6 This n That Have you ever wondered where the ELCA stands on certain issues? If you have, the Board of Directors after the annual budget meeting has decided to highlight one of the ELCA s social statements each month. This month we will be highlighting the ELCA s social statement entitled Abortion. You can find the social statement at this link or you may pick up a copy at church. If you have questions, our pastors are more than willing to engage in conversation. -The Board of Directors YOU DID IT YOU DID IT! Thank you to all who so generously contributed to the Chime System Challenge. Your monetary support will ensure that Faith Lutheran Church and the surrounding community will once again hear the Joyful Noise for another quarter century. The Board of Lay Ministry Attention all members of Faith interested in worship planning! Depending on the response, this may become an opportunity 2-4 times annually. The team will meet following the worship service on January 15 th and/or January 22 nd in the sanctuary. 7 Scrip Update/Adult Forum/Bus Trip Thank you to all those who purchased scrip during the holiday season. We tried to have in stock items you normally buy. However, it was great that you preordered so you were able to get exactly what you wanted. On the desk at the information center, you will find an alphabetical list of vendors and the amount the cards can be purchased for. Please keep in mind some cards only come in $25 and $100 values, so check that list out. You will find in the pew rack a bright pink order slip to help you make your selections. During the month of November we had 44 families purchase 255 scrip cards at a face value of $10,200 giving Faith a rebate of $ Stacy Wilker was the winner of a $10 gift card. The December sales will be listed next month. We are still in need of someone who might like to be trained to help on Monday mornings in ordering cards. It is good to have several people knowledgeable in this area when others go on vacations or are ill. Please consider this as a God Given Talent that you can share with your Faith congregation. Please call the office if you are interested. Thank you in advance. The Scrip Committee Thank you to everyone that helped make the tree skirts for our homebound members. They turned out great and it was so much fun watching how creative everyone is. Thanks to the adults who helped out, I couldn t have done it without you!!!!!! Nicolle Behnke Adult Forum For the past 9 weeks we have been following the journey of the Israelites as they fled slavery in Egypt on their way to the Promised Land. We followed their journey led by God's chosen leaders including Moses, Joshua, Gideon, and Samson. We are using The Story which tells the grandest, most compelling story of all time. This is a story about a true God who loves his children and established for them a way of salvation and provided a route to eternity. The 31 chapters reveals the God of grace, the God whose love for his people culminated in his sacrifice of Jesus to atone for the sins of all humanity. This story is God's story but it is also our story and it is just as relevant today for us it was for the Israelites. Join us each Sunday at 10:25 A.M. as we continue to study the Greatest Story Ever Told. Copies of the book are still available and it is never too late to join this study. Bus Trip/Art Adventure Art of the Reformation Minneapolis Institute of Art Jan 13-14, 2017 Faith Lutheran Church/Cluster Faith Lutheran is sponsoring a coach bus trip for members and cluster friends to the wildly popular Here I Stand Reformation exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. You ll see paintings, sculpture, gold, textiles, and works on paper as well as Luther s personal possessions and recent archaeological finds. More information can be found at new.artsmia.org/exhibitions. Time will be allowed to enjoy other exhibits within the museum. 8 Faith Lutheran Church Minutes November 21, 2016 Council minutes edited and abbreviated for length. A full version copy can be found on the bulletin board outside the church office. Stewardship The general fund income was $ , net income was -$ and YTD shortfall is -$22, October was the first full month that monthly giving is funding 2/3 of the associate pastor compensation, and it has become necessary to draw funds out of the operational reserve account to pay monthly bills. It appears that the operational fund reserve will be nearly depleted by year end, or shortly thereafter, unless general fund giving rises substantially. Lay Ministry A hymn sing will be held before Advent services. The pastors have proposed establishing a committee comprised of church members, a pastor(s), and a representative from Lay Ministry to plan an entire worship service (tentatively January 29 th, 2017). Motion carried. The Experiential Prayer event will be held on Saturday, February 18 th. Evangelism Work has been done to update the greeter list. Hands on Mission is drafting a job description for that committee s chairperson as they are still looking to fill that vacancy. Parish Fellowship No report Property The outdoor project by Signature Landscape is complete. A discount was given, but the bill was slightly higher than anticipated as volunteer labor was not used as planned. $2000 from the undesignated memorial fund to pay a portion of the landscaping bill was proposed and motion carried. The balance of the Signature Landscape expense will be paid from funds available in the property committee budget. Christian Education Confirmation students will be performing an outdoor live nativity on Sunday, Dec. 18 th and Wednesday, Dec.21 st. The gifts received on In as Much Sunday will be given to Hope House and the Domestic Violence Center/ Incourage. Talon Meyer will be leading a group of high school youth in bible study, discussion of current topics, etc. on Wednesday evenings from 7:15-8:15pm beginning Wednesday, January 4 th Youth Ministry 15 vehicles and about 100 treaters participated in Trunk or Treat, with a lock-in also held that night. Youth Ministry is looking to expand Trunk or Treat next year. Stacy Wilker has volunteered to take over responsibility for the soda machine. Upcoming events include skiing/tubing in January, Gamblers hockey game in February, and a game show night in February or March which will be a fundraiser for the 2018 National Youth Gathering in Houston. Jim requested that boards again provide baskets or items to be used for a silent auction (cost for baskets/items is not to come from the board budget, rather donations from the board members themselves). Jim is planning to start group meetings in January for NYG participants. A Faith Retreat is being planned for the weekend of March 25 th & 26 th, 2017 at Imago Dei and participation will be encouraged for all members of FLC, not just youth/families. The camp will provide leaders for the weekend, and money from the expanded ministries fund will be used to offset cost for FLC participants. Endowment No report as they did not meet. Youth & Family Pastor Nicole reported that Jim O Leary and Stephanie Leiteritz assisted Nicki with Kid s Night Out on Nov. 4 th and the kids enjoyed making wooden ornaments. The next KNO is Dec. 2 nd and the Board of Fellowship will assist kids in the making of tree skirts/tablecloths for homebound members. Over 150 dozen lefse was made with many youth and adults participating on Nov. 11 & 12 th. Confirmation youth will be leading the Nov.22 nd Thanksgiving service and all students are participating. Bell ringing for the Salvation Army at Christel s Piggly Wiggly will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3 rd. A second December Kid s Night Out will be held on the 16 th in conjunction with practice for the Christmas program. President s Report A letter from The Gathering Place in Oshkosh was received requesting financial support but no action was taken. On behalf of a local snowmobile club, David Haupt is requesting permission to locate a snowmobile trail on Faith s property alongside Hwy.151, with a crossing over the Roosevelt St. sidewalk. Concerns regarding snow removal in the sidewalk crossing area were discussed and Brian will let David know that we need to be assured that snow will be removed as needed from this sidewalk area. A motion was made and carried to allow the Viking Sno-Riders to run a trail system through FLC property for the 2016/2017 winter season. New Business A review of the stewardship campaign showed more pledge cards returned and a 17% increase in pledged dollars for 2017 as compared to 2016; however the pledge card response from the BoD and the various board members was only about 50%. Taking into account all anticipated income for 2017 including pledged, estimated non-pledged and holiday giving, total income is projected to be approximately $62,000 less than what will be required to pay anticipated expenses. The meeting adjourned at 9:58pm with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Kerry Schnell 8
