1 NORTH WASECA LUTHERAN CHURCH The Vine Newsletter Volume 2018, Issue 10 October 2018 Special Edition Lutherans and non-lutherans alike credit Martin Luther for spearheading the Reformation by raising important questions about the church and translating the Bible for everyday people. *Taken from The Lutheran Handbook, Church Stuff. Five things you should know about the Lutheran Reformation: Most people in medieval times had low expectations. They didn t know anything about medicine, psychology, or a democracy. They didn t expect to live very long. They didn t think they had much power over their lives. They didn t think that being an individual was important. The Lutheran reformers were Catholic. The reformers wanted to make changes within the one Christian Church in Europe, but they wanted to stay Catholic. None of them ever expected that their actions would lead to the dozes of Christian denominations around today. People in medieval times weren t allowed to choose their own religion. You could believe whatever you wanted, but you could only practice the faith your prince or king chose. After the Reformation, only the regions whose princes had signed the Augsburg Confession could practice any faith other than Catholicism. Martin Luther wasn t the only reformer. Luther wanted the church to rediscover the good news of Jesus that creates and restores faith. Other reformers fought for these changes: separation of church and state, a relationship with God, better-educated priests, and more moral leaders in the church. Luther and his colleagues cared about what you hear in church today. They taught pastors how to tell the difference between law and gospel, so that the Word of God would hit home. The Law says, do this, and it s never done. Grace says, believe in this, and everything is already done. Martin Luther. It was very important to Luther that Christians understand the difference between God s law and the free gift of God s grace. 4 160 Years One hundred and sixty years, that s quite a legacy. The little white church on the hill has withstood the great depression, sending members off to several wars, and many changes to it s edifice. There s been countless baptisms, weddings, funerals, Christmas programs, ice cream socials, and lutefisk suppers. Through it s ministers (congregation and pastors) the little white church on the hill has ministered to many within its walls, in the communities it serves, and through missions abroad. Those founding families, so many years ago, understood that in order to build a church you must have a good foundation. When laying that foundation down, you must begin with a solid cornerstone. They began building a church with the most important cornerstone of all... faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2: {19-22 That s plain enough, isn t it? You re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He s using us all irrespective of how we got here in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home. The Message Bible} Ephesians tells us how with Christ as our cornerstone we can build the physical building. The church. We can also build our relationship with God. As that relationship grows, we become a brick in the church that God is building each day. There s a Bible camp song that says this: We are the church, the body of our Lord. We are all God s children we have been restored. Through Jesus Christ we have been restored. We are the church. Just as our ancestors used Jesus as the cornerstone when building our church building. We can use Him as our cornerstone while building our faith. Through life s storms and troubles that foundation will hold strong with Jesus as our cornerstone. As we continue to build our house s foundation (faith), God supplies the mortar and abides with us throughout our life.

They are loyal and provide companionship & many good memories. This event is a way to give thanks for the blessings that our pets bring to our lives. Bring your pet to church & receive a blessing & small gift for your pet! If you want to participate, but your pet doesn t play well with others, simply keep your pet in your car and I will come over & do the blessing car side. If you have lost a pet this year and want to remember and give thanks for them, simply bring a picture of them and we will give thanks for their life. Please feel free to invite a neighbor or friend to bring their pets and join us for this special event.
