Roles/Membership Bits & Pieces Breaking News! FLC Minutes Birthdays Calendar Dear Friends and Family at Faith, As I write this article, I have the words of one of our VBS songs running through my head. The words go, If God is for me, who can be, who can be against me. This song I think is a wonderful reminder to us all that we have God always by our side and a God always advocating for us. The reality is when God is for us NO ONE absolutely NO ONE can be against us and that is GOOD NEWS! This whole week at Maker Fun Factory VBS the youth and adults are learning about how God has built us for a purpose and that God is always present in our lives and will always be there. God has created us each to do great things and as the kids journey through various stations, they learn about our Bible point for the day in different ways. The stations include Maker Games, Imagination Station, KidVid Cinema, Service Project, and Bible Exploration. The themes each day are God made you, God is for you, God is always with you, God will always love you, and God made you for a reason. These are great themes for all of us to remember. Take a look at some of the great ministry that is taking place in our midst through Maker Fun Factory VBS, because a picture is worth far more words than I could ever say when it comes to how great God is in our lives! Blessings, Pastor Nicole Welke

6 Bits & Pieces We d like to thank everyone that helped support our mission trip brat fry. We raised quite a bit of money to put toward the expenses and we are thankful for everyone the helped with that! Thanks to those who donated baked goods and other supplies, those who helped work, those who came and ate and a big thanks to the Piggly Wiggly for being so generous and helpful. We appreciate all of you, so thanks again so much! The Hands on Mission group and the mission trip attendees. REMINDER There have been times in the past when members of the congregation have done various tasks during the church service, such as sound operator, video recorder, communion server, usher and projection operator and for whatever reason did not show up. This makes it very difficult in the spur of the moment to have someone fill this position. We understand things can happen, but if you re unable to make it, your first attempt should be to find a replacement. If you are unable to find a replacement, contact Christine at the Pastor Sheri Lodel, daughter of Richard and Joyce, members of Faith, will celebrate her 20th year of ordination on Sunday, July 30. Sheri was ordained at Faith Lutheran on June 22, 1997 and serves Calvary Lutheran and Our Saviour s Lutheran in Grand Island, NE. The congregations will be celebrating Sheri and her ministry at worship and with a catered meal at 10:30 A.M. She has invited all from Faith to join in her day. More information can be found on the bulletin board across from the church office. church office. Let's all try to help run things smoothly. Thank you. Sue Riesterer Board of Lay Ministry ECSW RESOURCE CENTER At the 2017 Synod Assembly, Bishop Mansholt announced the closing of the ECSW Resource Center and he held a Closing of the Resource Center. The center is no longer open for people to borrow resources or to come in and use them as plans for Fall begin. If you have any overdue resources, please return them as soon as possible. We will be 'reforming' this space to continue to meet your needs in new ways. Watch for more information regarding the release of the resources and for exciting new ideas about the new 'EPIC Hub'. 6

7 BREAKING NEWS! FAITH MORTGAGE-RETIREMENT MATCHING FUND Faith has received a generous $50,000 Matching Fund from a family bequest! This wonderful donation supports the ongoing ministry of the congregation through the pay-off of our mortgage. Every dollar up to $50,000 will be fully matched, and used to reduce our building debt. Every dollar you give to the fund counts, as we will only receive matching funds for the dollars raised. Watch your mail for more information. The challenge will run July 1 through December 31,

8 Faith Lutheran Church Minutes May 15, 2017 Council minutes edited and abbreviated for length. A full version copy can be found on the bulletin board outside the church office. Stewardship The general fund income was $29, GF net income was $ and YTD net income is -$ It was noted that approximately $2000 of the income this month was from the Lenten quarter cards. Nicolle Behnke has requested financial assistance for the mission trip transportation as this was also provided to the group last year. Motion made and carried to allocate up to $1000 from the Capital Benevolence fund to be used for the July mission trip vehicle rental. Stewardship would like to allocate money again this year to the Lakeshore Camp program which sends disadvantaged kids from the area to Crossways Camps for a week. Motion made and carried to donate $1000 from the Capital Benevolence to Lakeshore Camp. They would also like to acknowledge the support for our youth/confirmation program that is provided by the monks from Holy Resurrection Monastery in St. Nazianz. Pastor Erica explained that they have significant financial need and it would be a nice gesture to help them out. Motion made and carried to donate $1000 from Capital Benevolence to Holy Resurrection Monastery in recognition of their support of our youth. Discussion was had regarding the fact that Faith is having financial problems yet we are giving money to outside organizations and some members will be upset about these donations. A reminder was given that the Capital Benevolence monies are a result of the Capital Appeal which was voted on and approved by the membership. This benevolent money cannot be used for the general operation of the church. The current Capital Benevolence balance is $ so there will still be over $6000 in the account after paying out the amounts approved above, with money being added each month based on the Capital Appeal giving. Stephanie distributed a copy of the Time & Talent sheet developed by Stewardship. Lay Ministry Special prayers, a patriotic hymn, and a special fellowship hour will be part of the Sunday service Memorial Day weekend. Having an outdoor worship service the Sunday of the Valders picnic in August will depend on the availability of the Praise Band. Lay Ministry has chosen the gathering and recessional hymns for worship through August. At least one more member is being sought for the Lay Ministry board. Evangelism Flat Martin Luther starts on May 21 st and will be around until Reformation Sunday. Pizza boxes will be distributed with activities such as coloring, journaling, etc. as part of Flat Martin Luther. Parish Fellowship Approximately 24 individuals attended the senior appreciation meal and it was very enjoyable. Arlene Roehrig was commended for the table set up/decorations. Property Bids are slowly coming in for the light fixture/led bulbs project. Four bulbs will be installed in Fellowship Hall for people to evaluate which are best. Quasius is going to be providing an estimate to upgrade the lower level restrooms. The heating pipes in the educational wing ceilings will be insulated this summer which will require the installation of new ceilings and light fixtures in the classrooms. Sharing the cost of a lawnmower with the Cemetery Committee was not budgeted thus Lyle stated doing so would put Property over budget. Christian Education There has been conversation regarding what the appropriate age is to be confirmed. It used to be 10 th grade and based on parental input was changed to 8 th grade. This may need to be revisited with parents as there is some feeling that many 8 th graders are not ready to be confirmed. Discussion was had regarding how to increase parental involvement throughout the confirmation process. Youth Ministry Jim Schuessler will be stepping down as Director of Youth Ministry. A possible replacement will be discussed at the next Youth Ministry board meeting on May 16 th. Endowment Is doing a closer review of how they distribute gift cards, thus cards will no longer be available for the staff to give out if a request is made. Pastor Erica The Synod Assembly is May 19 th -20 th and she will be attending along with Pastor Nicole and Bryce & Penny Larson as congregation representatives. Installation of board members will be held on Wednesday, June 14 th and Sunday, June 18 th. Pastor Nicole This summer she will be attending part of confirmation camp the week of July 9 th as well as going on the mission trip July 19 th -23 rd. Youth & Family The BYG weekend was a great faith building weekend for the kids and Nicki, along with chaperones Peter Larson and Lisa Mulhaney. The Kid s Night Out in May involved making Mother s Day gifts, playing games, and watching a movie, and included 4 youth from the community who are not members. Nicki is planning an intergenerational trip to the Wade House on Saturday, June 17 th. It is Dairy Days and there will be lots of fun events. President s Report Information was received from a member about the Martin Luther Reformation movie that is available for congregations to sponsor a showing at church for $300, or it can also be shown at the movie theater with attendees paying the cost there. A motion was made and carried to allocate $500 from the Expanded Ministries account to fund the Martin Luther Reformation event, including the movie and refreshments. Evangelism and Parish Fellowship will determine a date and work together for this event. Old Business Penny Larson reported that grants from Thrivent will be applied for to cover some of the food and recreation rental cost for the Family Fun Fest on June 23 rd. Last year approximately 125 people attended and the cost was about $900.A motion was made and carried to allocate up to $400 from the Expanded Ministry fund to help with costs not covered by the Thrivent grants. New Business Comments received on the Vision Team presentations have been mixed, with the major complaint being the focus on money for too many weeks in a row and that it replaced the sermon vs. being more of a temple talk. Overall, however, the messages have been very positive and well presented. 8
