FRIENDS OF THE POOR WALK On Saturday, September 28th, my daughter, Lisa, and I will once again participate in the annual St. Vincent DePaul Friends of the Poor Walk. 100% of the money we raise stays with our parish SVdP conference and will be used to assist those in need in our community. Parents of students in Grades K-8 may visit their child s classroom at 7 PM and meet the teachers. There will be a general Home School Association meeting in the cafeteria at 8 PM. An eighth grade parents meeting to go over activities for the year will follow in Room 8A. Students will attend the 8:45 AM Mass on Friday, September 13, to celebrate the beginning of our school year. If you haven t already done so, please return the signature page from the back of the handbook/calendar as well as the Emergency Contact Form. 3 Family Day A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children Family Day Monday, September 23, 2013 Parents: What your kids really want at the dinner table is YOU! Families are encouraged to celebrate Family Day by eating dinner together on Monday, September 23 rd and everyday. More importantly, talk with your children. During dinner, turn off the TV and let the answering machine record your calls. Involve the entire family in planning and cooking the meal if possible. Start a family tradition of beginning family meals with a prayer or by lighting candles. Remember to have dessert or consider playing a board game after dinner to keep the conversations going. Family Day embodies the values and teachings of the Church. Starting a Sunday ritual of attending Mass and sharing a meal as a family is a meaningful tradition that will increase parental engagement and communication with your children. Secrets to Successful Family Dinners Start the pattern of family dinners when the children are young. Use Sunday as the day to pick several nights during the upcoming week when the entire family can eat together. Make your best attempt to stick to the schedule. Encourage your children to create menu ideas and participate in meal preparation. Turn off the TV and let your answering machine take care of your incoming calls. Talk about what happened in everyone s day: school, work, extracurricular activities, or current events. Establish a routine to start and end each meal. Say grace, light candles or tell a story. Eat dessert or play a board game after dinner to continue the conversation. Keep conversations positive and make sure everyone gets a chance to speak. The youth group is hosting its "Welcome back" Picnic this Sunday, September 8th, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on the field behind Trailer D at St. John's (the current youth ministry office for St. Cecelia and St. John's). 4 On behalf of the needy school children of the area, a heartfelt thank you to all who participated in the St. Vincent De Paul Backpack drive. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the SJV community, we collected 74 backpacks, 58 bags of school supplies and $90 in gift cards! May God Bless you for your kindness to those less fortunate. PRO LIFE Our Maternity Collection is now EVERY WEEKEND. Our donation Box and Crib can be found in the front foyer all the time. 5 St. John Vianney Social Justice Ministry News The Church s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. One of the building blocks of Catholic Social Teaching as identified by the Catholic Bishops is Care for God s Creation. We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.
