3 A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Just as the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to him who sows and bread to him who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. Mark well then the parable of the sower. The entire passage of Isaiah is included for our reflection, preparing us for the parable of the sower and the explanation of its meaning. Living in a world, and encouraged by Pope Francis, the question of ecology becomes so apparent. Consider the issue of global warming, climate change with cold and snow in the south, heavy winter storms in the midwest and northeast, and a prevailing drought in western states, the world which surrounds is in a state of flux. Isaiah uses the same images to describe the effect of the word of God on all of us. As I heard the first part of Matthew s gospel, I might have recalled by memory the different places where the seed fell, and what happened to it. But did I mark well? Today the Word is being sown again in my life. Am I prepared to accept it, have I cleared the ground, removed the obstacles, and asked the Lord to speak to my heart? As I listen, the Word should become a challenge for me, directing and correcting, forming and reforming my life, so that it does not return to Him void, but becomes fruitful. I ask that today because of my hunger and thirst for the Word, that I may be firmly rooted in love. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Reminder! We still have room at the Deacons' Table every Wednesday 5pm to 7pm for a Pasta Dinner. We are located at the Holy Spirit Worship Site of the Good Shepherd Parish conveniently located at the corner of Hazel and Brace Avenues in Perth Amboy. Come and join us and bring your family and friends. YOUTH MINISTRY The youth group would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support of the very successful Appalachia project. Our teens, adults, and contractors worked tirelessly to assist two families this year. Through organization and hard work, we achieved our goals ahead of schedule. One, our first site, we sealed a trailer roof with three coats of aluminum tar paint to stop leaks, we replaced a sagging bathroom floor, built an emergency fire exit with stairs so the family could apply for insurance, and repaired the underpinning to prevent the freezing of pipes in the winter. On the second site, we demolished a front porch, dug foundation holes and poured 26 bags of concrete on the first day! We then built the sub structure on the second day and installed the planks, railings, steps, and lattice on the third day. A truly incredible feat in record time. Now both sites are much safer and ready to handle the long punishing winter months ahead. Our teens also cooked, cleaned, and facilitated prayer services every night at camp which proved to be very deeply spiritual experiences. Thank you for your prayers and support!! You can be very proud of just how well our teens represented our parishes!! YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY It's here!! The rugged maniac mud run is this weekend!! Please pray for this fun bonding experience to continue to vitalize our ministry and lead to future young adults in our parishes!
