolina is a story worth telling and hearing but perhaps that is for another time. I would be remiss to not highlight one of the most constant blessings from God in my life. My wife and three children, (Meg, Mat, and Erin) have been used of the Lord to shape and sanctify me in ways for which I will be forever grateful. In an ever-changing world, to have a legacy of God s faithfulness in my marriage and the blessing of my children is a sweet gift I will carry to eternity. Now I look forward to the chance to come home. Only God knows how this local body of Christ has been used to sanctify me in life and service to our Lord. Tenth has been a significant blessing and to now have the opportunity to give back is a precious gift from God.
