It s not something we do to please God, but to stay connect to God. It is two way: we speak to God, and we also listen for that still small voice within. It is important not to make prayer into a chore, or a work, but a part of our love for God, like communicating with a beloved parent or mentor. It can be as quiet and simple as just being aware that God is there and God cares: practicing God s presence. Many years ago I heard a teaching on prayer by Pastor Rick Foss. What stuck with me was that we have all learned how to talk with and to others. We know how to share our needs, express gratitude, say we are sorry and ask forgiveness, how to say what is important to us, speak words of love, and we learn how to listen to one another. Prayer is simply doing what we already know how to do, but with God. One of the key ways Jesus showed his love for his Father was by regularly engaging in prayer. Throughout the Gospels we read how Jesus went up to a mountain to pray or knelt down and prayed or continued all night in prayer. As Jesus prayed, he gained a clearer sense of who he was (his identity) and what he was to do (his mission). Before he taught or healed, before choosing the Twelve or submitting his will to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed. Whatever the opportunity or challenge, Jesus turned to his Father first and sought the guidance of God. As Jesus disciples we need to follow in his example. Especially as we journey through Faith is in the call process. There are still questions to be answered. We need to seek God s guidance and divine help. Remember the Call Committee and Church Council in your prayers. Pray that God would help them have a clearer direction in this call process. I will be with you and help with this process as long as it takes. I too want you to be praying for me as I am praying for you as a congregation. Our future is in God s hands. Serving Christ better together, Pastor Jim

7 From Our Neighbors Save the Date: Help for the Homeless Hygiene Drive February 17 March 10, 2019 Last spring 99 Manitowoc area employers, churches and schools placed collection boxes to donate hygiene supplies to local shelters for 91.5FM The Family Radio s annual Help for the Homeless hygiene drive. Their donations totaled $24,000 worth of supplies for local Manitowoc crisis programs! The communities "get" this! Most of us CAN afford to buy an extra bottle of shampoo or package of toilet tissue. In 2018, $411,000 worth of supplies were donated in Northeast and Central Wisconsin, stocking the shelves of 83 local crisis agencies. This donation allows our crisis agencies to concentrate their limited resources on providing qualified staff, safe housing, nutritious food, education, and counseling to those they serve. What: 95.5 The Family s 27th annual Help for the Homeless hygiene drive to collect personal care and cleaning products for local crisis agencies. In the Manitowoc area we ll be collecting for: Hope House of Manitowoc County The Haven of Manitowoc County InCourage Domestic Violence Shelter for Manitowoc County Lakeshore CAP Lutheran Social Services/RAYS (Runaway & Youth Services) Men s and Women s TeeBox Transitional Living Home The Salvation Army Manitowoc County When: February 17 March 10, 2019 Why: Where: Hygiene and cleaning items are expensive and are not covered by Wisconsin Food Share (formerly Food Stamps). This donation helps BOTH the crisis programs and those they serve. Faith Lutheran church will have a box in the Gathering Space for you to place your donated items. Questions about the hygiene drive? Contact Heidi Prahl, The Family Radio Network s Help for the Homeless hygiene drive event coordinator at or heidip@thefamily.net Cash donations: YES, we DO accept financial donations! Make checks out to The Family with Help for the Homeless on the memo line. Mail them to The Family radio, Attn. Heidi Prahl, 1909 W 2nd St, Appleton WI They ll buy $10 gift cards (Shopko) for the agencies to buy hygiene supplies. Funds stay in the community where the check comes from. 8 Faith Lutheran Church Minutes December 17, 2018 Stewardship: Net loss for 2018 as of November 30, 2018 is $15, Checking account balance includes the $9,963 loan transferred from the Capital Appeal Benevolence fund earlier this year to provide a reserve for paying bills. In order to start our new fiscal year with an accurate checking account balance, the Board of Stewardship would like to return this loan to the Capital Appeal Benevolence fund, which will become a line item under the Memorial Fund now that the Capital Appeal has concluded. Motion made and carried to repay the Capital Appeal Benevolence Fund loan out of the General Fund providing there is adequate cash flow prior to the 2019 annual meeting. The budget includes envelope offerings of $278,447, of which $219,000 is total pledges received for 2019 to date and $60,000 is an estimate, historically based, of unpledged offering projected for Line-item changes made to the budget include: Capital Loan (mortgage) is included in the Board of Church Property budget (previously Capital Appeal.) The Council decided to combine the Luther League, Kids Night Out, and Youth Activities into one line-item entitled Youth Activities and transfer all three suggested budget amounts under Youth Activities. The line-item entitled Church Treasurer Salary under Personnel Committee Staff Expense was changed to Church Bookkeeper Salary. Lay Ministry: Joyce Sorenson, joined by entire Council, thanked all involved in preparing the Sunday School Christmas Program, indicating the program was wonderful and greatly appreciated by all who attended. A Healing Service will be held in January All members of the Board of Lay Ministry agreed to renew their terms for another year. Bell Choir bells need maintenance, which was noticed now that they are being used again. Clarification was requested on the association of the Altar Guild and the Board of Lay Ministry. It was determined that since the Altar Guild falls under the Board of Lay Ministry, a representative from the Altar Guild should attend all Board of Lay Ministry meetings. Board of Evangelism: There was not a representative at the meeting, however it was noted the Board of Evangelism will be working on the Mardigras event to be held the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Hands on Mission: Penny Larson reported a total of $522 was received from the sale of greeting cards for California Disaster relief, which was sent directly to Lutheran Disaster Response. Board of Parish Fellowship Will be having a welcome for Pastor Jim on January 20 th along with Annual Meeting. Board of Church Properties: Lyle reported Faith s Multi-Peril and Umbrella Liability insurance policy through Church Mutual will have an annual premium increase of $432 due to new requirements under the Federal Terrorism Risk Insurance Act for coverage beginning February 1, Since a portion of this additional premium ($182) is optional, Lyle brought it to the Council for approval. It was the consensus of the Council to accept the terrorism coverage at an additional cost of $182/year, since the annual cost was well worth the added security. The policy runs from February 1 st through January 31 st each year and has been paid in 2 installments in recent years. A fire department inspection resulted in the need to replace many of the fire extinguishers due to expiration. Mannenbach will be completing regular maintenance on the heating system, which may take an entire day. Board of Education: Brenda indicated the Confirmation program needs revision and then kept consistent from year to year. More members are needed on the Board of Education, since currently there are only 4 members and they have taken on additional duties with the termination of the Coordinator of Youth & Family Ministry position. Pastor s Report: Pastor Jim shared his written report including planned vacation times and he has arranged pulpit supply for all the Sundays he will be gone on vacation. He is doing the December communion/visitation for members on the home/shut-in communion list. Attended several Board meetings including Personnel, Lay Ministry, Youth & Family, Christian Education, Stewardship, along with Council, which has provided a better understanding of Faith s leadership process. President s Report: Bryce reported on plans for Crossway s Camp Capital Appeal, which will occur over 6 Sundays, beginning in January and ending the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. We need 2-3 more committee members to help with the campaign, give temple talks, prepare letters to congregation, put on hymnal covers, etc. Would like a family and a youth who have attended camp. Thrivent Action Team will provide funds to cover postage for congregational mailings. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m. 8
